when I was seven years old, I met Yuja Wang upstairs in the old Steinway Hall in NYC before my recital there. She was in the room down the hall practicing - and I was so mesmerized by what she was playing. She came out and I got to speak to her (not knowing anything about who she was) - and she was so kind and took the time to explain to me what she was practicing - and why - she made that joke about Carnegie Hall (she was practicing for a performance) - telling me to do the same. So this came up in my feed today- two days before my own debut at Carnegie (in the BMTG winners concert) - seven years after I met her. I took her "advice" and it worked.
Simply the greatest pianist alive. Her interpretation of "Gretchen am Spinnrade" is closer to Goethe's lyrics than any other pianist. At the moment she sits at the piano, there's all about the music, no showy behavior, ugly grimaces and strange behavior like many other pianists do. From Bach to Adams she plays every composer in exactly the right way....and .... she creates a "better world" for her audience, that's the real message of music!
