The Story of Robo Force: Murdered by Transformers

  • Robo Force was a toy line created by the Ideal Toy Company in the year 1984 for CBS Toys.
A series of squat robots with suction cup bases Robo Force was lead by Maxx Steele in their fight against Hun Dred and the evil Nazgar.
Robo Force also had an incredible amount of marketing behind it, sure that it would be the next big thing. But what Ideal and CBS couldn't have seen coming was the pop culture juggernaut that was the Transformers.

Robo Force: CRIMINALLY under-rated! I can quite categorically confirm that the line was known as "The Robots" here in the UK, although some figures were available as Robo Force as late as 1990 in places like Woolworth's and other cheapo import outlets which have since long departed the high streets.
Personally, I have Maxx Steele, Coptor, Wrecker, Blazer, Hun-Dred, Enemy, the Robocruiser and the Fortress Of Steele. In European markets, Coptor was marketed as an evil robot - maybe to even out the good guys and the bad guys, but most probably because on one publicity photo Coptor was positioned closest to the evil robots and the European sales reps mistakenly made the assumption that Coptor was a bad guy himself.
I have to side with Michael from RetroBlasting by saying that Robo Force has a lot of heart - because they are the robots that hug you back.

  • @IffyJottere

I actually had one or two of these... could never find any others. I know for sure used to own Cruel, the Detonator, and may also have had Hun-dred. That name certainly sounded familiar. This, and Starriors, were the most obscure robot toys I ever owned. Maybe I had a Maxx Steele or Sentinel, as well, I forget how many I had. They were goofy fun though! I'd seen enough "retro-futuristic" 60s and 70s sci-fi in TV reruns to understand what they were going for in this toy line. I still liked even my Go-bots better though.

Thanks so much for reviewing Roboforce - I _LOVED_ these toys when I was a kid! Sure they were chunky, yes they didn't have nearly as much playability as Transformers, but that never mattered to an imaginative 10 year old. The character designs were very unique, indelible (I still like those designs), and - I think, spoke well to each robot's personality.
On a down note: advertisements for the Robocruiser were highly misleading; the way it was described led you to believe it floated on a cushion of air... fast forward to Christmas morning, and imagine my disappointment when it not only stayed flush to the floor, it barely moved at all. : / I guess Robotech just wasn't popular enough for a class action lawsuit. 🤷‍♂️

But then selling repackaged robo machine's with unchanged faces was dishonest and shameful, Tonka killed the gobots by devising a shit story line seemingly scribbled on the back of a beer mat in ten seconds, now as a kid in the 80s i wasnt stupid enough to fall for that, but as an adult i now collect machine robo,i love them, but the word gobots is banned in my house 😉,you can thank tonka for that not tf

Someone got me S.O.T.A. for my birthday and it came with a mini-comic that didn't really make much sense. A couple of my friends had modest collections of them, but they usually ended up being bad guys for Transformers and Star Wars figures to shoot at.

I think the problem was stated pretty poignantly. Voltron, Transformers, and Go-bots looked more advanced because they were humanoids. They had human forms and human faces, and that was where the fictitious 80's robot was going. Robo Force not only looked like 60s and 70's sci-fi, but they're downright preschooly. They can give it as mature and dark an origin as possible, but the toys themselves looked like something you'd get horrifically picked on if you had them past the age of five. The human and main villain figures would have probably boosted sales, as they look a little more G.I. Joe-esque, something for an older audience. But the juvenile, retro look just wouldn't have appealed to kids unless the line came out or 3 years earlier. Had this been tail end of the 70's, it would have done gangbusters.

Do a segment on "The Little Rascals!" Before the 80s animation boom, The Little Rascals was a staple of daytime children's programming, and they even had a cartoon and a toylike in the late 1970s.

I think that PACE Toys got the license or something to the human figures of the Robo Force toyline. Professor Hacksaw Hacket looks so much like the main kid: www.action-figures.ca/earth_force.htm I love the clunky damn robots, they're the only kind of robots I ever want to see in real life. Not those horrific Boston Dynamics robots that are surely going to be the killing machines for the AI when Singularity happens.

I had odd memories of Robo Force. Just slightly too young to enjoy their initial launch, I remember them most from friends' hand-me-down collections or from yard sales. I actually bought several of the ToyFinity releases and was part of their Club Zeton for its inaugural year. I'd still love to see them do a Blazer or Vulgar

10:30 I remember seeing commercials for these as a kid, and this quote is totally right. Even as a little kid, they seemed klunky and out-of-date. Well, except for that awesome working robot, of course, but my god, that pricetag. $600 in 1984 was (googles) FIFTEEN HUNDRED DOLLARS today. That was as much as a decent computer! What parent would buy a toy that expensive, except actual one-percenters?

I used the few Robo Force I had as "background robots," like you'd see in Star Wars. The exception was Blazer: he got to play Dalek in my Food Stamp Cinematic Universe: GI Joe vs Secret Wars vs Super Powers vs Transformers. He-Man, whose toy size was just incompatible, didn't get a good movie in my universe either. 😥😁

I remember watching the one episode as a kid on one of our local L.A. channels. The following day at school, all my friends were playing as characters. Some of them had the figures. But, the one thing that we all agreed upon was that Maxx Steele was too powerful. Even as 8-year-old kids, we noticed that. It was a turn-off and we quickly forgot about Robo Force.

11:40 "... the kind of engineering that Hasbro and Tonka were producing..." Well, all of that engineering was done by Takara and Bandai/Popy.
Anyway, I'm not even sure if its pilot episode aired even once where I lived. My memory of it is that where I had been eagerly waiting for it to air all day, but where I lived (Massachusetts), the show was pre-empted for something else, and I never got to watch it. My dad even called the station to see if it would ever be re-aired (which it wasn't).

I specifically remember having Hun-Dred: The Conqueror, Vulgar: The Destroyer, and multiple robots on Max Steele's team but I don't remember their names because they weren't as interesting (one was grey/blue, though.) :EDIT: It was S.O.T.A., I totally remember that pop-up target thing on his head. Man oh man! I played with these things til they fell apart, and then kept playing with them. So awesome, the big suction cup bottoms.
Also, do you guys have any plans for an Air Raiders episode sometime, maybe? I think the Air Raiders are comparable to Starcom for obscurity and how long they lasted (which is really too bad, because both were pretty damn rad.)

I've been watching this channel for amor a year, but it just hit me because of this episode that a big part of why is because it's a bit like Toyfare magazine. Robo Force was one of the articles I remember reading in the early 2000's, so it's cool seeing this topic in much more detail than what I returned seeing at the time. Quite the pleasant blast from the past
