Your pool pump impeller is what creates the flow from your pool to your filter and returns out . This post will show you how to clean your swimming pool pump impeller. Your swimming pool pump impeller is what creates the flow from your pool to your filter and returns out . When the impeller is clogged it reduces the flow. A clear indication of reduced flow from a clogged impeller is… your pump pot might not have full prime. This means your pump basket will not be full with water.
Another indication that you might have a clogged impeller is your pool pump gauge might be reduced. So if it normally set at 30 and it's running at 20, this could be an indication of a clogged impeller or your vacuum might not be working as efficiently or as as normal.

In this video we’re going to show you how to clean your impeller.

With the basket removed/out and with the motor turned off you can put a screwdriver or NPS Pool & Spa Supply www.npspool.com... sells an impeller and clogger. It's a tool specifically designed just to unclog and clean the impeller.
Using the device, insert into the basket and pump area and scrape for vegetation, debris, and other things that might be blocking your impeller. Lots of debris can be in the impeller especially during the spring with blowing winds and vegetation.
You can watch the video here on youtube:

After you have checked your impeller and removed your debris place your basket back in. You fill up with water to prime, and you put your lid back on making sure the O-ring has not fallen off or is missing.
Next, turn the motor on to ensure priming.
So how often should you check your impeller? Check it on a weekly basis when you check your pump basket for debris. Take a few extra moments to check and clean the impeller. It will help with the flow and to keep your pool crystal clear, ready-to-swim!

I love his no-nonsense and to the point video! Frustrated viewers don’t need wordy solutions! This was well done! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
This guy is amazing. After watching this video I called him and I asked him a question and he was very polite and professional. I told him that I am in NY and it doesn't stopped him to answer my question and help me out. He told me that he is in Arizona.
Roger, THANK YOU for assisting! Not just with impeller cleaning but your vast technical experience in the industry. It is helpful to have skilled technicians such as yourself out there to assist others who are learning new skills each and everyday. Over the years I have found that if I do not learn something new, almost everyday, I am most likely not doing something right. Keep up the effort, summers here, look forward to more videos come fall time!
Thank you! You saved me a service call to the pool company. So easy. I have been looking after my pool since 2001 and did not know about this. I will make it part of my checks from now on.
We tell people to check the impeller at least every 2-3 weeks. Thank you for the comment !!
Roger thanks so much. I've had a pool for over 40 years and didn't know this.
We are glad you found this helpful. Thank you for the comment
Thank you. I found what was a plastic bag in the impeller, along with other miscellaneous stuff. I used a wire hanger with a small hook at the end. Perfect!
I was away for a few weeks and when I came back my pump pot was full of debris and I cleaned it out and the pump would not prime. I checked several things like the intakes and pool floor drain to see if something was clogged. I was starting to think the pump had overheated and was damaged, and I was going to have to spend hundreds of $ on a new pump. I came across this video and tried it. Bang, that was the issue. The intake had a bunch of debris in it and after cleaning it out with a small screw driver, the pump took off and primed immediately. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE VIDEO! It really saved me to hassle and expense.
Good demonstration with the side view showing the screwdriver going inside the impeller.
Perfect video to help explain a simple fix to what would otherwise seem like a perplexing issue of a pump that won't prime and a system that won't reach full pressure. Thanks!
Thank you big-time I feel like this is the problem I'm having with my pool I'm new to this pool stuff but I'm getting the hang of it thanks to guys like you helping me and I appreciate you taking the time to make this video👊🏾
I'm a first-time pool owner, this is my first season. Had no idea the impeller even existed, and thus haven't cleaned it. It was super clogged. This solved my low pressure problem. Huge help, thanks man.
So glad this video helped you !!
welcome to pool ownership. So glad this helped you !!
Me too. This video was super helpful. I tried vacuuming last night and no suction. The basket on side of pool was clean. I finally gave up. I went out this am to shut pump off. Been running 12 on 12 off. And no water was flushing around like it was suppose to. Nothing. I looked inside and it has alot in it. Pools been up a week yesterday. The clear see thru lid I couldn't get off. Will have my husband try. Hoping it's just to tight. Thank you so much for this video. I'm now a subscriber.
I had low pressure, 8 psi when it is usually 12-15, and I knew it wasn't a suction line clog because it was low pressure when in both spa and pool modes. I checked the impeller but not as this gentleman instructed, so I didn't find the clog. I cleared the impeller of leaves and now it is working perfectly again. Thank you True Method and the RUclips community for helping me fix everything in my house and on my vehicles and saving me thousands of dollars.
Saving pool owners money is what we strive for....glad we were able to help !
Thank you Roger! Pump is working perfectly now after unclogging the impeller. I will make this a weekly maintenance check from now on. Keep up the good work!!
Thank you for the encouragement and I am so pleased this helped. I will try to continue to add more helpful videos.
OMG! Thank you. I have spent the last 3 weeks trying to work out why the pool hasn't got a strong filter. Checked absolutely everything (except the impeller😩). I learnt something today and am forever thankful. Cheers to you.
We are glad its tips like this that are helpful. We will continue to try to make videos to help
Thanks for your vidio. Followed your directions and it fixed my low presure prblem. Good Job
thank you for this and especially for taking the time to show how it looks being cut in half...was very informative!!
My psi was literary zero and after doing this.... omg stoked!!! worked like a charm! thank you from the bottom of my heart.
YOU ARE AWESOME! You literally just saved me $200. THANK YOU!!!!
Thanks for making me not swear extremely loudly on a Sunday morning 😁👍👍
that made us laugh...thank you
Thank you for this video, I was at a loss! Had low pressure at the return eye and when backwashing. Impeller was packed with tree leaf casings that must have been sucked past the skimmer and pump baskets. I used a flexible drain cleaner and my finger to dislodge the debris.
Saved me a ton of time. I used to pull the motor side off my old pump and clean it that way. I just tried it this way and was done in 5 minutes.
The right way takes less than a minute
Pro tips do help ! Thank you for taking the time to comment.
Maaaan you just solved MY issue . My pump was making a super off/odd LOUDER noise when I turned it on tonight. So I KNEW man somethings up. Did the screwdriver. LOTS N LOTS of GRASS came right out . Flipped on the switch sounded normal. N all is well now. THANK YOU!!
Awesome Instructions - and it worked!!!!!!!!
Awesome !
Thanks Roger! Followed your instructions to remove debris from my pump impeller, and it worked perfectly. Thanks for sharing.
Yes!! I also had a louder than normal sound out of the pump. This was the problem. Thank you!!
THANK YOU! After spending an hour trying to figure out what was causing my low pressure issue, I watched your video, went back to the pump, and sure enough, there was a bunch of grass and leaves in the impeller. Pressure went right back to where it should be. HURRAH!

This is the helpful DIY pool maintenance video I have seen. Thank you!
I have a Pentair Challenger system and I tried your method when I was investigating a low pressure issue. I couldn't detect any debris that way, but when I removed the clamp and the diffuser, the impeller was so crammed full of stuff that it was hard to understand how the pump was working at all. It was easy to clean out. My PSI tripled and my GPM doubled!! Unfortunately, I was never able to get the pump back together with a perfect seal. In an outdoor environment, you probably wouldn't even notice the leak. Nevertheless, if your pump is more than a few years old, I recommend buying the relevant o-rings or a go-kit before opening it. Just my experience.
Tengo el mismo problema con mi challenguer que no da los mismos gpm que debiera ya la limpie por dentro y no se que mas hacer
first of all i would like to thank you for this amazing video which is honestly very helpful to me. The following happened to me: after a flood, the pump was covered by water which cover almost tthe electrical panel. Do you have any video to recommend how to clean the pump? What exactly should I disassemble and what should I do? I would appreciate if you kindly answer for this question with your suggestions . My location is in Paros island in Greece and at this month (August) is inpossible to find any one for maintenance
this helped me immensely! thank you for this video! i thought i needed a new pump or something, nope just clogged impeller.
Thank you sooo much...saved me big money as I was told I needed a new motor!!
that is awesome and great to hear !!
I just tried it and it worked GREAT!.. Thanks a lot for taking the time to make this video 👍
Thank you and I am happy this worked for you and thank you for the comment.
hey, thanks! it was really helpful seeing the cross-section!
Thanks.....................works 100%...........saved me hours as I was going to remove the impeller. 100%
Excellent video. Thanks Roger.
Thank you! You saved me from buying a new pump!
I listened to the entire message. Thank you for the information. I will start by asking my pool man what is wrong. I will get a pad to start with.
Mine isnt priming even when I fill it up. And it sounds louder. Maybe it has bad ball bearings?
Try taking the top off the pump .
Put 5 way valve on recirculation and open the return valve [ make sure electric is off ]
The water flows backwards and normally clears the impeller
Really hoping this is what is wrong with mine.
I noticed today the gauge is at zero and not moving when it normally sits around 10.
Thank you for posting this!
Thank you so much for this! Truly saved me some money. You are awesome!
So glad we saved you money with this tip. Thank you for the comment !!
Thank you for this video. It was very helpful.
Thank you so much. My neighbors were getting tired of me yelling at the impeller.
We're happy we could bring peace and quiet back to the neighborhood lol🤣
Life saver, thanks for this. Sooo helpful.
We are glad this was soooo helpful to you !!
Top tip, be sure your pump is bonded to ground before trying this. Something was energizing my pump through the ground wire I guess? I imagine if they properly bonded it, the breaker would have tripped. Anyway, I got a little surprise when I tried to clean my impeller the other day. Not much current, but enough that I knew it was there.
GREAT video. Very very informative. 0:51 was the ultimate epic classic. I was laughing o hard. CLOGGED PELLER!
My pump was making a noise like if there was a rock stuck inside, rattling, and the pressure had dropped. I cleaned the impeller just like you advised and POW, my pump is back in service, Pressure is up, and noise is gone... Thanks...
Salvador Cortez same exact here. shes purring like a kitten and the creepy crawler is back in business
An alternate method, after removing the pump basket ... release the air bleed on the filter and all the water inside above the pump line flushes backward through the impeller forcing the clog free.
You know what you are doing, should have made this video for him.
@@poolmonkey7479 Not a bad tip, but it most of the time it doesn't generate enough back pressure to release debris.
Even trying to dig debris out from the pot doesn't always get it.
Thats why I like Challenger and Sta-Rire pumps, they have that band clamp that allows for easy access to impeller.
Totally fixed my problem! Thanks!!
Thanks so much - this was a big help!
So glad it was a help to you! Thank you for the comment! We hope to get more videos out soon
Needle nose pliers work great!
Does it like a homeowner might…Good pool guys have a better way.
Can’t you just twist off the pot? I have a pentair dynamo, that pot turns 45° to remove. I have big hands, I’ll try the screw driver trick, otherwise I may need to remove it entirely to get to the impeller.
I have a hard time doing it that way. I do it the long way: I detach the motor so I can look at it.
My impeller spins freely so got new capacitor when old one turned out to be bad but still hums. if impeller spins by hand could it still be the problem. Asking before taking things apart
Thank you so much for this video!!! This was so helpful.
Thank you you saved me 160$
Thank You so much!!!! This worked like a charm.
Thanks for the video.
I have a capacitor that I believe needs replacing. I'm having a hard time finding one with the same specs. 250-300 if 110VAC +65 C.
Any idea where I can get my paws on one or are there any other that are compatible? Thanks again.
If you go straight in from the front of the impeller how do you clean each slot?
I checked all of the stuff you mentioned, the pressure is not strong as it use to suck my hand in the skimmer. There are bubbles coming out of the pool, I cleaned everything, I changed the pipes, no more leaks, no air, but nothing has worked, what else? My pool turned green, my gauge is at 6 it used to run on 10, and every time I plug the vacuum hose it drops to 0, help, what else can I do?
thank you so much i have been racking my brain why this happend and this fixed my problem
best tip so far. thanks.
What if it's making a noise when it's running ?
Does a paper filter pool pump have an impeller?
awesome video
Thank YOU!! Problem solved in 3 mintues.
Make the tool out of a clothes hanger - easy and much cheaper... Should have told them that the reason why most of the time is a bad pump basket which needs to be replaced. True that some times stuff is smaller than the grids on the pump basket but not very often.
My pump run but it will not push water out or bring it back in no blockages.
My pump is leaking, there is no pressure, it use to be at 10 and then move to 20 when the filters needed to be cleaned. Now it is back to zero. I had a pool man come out, he said he would charge me 350 dollars to come and fix it
Thanks man. This worked!
when i fill water by jag water is out from pool
What happens if those don't work should I remove the pump and clean it?
Roger, Can a slightly, loose impeller ring (plastic) be annoyingly noisy, too? If, yes, what do you advice to correct this problem? Thank you.
THANK YOU!!!
That was great thanks
what does it mean when the display on pump motor says Alarm 'overcorrect'
There is a hum, but the pump does not actuate.
i have cleaned the filters and ensured the water levels are full
I press reset and then the display reads ' display not active' then flips back to 'alarm overcurrent' i have turned off system at mains to hopefully reset it, but the same problems appears
The motor has burnt out. Current is going through the outer wiring and causing a hum but is not inducing a current in the secondary wiring due to burnt out wires. The Chinese are stingy and use thin wires.
I cleaned out the impellar but now when I turn the pump on it makes a buzzing sound and stops after 30 seconds. Did I break the pool pump.
John T same here... I think the impeller is stuck and the motor is struggling to get it turning... there probably was an automatic cutoff that stopped the process to avoid overheating so your pump might not be dead... let it cool down and try again.
Good Job!
my pump basket seems stuck I can't Pull it out.. any suggestions
Turn it then pull it out
hey, when I'm opening the lid a lot of water is poured, why is that?
igal rabaev I believe it's because the water is returning back to the pool, once all the water returns you can then fill it up with the water hose helping the process when you close the lid and turn the pump back on. But don't quote me on that I'm not no poor scientist or nothing😂
Pool*****
Your non return valve is rat shit.
Teach me everything.
thanks you sir/ i was about to drop some coin on a new pump!
Wow Andy Myawani from Tacoma fd career went downhill lol
If you have small hands turn the power off and then stick your hand in there and pull the shit out 😂
I tried all the suggestions here. My impeller was clear... I ended up having to replace the pump which was dead (Hayward). I bought a new Hayward Power-flo Matrix pump and needed to rotate the body so the water output was positioned on the side. I made a quick little video if anyone else needs to know how to do the rotation. ruclips.net/video/RFbIvJwNAsM/видео.html
