This past October, armed with a 35mm point-and-shoot, I was invited to witness a social youth community program called “Sport is your Gang. (SIYG)” SIYG teaches youth the sport of Muaythai, to inspire positive self-development and a healthy lifestyle. Located in the La Sierra barrio (Spanish for “neighborhood”) of Medellin, a community that has been stigmatized as a result of violence and drug trafficking, I witnessed the joy that this social project brought to the faces of these children. Having access to this program introduced me to the quality of life the people of this community have. This experience made me realize that I can share their story with the world through my photography.
