Right band wrong time. I think that’s probably the best description of Big Wreck’s musical journey.
Still a killer band, though it makes me proud to be Canadian
Finally someone covers Big Wreck. Thank you Sir.
Thanks for watching! I was utterly shocked to not find a tutorial on RUclips for this one. Such a classic and awesome riff.
Thank you for the tutorial. Thornley is criminally underrated. Big Wreck is Canada's best kept secret. Where have they been all my life? Since I heard the first 10 seconds of Locomotive I became an instant fan.
Big Wreck is the greatest rock band ever!
Some of us Americans appreciate Ian and Big Wreck. There's hope for us.
Great tutorial! I’m obsessed with Big Wreck…I’ll never forget hearing them in 97 with this track and being blown away! The new EP Pages still has them performing at their highest level…I’m in the US and keep turning people on to them. Soundgarden could bring Ian on to do some tribute shows in the vein of what Pantera is doing now..any way would love to see more Big Wreck guitar lessons.
I went deep into the Big Wreck discography and even had a chance to take some lessons from the rhythm guitar player Brian Doherty (RIP) and my level of playing went crazy. Now I play exclusively in the G flat 5 tuning but i drop the low string down a whole step and it opens up a huge amount of options. I play almost exclusively with this tuning, as well as DADGAD and whatever Soundgarden's "Burden in my hand" and "Pretty Noose" tuning is
OMG, Kelly. This is one of my all-time favourite songs, & You are a GREAT teacher, breaking down every delicate element.
THANK YOU so much for your kindness, patience & attention to minute details.
Still one of my favorite songs. Love these guys. I’m not Canadian but I’m still listening to them.
Ian Thornley is one of my favorite guitar players. This is great, love to see more Big Wreck!
Yeah man, it's a damned shame that they don't have more international success these days. Still pumping out awesome stuff.
Wow, so good! Hammer-ons, pull offs, palm mutes for days. Great job!
big wreck is still kicking! just saw them live last week
I can’t believe this only has 64 likes!!
I’ve loved this song, and Big Wreck since they came out. I’ve been trying to figure this out since 2001 when I started playing guitar! Thanks a million!!
This is a serious tutorial for free, you would be crazy not to learn this. Amazing band and amazing sounds, time will judge them as one of the greatest ever.
Subscribed in the Southeastern US! More tutorials of my favorite band, please. Many thanks!
I live in Virginia and have been a fan since the first album.
Freakin' awesome, man! Thanks a lot for this eye-opening tutorial and a glimpse into the magic and genius of alternate tunings! Really appreciate your teaching style!
Such a monster riff and song!
Agreed!
That was fun, thank you! Always thought Ian/Big Wreck was a band's band because only my musical buddies and I were talking about that album when it came out. But is definitely one of the best to hear, and look forward to FINALLY making an attempt to learn playing it. So thanks again 😎👌
I'm in the music industry and have been following these guys since they came onto the scene. RIP Brian!! Thornley is one of my favortie guitar/vocal heros and BW is one of my all time favorite bands. Great tutorial.
Wow... thank you! Not an easy tune to play but sounds great and that tuning is unreal! Thanks for sharing man!
bro.....keep the canadian stuff comin.....you rock it every time.....cheers from corner brook, nl
I have been showing my Dad bits and pieces of Ian’s stuff byway of music teachers like yourself and he really likes it as he was a guitarist. He hasn’t heard any albums yet. I can’t wait. PS he’s 82
Thank you!!! This Yank loves Big Wreck!!!
Wow!!! Great tutorial this will now go on my have to learn bucket list !!!
This just helped me so much holy god 🙏🏼🙏🏼The tabs I’ve found found are close but so far.
Best live band sound mix I've ever heard. Ian is a monster!
My brain hurts just looking at you play, but to create this.. that's genius level.
Very cool! Great tutorial. I always thought it was one of the coolest songs.
Just discovered Big Wreck 7.2. Excellent description of their varied sound and influences. I knew of Ian Thornley, just had never heard of his band. My favorite listening at the moment and spreading the word to everyone I can. Love your channel and really enjoyed this one!
Thanks Michael! Appreciate that a lot
Oh man. You have a monstrous rabbit hole to enter! He is prolific, and TALENTED. ENJOY!
perfectly played, and your analysis of their style is bang on!
I just got turned onto these guys. Doing my duty and spreading the word to other Americans.
yup!! that's a pretty great one!
Thank you for putting Ian Thornley and Big Wreck on my radar, this is a great riff indeed and although I haven't heard the original yet I'm pretty confident your cover was impeccable as always, haha!
Cheers Pedro! Good to hear from you. Hope you're well.
@@KellyDeanAllenGuitar Yes, doing well for the most part, lots of work and virtually no spare time though. 😞
Man that album is my top 5 no one has a clue who they are .
Fantastic job!! Definitely do some more BW. Criminially under appreciated band.
Do you hear the two little harmonica riffs at 1.01 and 1.06 Love that🎶 It's the only 2 times as far as I can tell. That makes me like it more! You did a awesome job on that my friend, Great song...
Really good vid, thanks!
Fantastic cover and tutorial of a great song. Thx
Awesome!
Fantastic, one of my favorite bands!
Likewise. 3 or 4 great albums in the past 10 years. Liked them when they hit the scene, like them even more nowadays.
@@KellyDeanAllenGuitar totally a band that deserves a much bigger audience. saw them here in San Francisco after ...but for the sun.
Absolutely great tutorial, didn't know i had to learn this til now. Awesome tune!
Awesome tutorial! Thanks!!!
Great tutorial!
Well done
Ian Thornley is a GOD in both voice and guitar. No only that, the fact that his prolific and complicated songwriting has been overlooked is a GLOBAL tragedy. I'd only like to add one thing, despite your comparisons to Chris Cornell, I really believe you're selling Ian short. His range is far greater and his live performances far more perfect than Chris'. Just my two cents. Amazing tutorial and breakdown. Thanks for this!
THANK YOU TONS
Amazing brother ❤
damn dude that's awesome !!!!!! Maybe you could do another demo of how to set up the Tremelo, Phaser, Delay, etc....
Their lack of respect in the states is a cot dayum shame…
Just a heads up tho, the first album after Big Wreck, “Thornley” did go gold in the states.
Gettin closer to 20k KDA,,,,, you rock bruh!
Damn close, haha. Few more months, no big jumps withstanding. It's a slow slog to 100k but that's the goal.
i agree
i thot Ian was first
a keyboard guy.
watch him n BW live.
oaf
that song
under the light house
come again
ghosts
i think they are too good
for a light pop audience
Sick!
There's some King's X influence as well!
Love this song! My cover band played it a few times back in the late 90's. Just posted a version of us playing THAT SONG :-)
Yes!!!!! 👏👏👏
Further to your soundgarden comparison - they also used lots of alternate "wacky" tunings
You've nailed this on all fronts! Would you be able to share more on your tone/effects for this tune? You've touched on it in this video but is there any more detail you can share. I have a Helix LT so as much info as you would be willing to provide would be awesome. Thanks.
More big wreck pls
Great band ghosts is an amazing song too
Can you share how you play the chunky, 16th-note rhythm part to the 2nd verse? I love the sound of that!
I always thought the riff to The Oaf was reminiscent of “Hole Hearted” by Extreme.
Hi Kelly where did you get the backing track ?
I can not figure out how to tune it to that
Why Big Wreck don’t come to Italy????
Whats the tuning
How the hell did you figure that out?
Ian is 100x better than Chris Cornell, as good as Chris is, Ian is a beast... Little bit of an insult to Ian and big wreck to compare them to Sound Garden.. IMO
