    Look at Mustafina's nods when Komova was on beam! She was holding her breath when Komova was preparing to dismount, and she immediately clapped and stood up after Komova finished her routine. As if she was the one on beam!! XD (52:02)
    Mustafina always seemed so happy when Komova was happy. It is clear that she cared more about Komova than her own medals. This made me like her even more.

    Komova is absolutely gorgeous to watch her grace and form . The extension in which she carries every single movement is mesmerizing. Gabby is a beautiful gymnast and definitely earned her AA without question. But it came down to Komova’s costly deductions on her vault landing that cost her the gold in my opinion. She’s so extremely hard on herself, after her big mistake on vault she performed her heart out and there’s no way that’s not something to be extremely proud of. What a tremendous competition these London Olympics were

    That in 2012 was a real AA final. From the scores of the year, Komova, Douglas, Raisman, Mustafina, Iordache, Wieber, anyone could had taken the gold and we had a big expectation on the OG. During the final, the top four girls fought tenth to tenth with near program level, anything could happen.

    Y’all. Kamova landed her vault on the uneven bars! Like she landed on the judging table. She ran off the mat and into the stands! Every step counts, then there is an additional penalty for landing outside, and then for stepping outside. That’s a LOT of deductions. Now if Aly had won with that frightening beam routine, then you could be pissed. But Gabby was cleaner. My heart still breaks for Kamova, it was just not her meet.

    • @murasakino101
      @murasakino101 3 года назад +9

      I agree. She still got a high vault score even with all the steps she took. Nowadays, if someone has that many steps on vault, their score would not be in the 15s. Komova did absolutely amazing but every deduction counts and gabby didn't have any major mistakes this day so idk why some people think the Americans were "unfairly overscored". Aly still did amazing as well
      Edit: the only thing I can say for sure was off was Gabby having less deductions than mustafina and a close score on bars. There was no way Gabby's score should have been that close when mustafina's routine was harder and almost perfect. Gabby still got her win regardless though and she worked hard

It’s an incredible honor, any athlete would give anything to win 1 medal, Beth Tweedle for instance was so happy about her bronze, and bronze is incredible. If you feel bad for Komova, think about the gymnasts who trained like crazy and won 0 medals, and would probably give anything to win any medal, whether it’s gold, silver or bronze. I'm not sure why they can't just "take it on the chin" but they can't. In all the decades of watching them compete, it's always the same attitude. If it's not gold, it's as devastating a loss as if they had come in last place.

Second in the all-around at the world championships in 2011, second in the team final in London, and then second in the all-around in London as well. She also had disappointing scores in the uneven bars final and the beam final too. She was truly one of the greatest gymnasts of her time and came so close to gold so many times. Same thing with country limitation rules: when sovietics and romanians filled the finals, everybody, inclusive the rising USA, was lobbing to create the rule. Now, these two decades that USA got the lead, every single american media and fan is "waaaaait, what unfair rule, look poor Wieber".

Once the 10.0 system was dropped, a lot of the politics fell out. It’s still there, but it’s just normal bias and not outright shenanigans. As judge you work hard to be as non biased as possible, but you get used to your federations style. And they are all correct. So it’s kind of crazy hard. I think the tie break at the olympics is stupid. They don’t do it at worlds ( watch Glasgow uneven bar event final ). Just the olympics, and the countries don’t like it either.

They only medaled that year because Ponor and Izbasa carried so much weight on their shoulders, after Iordache being injured and the other two not contributing much. Going into Rio I have had a thought that with just Ponor Romania would not make it to podium, they ended up worse: not even making the finals. In the States, you pretty much have to be rich or Biles level extraordinary to even be considered to be good enough to make the Olympic Team. Families of Olympians have actually gone into debt, but in the States, that’s just a personal problem and one individual doesn’t make or break the team.

That whole thing with Ali sticking her tongue out when they were talking about Gabby in the group in the olympic trials (I think it was), and just watching all of their demeanors throughout - I'm super happy she got this medal. She was (no clue if she still is) a very humble, sweet hearted young lady, and I love that she beat out all those teammates to get in, and win, the all around. Those girls were in a tough age where clicks and isolation was the norm - heck I know I did it back then. But when you're on a world stage, it's pretty hard to cover it up. Just watch when the team challenge went down - the hugs were more stand off ish with Gabby - you can see it in the competitions leading up to the olympics too.

      I agree. I think Komova would improve her performance overall if she fought a little more on her landings and skills. As soon as it's a little off she just throws it away. AA vault, beam final...

    Gah the final minutes when they were figuring who was gonna be gold vs silver& then who would be bronze & who would JUST MISSSS a medal was sooo heartwrenching & hard to watch- can't help but feel for Aly Raisman & Victoria Komova & Aliyah Mustafina... Obviously stoked Gabby won gold- go USA! But honestly, after seeing how devastated those poor girle on that entire Russian team were when they started having some issues on beam then virtually just fell apart on floor & were just having to stand there with cameras in their faces for the entire world to see while their little hearts were breaking knowing they lost any chance and gold- I'm kind of happy Aliyah ended up winning the tie for Bronze over Aly- that would have just been soooo cruel to see them lose their chance at team gold, THEN watch Komova's little heart breaking AGAIN when she loses gold to USA AGAIN individually- then if Mustafina ALSO would have lost that tie to finish out of the medals behind another USA gymnast?! Oh man.... I might have cried FOR them. And/or it might've just been the start of the Second Cold War....lol.
    Wonder why Aliyah kept going & ended up the captain even for the Rio games & did soooo well, but Komova obviously didn't...? She was arguably an even better Russian gymnast than Aliyah- and younger too i think? It makes me wonder if when you get your heart broken like that sometimes you just don't have it in you to put in ANOTHER FOUR YEARS to try again but, in reality, it's likely gonna end the same way or WORSE!?
    I've dealt with some pretty awful competetive heartbreak in my teens as well with my North American Junior Olympics for Equestrian 3 Day Eventing... I was leasing a loony little $4,000, muttly , funny colored, completely out of place looking 15h Anglo-Arabian/Registered Buckskin Paint gelding, Borys, who I began my partnership with by sheer chance at age 12 when my own horse came up lame 2 days before leaving for Northwest Area VII Championships& instead of having to scratch & be out around $500- a woman at the barn offered her horse to me at the very last ninute- I had to swap out of the Championship division since clearly I hadn't qualified on this horse I'd never even SAT ON until about 18hrs before my first ride time at the competition, after we arrived on the show grounds... And we ended up moving up from 24th after the 1st phase all the way to 7th after cross country because we were one of only a few pairs to complete the xc course penalty free- then with another flawless round in the final day- we finished in 4th- and even though my horse ended up only needing 8 weeks off& was ready to go again- I just fell in LOVE with Borys and so I continued leasing and competing him along with my own horse even once he was okay again... I was the first KID to try riding him & just wasn't TERRIFIED of what a lunatic he was when he jumped- like EVERY PREVIOUS OF HIS HAD BEEN!! So we ended up developing an amazing partnership & his owner even began looking into bigger, international competitions for us along with my trainer, and even started helping me out by paying for some of my training & lessons on HER horse, bought me the most beautiful, EXPENSIVE new tack & equipment whenever me or her horse needed something new for higher levels & even a nearly $700 GPA helmet to jump upper levels in so I'd be safer- she even began helping to pay for my show entry fees- first just the stabling fee or half of the total but eventually she paid for everything except my FOOD basically! And so between age 12 to 14 we moved up together from the 2nd lowest level to International levels- only about 2 levels below actual Olympics- in only two years without a single hiccup. I actually received the 4 necessary qualifying scores to enter our first ever FEI International competition at the CCI1* Long Format level at our very 1st 4 times moving up to that level- and at that competion- I ended up losing a tie for 2nd to finish in beyond respectable 3rd place & should have immediately been qualified for/been selected for our area's Jr Olympic team... Buuut.... I was just about 11 months TOO YOUNG To legally compete yet! I would've turned 15 that year but you had to turn 16 in that year to qualify... So. Instead of staying at the same level for another 2 years simply because I was already gonna be qualified seemed ridiculous when MAYBE, just MAYBE, instead we could work our BUTTS off and over the next 18months, we could move up to only ONE LEVEL below Olympics- Intermediate &CIC/CCI2**- and ride at the junior Olympics in the individuals for THAT LEVEL - since they didn't do teams at that level because there weren't enough 2* level riders between the ages of 16-21 in North America qualified to make up TEAMS... It's just about 25-30 individuals. So, I purposely passer up competing in the junior Olympics at the lower 1* level to instead be a SUPER badass and make my Jr Olympic debut again at the youngest legal age in the highest division there was... And I was qualified already by spring time, and the junior Olympics weren't until August in Kentucky- but in early summer, competing at a very difficult event I didn't even NEED to do to earn my place- my poor Borys was injured on Steeplechase - phase 2 of the 4 phases that make up the 2nd day- cross country... And it sadly turned out to be a pretty catastrophic, career ending, irreparable injury that never allowed him to jump above just about 2'6" again... Certainly was over with for being MY eventing partner and, I didn't know it THEN- but in those 90 seconds or so on Steeplechase whe he was injured- it ended my dreams of ever competing in the Junior Olympics or competing at that level or caliber again. I got sooo lucky to have this insane but insanely TALENTED little horse fall into my lap, who was only $4,000 but who I was able to build a partnership with to rival the riders with $80,000 been there done that fancy horses & compete at that same high of a level... And that dream got destroyed when he got hurt- I tried for the next 6 years to get to even the level I was at at age 14 again but it just never happened- its an unbelievable kind of heartbreak someone who's never competed at a high level of a sport and had to face such heartbreak could ever understand.... And so often it really IS your one & ONLY opportunity & if you blow it...? You'll NEVER get another chance!!! It's soooo sad but true!!
