A real road bike? 2024 Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports review

  • Honda's given the Africa Twin a 19" front wheel, lower suspension and a new name - the Adventure Sports. This version's designed to be an on-road tourer with a 300-mile tank range, loads of torque and - in this particular case - a dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Join me for a full review on living with the bike, I'll share its wins and foibles, frustrations and erm, bum chat.

At 72 I’ve ridden for more than 50 years, down to three bikes and one is an Africa Twin DCT. I’ve grown from hating the DCT to lovin’ it and, while it’s a tad hefty, off and on tarmac it meets my needs. I want to buy the new Adventure Sports with the 19” front and lower height but I don’t want the youngster graphics and I do want adaptive cruse control and blind spot notification. Hey, I’m 72! So, I’ll wait until the ‘25 model but, at my age, my road’s running out of time!

It has been mentioned how expensive this bike is compared to its competitors. I did a comparison between the AT DCT with added engine/top bars, fog lights, centre stand, etc. to the 1300 GS and the existing 1250 GSA with similar equipment; both the Beemers came in at £3k more than the AT. Like a lot of cars today, the pricing of most bikes is advertised with basic equipment and you have to look deeper to fully understand how much the product really is to suit your needs. Thanks for the video.

I just got my 24 ATAS manual. Yes, 100hp is perfectly quick enough for the street here in Canada... Despite being a big girl, she is lighter and easier to push around than my CBF1000fa sport tourer...and easier to get on the centre stand. I am not sure why everyone is complaining about the weight... if you want a dual sport, buy a WR250. If you want to light up the tires and go autobahn speeds, get yourself a 'Busa. If you want a beautiful bike that is comfy, torquey, beautifully built and gorgeous... then give it a second look.

Good review. I bought a gently used '22 V-STROM 1050XT for $10K. 19", V-Twin, 106HP, panniers, top box, tank bag, etc. The engine is little bland, but the bike is low cost and crazy reliable. The accessory bar above the display is a game changer. Wonderful touring bike. I learned 100HP is not enough for short ride thrills, but it is plenty for touring. Short rides should be about the bike. Long rides should be about the ride.

Good video, but it should be mentioned that the engine is way more reliable than those 140 HP+ bikes and doesnt require high octane fuel. The performance is amazing... and for me personally, I like knowing it wont leave me stranded somewhere on a backroad during a 5000 mile trip!

i think the complicated switchgear is not really as big a problem as people think ..tbh we set the bike up initially to how we want it then never really visit the menu system again ..but yeah its bloody expensive when compared to the rest of the bikes in this class and tbh the midweights are comparable to it now ..and they should have updated the tft

This is the reason i went with the KTM1290 SAS in 2022.
The ATAS was the same price as the 1290 with the tech pack and dynamically the 1290 is in a completely different league.

Here in Canada, it is a relative bargain. The Ducatis, BMWs, Triumphs etc are all quite a bit more expensive. The other Japanese alternatives (ST1200, Versys 1000, VStrom 1050 etc) are all very comparable, but not nearly as good looking and not as advanced.

I think the AT, as nice as it is, is being left behind now.
£17k+ for 102bhp is up against the big boys and it's not really enough (perception is the key in bikes)
Apple CarPlay is not the USP it was in 2016 when I can buy a £200 wireless CarPlay (and Android auto) unit from Carpuride for my GS either
C'mon Honda - you've recognised that a change to a Tall-rounder is needed, now recognise that the bike needs a big ol' ergo update yeah (the switches and instruments,,,just to be clear)?

I'm moving to Thailand in a couple of months and had my heart set on buying a 2024 AT AS. However, after contacting Honda Thailand and 3 or 4 dealers, nobody has been able to confirm when, or even if, this bike will be available. Consequently, I've opted for the Tiger 900 Rally Pro, which is available. Doesn't have DCT, but does have a great quick shifter. Also comes standard with heated seats .... a feature which is essential for riding around SE Asia where the temps have recently topped 40 degrees C 🥵😂

The controls are pretty easy once you get used to them. Im considering getting another adventure bike but sadly the ATAS probably wont be in the mix although i would like to try that 19" front tyre. This is a good review despite what some other owners say.

Honda gone a different way than big GS, Tiger 1200.
They kept the relative low compression at 10.6:1, added more toque instead of chasing HP. Engine can run on low octane fuel and last many km's.
Michael Neeves MCN said in his test that he never felt it lacking power, 100hp is enough on public roads. Off course you don't get the rush you can get from +140hp but it's fun in its own way.
My old AT dct 2017 will maybe be replaced by one of the new AT 24

@@timrodierides Yes, I know what you mean. I have a 2024 ATAS but I've had the pleasure of ride much more powerful motorcycles (a GSA was one of them). And yes, everything is faster if we have 200 hp. But realistically, how often is this level of power really necessary? If the answer is "very often", then I can only assume that the type of driving someone is doing is not at all suitable for a public road. All the best.

Thing is, once you've ridden a bike with more power (even a GS) it's quite hard going back to an AT. I get why the off-road version doesn't need more than 100hp, but I think most road riders spending this amount would expect more.
