Ferrari 488 Spider review: open-top opens up 660bhp V8 and flies

- We already knew the 488 was good, but the stunning Ferrari 488 Spider adds another layer of involvement to the driving experience. With the folding hard-top stowed, it gets you closer to the sound and speed of the car’s explosive V8. Yet it’s just as usable every day as the coupe. At £204,400, the Spider isn’t cheap, but for ultimate high-performance, wind-in-the-hair thrills, the Ferrari is the ultimate open-top supercar.

Will this one out run the Audi R8 v10 plus ?? I love the new r8 I just reviewed! It's awesome!
OMG MOHO, I love your video of the new R8 v10 plus. I heard you just bought one also. I'm so jealous. Enjoy it Moho!!
I'm a subscriber Automoho! How you is your m6 gran coupe?
I just purchase a white m6 and I'm loving it
Probably yes if it's a press car and no otherwise.
The 488 Spider & GTB have 670 PS. The Audi R8 V10plus has 610. I don't know the weights by heart, but I'm guessing they should be similar. So additionally considering the extra torque that turbocharging brings, I'd wager the Ferrari wins.
But you were just advertising your video, weren't you? ;)
Another badass review from the venerable Steve. Hats off, sir!
How do you compare this to the 675LT spyder? similar or much different and would you say the LT is better car?
675LT is an absolute masterpiece of raw pure drivers car
But Sutcliffe, didn't you say in a previous video that you would take a 911 turbo S over the 488 coupe, which is better than the spider so you're still taking the turbo S over this thing, right?
Steve is the man that keeps me watching, his excitement when he does these reviews makes me wish I was in the car with him and experiencing the thrill
omg that silver gauge is GORGEOUS
Yea, was just about to write that. It's so much nicer than yellow or red.
Not true. Aluminum tach is an option.
Perfect color for it. Looks amazing in that blue.
Now that Chris Harris is gone from RUclips, I hand over the RUclips review Crown to you Steve! I have always loved your reviews, I really look up to you mate. And as other people have said before Steve, you need your own YT Channel. Simply brilliant! :)
Evo is up there with the in-car laps they do.
great review but too short, want more of this!!
can we safely assume Sutcliffe loves this car?
I've been watching Steve ever since his review on the F12 Berlinetta for Autocar which was years ago and he is the best reviewer. Give this man a 488 gtb plz.
He's right, he can slide the 488 like he does in BMW M3, all he needed is turn couple degrees higher than the corner then use the throttle to control the slide, aside from Gen II SSC rear diff during corner entry, at corner exit, the F1-Trac traction control will cut power for longitudinal traction. It's very controllable especially the engine out-put is limited in 1st to 4th gear. This helps a lot in reducing turning radius while remaining effective amount of longitudinal traction for accelerate. The engine response is quick. the 488 is just 0.1 sec slower from 2000-8000 rpm compared to 458's F136 in 3rd gear. That's very quick for turbocharged engines not to mention the turbo isn't at full boost from 1st to 4th due to traction.
Killed the v8 soundtrack when they turbo'd it
Great video. But I would like to see how this supercar handles in the wet, So tell me?
Been waiting eagerly for this since I saw the trailer! But why only 5 minutes?!!
The voice over at the beginning sounded a bit muted for some reason. Needs to be more crisp and clear. Great video though what a beautiful car.
one of the best videos by auto express...
you're running out of superlatives. Is this more superlative than the C63S or the same? I can't tell!
It would be even more incredible if it had more over the top turbo noises, like the ones you get from the Huayra.
what colour is that Ferrari?
When Steve does a review, it should automatically be 10min. His reviews are to good to be this short.
That has to be one of the best looking (modern) cars ever made..especially in that paint color.
superb looks and a little bit less noisy but 0 to 60 n 3 holy moly wicked keep on making these dream cars Ferrari and keep the dream alive
what's the name of the piano piece playing at the beginning?
very good photographer. great video. thank u.
At some point the reviewer does have to put it into context versus it's competition. I'm sure the car companies hate it when you do it, but I think the viewers would love to know if said reviewer prefers it over the Mclaren 675lt e.g. and why.
I don't mean in a lap time type of test that requires you to have both or all cars at a given time (especially considering Ferrari trying to influence the test by sending a full support staff with the car like in the past), but rather is this the reviewer's favourite car in the segment? Would he/she rather buy this if he/she could over the competition?
Very good point
Moreover, this car is the equivalent of the 650S, which has a carbon tub that guarantees more rigidity overall, plus a softer ride. The 488 has better noise and throttle response, but is also doesn't have the theater of active aero and dihedral doors. Personally, I'd still take the McLaren, and throw an IPE on it.
Sorry, I'm sure you meant Mclaren sending an entire team of technicians and a lot of tires, AND demanded multiple runs so that they could improve their time and beat 918, both at EVO and Motor Trend. But as always it's much more fun to only point finger at the nr 1.
Fast Er No I meant Ferrari (and I love Ferrari's). Just google Chris Harris' article on the subject.
Heck, I did it for you: jalopnik.com/5760248/how-ferrari-spins
Also, I wasn't actually taking a shot at Ferrari.
mrm95 I know, I was just joking, he mentioned that the cars are already great and didn't need all that, but Ferrari was too controlling over all aspects of a test drive, and made sure the car is at it's best for a specific track.
And that was years ago and Ferrari have forgiven him since long ago. Thing is Mclaren is doing even worse stuff and it's as if it's fine as long as it's not Ferrari. People crucify Ferrari for the smallest thing but let others go.
What's the name of that colour? I thought it was Blu Nart, but I'm not sure.
it's Blue Corsa, Blue Nart is a deeper colour
I was ready to rage when he said there were two problems with the 488. Well played sir.
where is he driving the car?
I would love to see Ferrari's PR person's face when they saw the shot of that thing going airborne.
What's the music at the 3:30s mark????
Another great review Steve, makes you want to own one!
Steve needs his own channel!
Great review guys :)
Ferrari are thoroughly in a different class, above all others.
Its beautiful! I don't know why people are calling this boring. Its clearly not. It might not sound as edgy as the 458 but apart from that, its better in every way.
what is the song at the end
im gonna be honest. unless you go to the track and race these cars side by side, it doesn't matter which one performs better because the difference is in 100s of a second. the 458 sounds a million dollars where this seems to cut out after 3 or 4000rpm and after that it sounds like a blowdryer.
when the LFA came out people didn't buy it because it was 0.0002 seconds slower than the rest but overall it was a much better car and its much more fun to drive and in years to come it will appreciate in value much more
Ferrari doing what they do best.
It absolutely floors me to see so many people able to afford this beautiful machine. Kinda takes the exclusivity away a bit. Still, if you've got the means....
challenger hellcat has 707hp compared to a ferrari with 660, kinda awkward
@Creepychewy12345 Not really, which is faster?
+MrPro10 hellcat challenger: 707 hp top speed 202 mph $50,000-$70,000///Ferrari 488: 661 hp top speed 205 mph $120,000-$180,000, a muscle car that costs 2x less than a supercar performs the same for a more affordable price.
Creepychewy12345 My comment was not meant to commence a comparison against one car to another.
This being said, why in God's name would someone even consider something like a Hellcat when they have the means to pick up a Ferrari??
We can compare anything on paper against each other. Clearly this is something important to you. By all means. If you want to pickup the Hellcat over the Ferrari, go for it.
+Chris Juarez im saying the ferrari is overpriced, and the hellcat is affordable to the less wealthy people.
great review! I want one now
Amazing, i love ferrari, sadly i cant afford them. But wow, what a beautiful machine it is
I wonder which magazine will actually get the balls to go against Ferrari's will and get the Comparison test done with Mclaren 650S....
Great video, but I was expecting something longer.... Well done though.
Music at beginning?
Splendid Steve, splendid 👏🏼
This looks like a great car except for one thing not mentioned ... how would it (and the people in it) fare in a high speed front end crash ? A car with this much power, engine position and roof chopped off needs a carbon tub.
If in doubt search for russian mercielago crash.
Such a good driver!
Can I haz one?
Steve, you're the goat
wish yuns showed the motion of the top
DUDE! You need to get a RUclips channel like Smee because he is generating enough cheese to buy a McLaren 675 LT spider, a Aston GTR and a fucking Ford GT.
I like you better anyway.
daddy's money. sure he has earned some of his own, but it's off daddy's back
He's not getting the money to afford those cars through RUclips.
PunyDeano
No daddy is giving Smee millions in liquid assets to buy all those whips.
Face it, those subscriptions pay big bucks.
Those car channels are pretty bad but Schmee150 is the only one of those guys that IS actually making money from RUclips and supporting himself. He gets decent money from RUclips ad revenue but he has such a big following that he can make money from multiple sources, like for instance, when he posts some photos on Facebook, the photographer will have paid him for that, not a huge amount, I imagine £100, £200, but when you see he is posting multiple things on facebook, twitter etc EVERY day then it adds up. I Imagine he's probably earning in the region of £350k-£400k from his 'brand'. All the other guys are trying to copy him but none of them are doing anything like the same numbers. I like Schmee and Seen Through Glass is ok too, but all the others are pretty bad. Supercars Of London knows nothing about cars, Seb Delaney is just a dreadful obnoxious child, Mr JWW is a mixture of the previous two, except he wears £10k watches and has this pretentious, alpha male vibe about him, but his videos arn't even paying for the fuel. They're all wealthy dudes, from wealthy families, but only Schmee is actually making serious money.
*****
I have a sneaky suspicion that Smee is gay. I'm not mad at him but I don't see him with any bitches.
If I had the money I'd buy a 458 over the 488, would save quite a bit of money and I think the performance/sound/appearance of the 458 would be more than enough to make me forget about any HP gains I could have had with the 488
New shirt Steve?
This or the Huracan spider?
Rocking in a free world Hurucan has a much more powerful and enjoyable personality and sounds way better
As someone who's driven both. Id have the Ferrari over the Huracan any day! The Huracan sounded great but it was very uncomfortable and had no steering feel. The 488 was much more fun and engaging to drive.
W-James I respectfully disagree, sure the Ferrari might steer better/make the driver feel like they have a greater connection to the road but here is a thing to consider, if you are after that then there is the huracan lp-580-2 which solves that problem as well as the performante which kicks the 488s ass with all due respect
And even tho the awd hurucan does not offer a similar degree/connection to the road, just the fact that it sounds insanely better and looks better is the perfect recipe for it to be a more desirable supercar
For me the sound alone of the huracan makes it more fun to drive.
But I respect your opinion At the end of the day :p
I know the LP580-2 is an improvement. But the ride quality will be just as horrendous. Performance wise the 488 demolishes any V10 Lambo, its unbelievably fast. I realised that after completing my first lap in the 488 just after getting out of the Huracan. Also the 488 has a much better interior, unlike the Huracan, there were no cheep plastics, it was all leather, carbon fibre and aluminium and it was all focused round the driver.
Driver involvement is for me, the top priority of any car. If the driver doesn't feel involved in the experience then you will get bored of it very quickly and the little niggles will become more apparent. Heres what Clarkson said about the 488… "I’d use it to go everywhere. I would take it on unnecessary journeys. I would volunteer to run errands for friends. And I would be happy when one of the children rang at three in the morning to say they had no money and couldn’t get home. Because I could go and pick them up.
There are those who say that a 488 is not a proper Ferrari because it’s turbocharged. And that turbocharging has no place on such a thoroughbred. They argue that it’s turbocharged only so that it can meet EU emission regulations and that sticking to the letter of the law flies in the face of the Ferrari ethos. A Ferrari is about freedom and adrenaline and speed and passion and beauty and soul. It’s not about carbon dioxide and bureaucracy.
Yes. I get that. But let’s not forget Gilles Villeneuve’s Ferrari race car was turbocharged or that the best Ferrari of them all - the F40 - used forced induction. And also let’s not forget that thanks to modern engine management systems, you simply don’t know that witchcraft is being used to pump fuel and air into the V8. It doesn’t even sound turbocharged. It sounds like a Ferrari. It sounds baleful. It sounds wonderful."
Looks are subjective. I don't like the look of the standard AWD huracan. But the RWD version looks allot better, but the 488 looks best imo. It looks both elegant and aggressive.
W-James wrong the ride quality is better than you make it seem and you don't have to take my word for it many reviewers say this.
You are also wrong your other statement. The hurucan performanté rapes the 488 silly . This is fact, it Even holds the fastest lap time on the nurburgring for a production car... So you ought to retake that outrageous claim of yours back :p
And no the interior is not bad. Sure the Ferrari has better build quality bit only to sone extent.... Even so supercars aren't about being comfortable so much as they are about making you feel alive. The hurucan interior looks Much better than the Ferrari and is much better at giving the car a colour scheme not just coloured stiching, the whole bottom half/full dash follows the customers desired colour scheme as well as the seats. So it looks much more sporty and special... heck even the way to start it is like a jet fighter and makes you feel more special then on the Ferrari, not to mention the virtual cockpit it has which is also amazing
For me supercars are about putting a smile on your face and the hurucan masters that. It still has great driver engagement just not as good as the Ferraris who have an f1 team... However the hurucan sounds WAY BETTER than the Ferrari and looks way better and it crackles on very downshift and gives you the goose bumps making it thrilling to drive as it is to look at. To me that more than makes up for not being as driver engaging as the Ferrari. For me it's the Ferrari you would get bored off. Sound is a huge factor of a supercar and the 488 is a downgrade from a 458. There is no good reason to get a 488 over say a 458 speciale. Whereas the huracan is miles better than the l
gallardo superleggera
Yes the 488 is not a proper Ferrari and don't give me the carbon emmisons excuse what a joke. If Ferrari cared so much about the environment why is the laferrari a na v12, why is the f12 and Even the new super fast a na engine? There is no excuse. Lamborghini made the right decision in keeping the na v10 alive
The 488 sounds like a dying seagul when compared to the hurucan and even it's predessor the 458 which is a shame since the noise a supercar makes is as important as the voice of a Singer sounds for a song
Ya looks are subjective but most people agree that the hurucan is the better looking one or at least a has more presence/looks more like a super car. Proof? If the hurucan and 488 were side by side in a downtown area the hurucan would get more looks because of how stunning and neck breaking it is. It looks Like it means business. Ferrari ruined the front of the 488 with those hidious pillars that make the car look as tho it has Buck teeth. They nailed the back of it tho.
Ferrari looks more elegant but the Lamborghini looks more aggressive/athletic/like a super car thanks to it's more pronounced edges and proportions
Even though I love the retractable hardtop, I'd still go with a Huracan coupe over this. All-wheel-drive, a naturally-aspirated V10, and VW Group reliability? Yes please.
You should go with the Audi R8 V10 Plus then, since it's cheaper than the Huracan and just as capable.
Al. Murtaqa I love the R8, but would never get the Spyder because I hate softtops. Also, I'd get the Huracan over the R8 just because I prefer the exclusivity and more exaggerated styling of it over the R8.
+David T. Oh, fair point.
Audio sounds muffled.
Anyone else think the body overhangs the wheels a touch too much?
The narrator sounds like Johny Ive from Apple.
That's some air!
The only lack in this video is the duration
Why life so bad ??? 😣 I want this car , but there is not enough money 💰 feel bad about 😣
A good woman beats any car on this planet,to me
+dacid kapura Verily, but that takes even more money than the cars do!
did you record the voice over in a tilled bathroom?! couldn't make out a single word!
Lol 5 dislikes. Why? Who? Wtf?!?!?! Awesome car
chris harriss, batchlor , drive , top gear , shmee
pull the other one Sutcliffe you're MINTED
These things are huge. They cannot be used on most roads.
Stop showing ads its really bad
I totally agree , Those 2 problems its why i cant to buy it.
A Ferrari V8 bi turbo from factory? I'm waiting to see these car crazies to start messing up with the engine ECU and making it touch 700+hp...
it sounds fine but the 458 sounded way, way better but that's turbos for ya.
It lacks only 1000 rpm (8000) compared to 458 (9000). Considering it's a smaller engine with turbo, it's still best sounding turbo engine out there.
McLaren's turbo V8 sounds a bit better and the AMG 4.0L turbo V8 sounds a lot better and is probably the best sounding turbo engine.
Nicholas Smith They sound good but not nearly as good as 488. But that is a personal preference. Mclaren's engine sound is one of it's weak points. When you drive it hard, maybe, but at low revs, not so much.
You're right that it can rev out to 8000 but from all the reviews I've seen it's rarely useable. It just produces so much more mid range torque and power that you run out of road or grip before you get there. Depends what you prefer but personally I'd rather be wringing the neck off the NA engine in it's predecessor.
Gazman Yes, but the good thing is Ferrari, contrary to others, doesn't give you max torque at 1500 rpm, but increases torque with every higher gear. That is so to give the driver a feel of driving a NA engine. Mclaren, Porsche, Corvette, they all give you max torque at very low rpm and then you barely need to shift any gears.
I think this 488 might outrun an Aventador from a second gear roll on....
did it win le mans? o the ford gt did
This car looks like Jessica Alba in a cobalt blue bikini 😍😍 Ferrari are still the benchmark sorry Lambo and Macca fans
3:36
just adding a third problem: the new Porsche 991 GT2.
Save some money, and buy it.
Did u just say it sounds nice?
I like the Porsche 911 Turbo S more!
You crazy dog why do you drive this fast on public roads? I mean what if there comes an Elephant out in the road? Take it to track where there is no wildlife..
Ferrari really knows how to make a super car, even if it is more of a evolution from the 458 its still top of its class (over the Huracan and 650S) though, i personally still prefer the Mclaren over the Ferrari
650S, walking away, any day of the week.
Are you kidding me, Ferrari all day long over mclaren
Constantine Joseph fight me irl m8
+justin bouche sure, you'd like to face a loaded AR15? I dare you to step on my lawn ;)
AR15? please, M16 is a real mans rifle, keep your media praised AR15 "assault rifle" bahaha.
Unbelievable
Please speak louder!!!!On your videos I can barely hear what you are saying ,
Ferrari 488 spider sexy!
Now the prancing horse as wings??
Btw this blue hue is hypnotizing and Ferrari is and always be the standard. Mclaren 650 is a great performer but not as beautiful and Lamborghini is great looking but no where the performer.. But Ferrari, has the INTANGIBLE of being both beauty meets absolute performance!!
huh. i thought the huracan was faster than this around tracks even though it's cheaper and came out earlier. and drag races. (talking hard tops here though, not sure about spyders)
*Hockenheim Short:*
Huracan LP610-4: 1:07.5
488 GTB: 1:08.3
*0-200kph:*
Huracan LP610-4: 7.9
488 GTB: 8.1
how is it "nowhere the performer"?
the usual excuse for ferrari lovers is more reasonable. that the ferrari has better feel, better driver involvement and whatnot.
+GraveUypo
When I was referring to PERFORMER I was talking about the Farrari as a RWD fun car as opposed to the AWD that is on the Lamborghini. Now if Lamborghini had 650+ from a RWD I am sure there would be more crashes then the mustang owners would allow.
ytwizzle
you mean this one?
www.topgear.com/car-news/la-motor-show/revealed-lamborghinis-new-rear-wheel-drive-huracan
okay, it's 570, but let's not nitpick.
besides, that's not what performer means.
but but but it's a turbo charge
docent sound as good as the 458
💯
the dodge challenger hellcat srt 2016 has 707 hp, surprises me that this doesnt have more.
One of those cars has been honed and refined and designed very carefully to make that power usable and amazing fun to drive, the other is just a piece of shit with a powerful engine attached to it.
+MrPro10 Couldn't have said it better myself.
+MrPro10 lol supercar fanboys, I actually love ferraris too.
maybe the challenger will get more respect if it can actually floor the power
ok
A little too much whisper in your whisper talk
a nip here a tuck there and change the air dams around a lil, strap turbos on it and the 458 becomes the 488... mmmmm unimpressive, and uninspiring
Got 11 seconds in when I had to stop watching....
Steve I expect something more special from u
458>488
Steve I expect something more special from u
