I adore the ghost mechanic, standees, and online in general. I can’t tell you how many times random people have literally waited for me during a level so that they could revive me when I was struggling. And I would just think, wow, this is so cool, and this random person is SO kind! Just warms your heart and makes you smile.
Or when someone leaves you an item bubble or has placed a standee in an absolutely clutch location?? Incredible. Love love love.
    Arlo, you gotta try online.

It sounds like the bosses should have taken inspiration from Yoshis Island. Each boss on that game is a regular enemy that gets modified by Kamek to become a boss. Basically the same as a wonder flower actually. Would have been amazing here!

To be fair, in previous Mario games Yoshi would either sit still when unmounted and not take damage from enemies, or get hit while you ride him making him run around in a panic. Both of those aren’t getting damaged and getting weaker, so Yoshi being baby mode like that when fully playable is consistent and does add multiple baby mode characters than just Nabbit if you’re playing with multiple kids

  • @howdyfriends7950

this is an amazing non-arlocast discussion between friends, i really resonated with basically everything you said about this game.
something very strange i noticed was like this game is almost like a 2D platformer version of a warioware game, where any time you grab a wonder flower you just need to figure out wtf is going on and react to it before you die.
it's got the same surreal-ness as the first NSMB game on your very first playthrough, where you're a 12 year old and you get the mega mushroom and rampage through the stage destroying everything, it's like the developers put in such an immense amount of labor implementing different mechanics so you can get an experience like 12yo you's first mega mushroom once per stage, which is just an incredible feat.
i have never been a fan of the mario formula of like going to different stages and running right, but this is the first 2D mario since either SMB or SMB2-J that has actually held my attention, gone the whole 100% savefile without ever feeling like a slog, and just been a game that i would like to play through multiple times. truly excellent work to the development team on this one, i am not a 2D mario fan but i greatly appreciate and am so grateful for the amount of love and labor that you put into this game.
i adore this new direction for nintendo, where they're willing to give projects like wonder and tears of the kingdom the time and labor that they need in order to be good games, they're not rushing it out the door because there's an anime and trading card game contingent on them meeting a deadline (cougn gamefreak), or hyping everyone up for a hard release deadline months before they have an accurate picture of when the game will be complete and ready to ship (cough cyberpunk, no man's sky, multiversus)
honestly, if there is anything to be learned from the truly astounding commercial success of games like mario wonder, tears of the kingdom, baldur's gate 3, elden ring, etc.
it's that development teams don't need to rush it out the door or meet some self-imposed release deadline to make a profit.
i really really hope that triple-A development studios take notes from the success of these games, as well as more laborious indie games like silksong or deltarune, when those come out, that in consumers' eyes (unless you're not gonna live six months) it is infinitely preferable for a game to have a six month delay and release in a completed state than for you to just push whatever garbage you've got out the door right now and then fix it with patches as you slowly lose trust and deal with that PR nightmare.
I HAVE ENOUGH GAMES TO PLAY, i don't NEED silksong right now, i can wait, and I'm happy to wait, because i trust team cherry and know that the wait time just means they're making the game better.
also, as a side note, it is 1000x easier to optimize a game's performance BEFORE everything gets stamped onto 10 million cartridges.
we are never going to have a pokemon scarlet and violet that runs well on the nintendo switch, because that's just a fundamental limitation of what the patches can do, given the state of the base game, code, and 99% of the assets existing on unchangeable media!
unless you're gonna let us write to cartridges (approximately zero chance of that happening due to nintendo's endless battle against piracy), this will always be the case!
please, major game studios, take notes, hire the staff required to make something good, give your developers the time they need to finish what they're working on so you can release it in a state that they're comfortable with. it's not a lot to ask for, literally just delay the game, i promise we can wait, the PR is way better with a game that got delayed because it's not ready than a game that released in an unfinished state.
please, please, if you give your games the time and attention they deserve, hire enough labor, and push back the release until the game is actually finished, it will be very good PR, and i will be your loyal customer forever.
and if you fail to do this, if you release an unfinished mess, you've lost my good graces, you'll stay in my doghouse until you win me back.
i am never going to buy any games from CD projekt red (cyberpunk) or hello games (no man's sky), and even as a lifelong pokemon fan and fairly serious about competitve pokemon, i am sincerely planning on waiting for reviews on the next mainline pokemon game to see if it's actually good before buying it, instead of preordering like i usually do, i just don't want to play half-finished games anymore when there's so many other titles out there to play.
hell, you know you can export the optimization concurrently with the development if you really need to! that's always a thing you can do, and it'll cost like 1/10 of the increased sales you'll get from all the good reviews. the only downside is the risk of leaks, but now that dev studio is incentivized, if they ever want your business again, to protect the crap out of it.
thanks for reading my long rambling mess of a comment!
the key takeaway is that mario wonder is the best 2D mario game of all time, and game studios please hire more staff, push back release, give your games the time and labor they need to actually be good, your IP deserves so much better than the way your board of directors are treating it, depriving it of investment and sucking it dry like a vampire.
anyway, thanks for reading this, like the comment if you agree with what i said (like i need to tell you that), and have a nice rest of your day.
go play super mario RPG, that remake is way better than what they did with link's awakening, and if you weren't alive for the SNES or you've just never played that game before, it's worth the money.
it's a very good game, kinda like superstar saga crossed with final fantasy, and if you don't have $60, then go emulate the SNES one.
it's good, but there's tons of QoL improvements and a few new things in the switch one... oh god, i'm rambling again, gotta go, kids to feed, i left the oven on, the casserole is burned, my house is now engulfed in flames, I've lost everything meaningful to me, see you around

One really neat detail I haven't seen mencioned is how the background of the same world, even if similar, actually reflect where the level is located on the world map. Like two levels in the desert could have the same background, but the position of the castle chages depending where they are

I'm not one of those people that straight up hates water levels but the water worlds in the New Soups always felt like such a slog, even to me. I think Mario Wonder is the perfect encapsulation of why I fell in love with Nintendo.
Before, my favorite game of all time was Wii Sports Resort. It's simple but fun gameplay, its variety of content, it's charming locations and music, and all the cool secrets i admittedly never found as a kid made it my go-to video game. It's the type of game where I spent a considerable amount of time just sitting on the menus.
In a weird way, Mario Wonder feels like the modern version of that. It's already fun enough when you're actually treating it like a game, but it also gives you the tools to find your own enjoyment in it.
Plus, as a Mario fan, it feels like it took inspiration from a bunch of different games. Mario 3D World's overworld exploration, the structure of finding all the Royal seeds feels very Paper Mario-esq, the Wonder transformations give me big Yoshi's Island/ Mario Odyssey vibes, some of the bonus levels feel straight out of Mario Maker, and etc.
Despite the admittedly dissapointing bosses, I consider this game a masterpiece. And I don't see this changing for me anytime soon.

Hey Arlo, Nathaniel Bandy and Antdude! Glad to see you all talking about this game and I'm absolutely loving it myself. Mario Wonder is my favorite 2D Mario game now and I love how creative this game is. I'm so happy to finally have a modern Super Mario Bros game as ambitious and creative as the 3D Mario games like Galaxy. Wonder and Galaxy are my favorite Mario platformers and I'm so glad to see ambition and creativity back and better than ever across the whole series now, with the traditional Mario RPGs that everyone knows and loves making a triumphant return with beautiful modern remakes with Mario RPG and Thousand Year Door remake too, and I'm so glad to see creativity, ambition and wonder and that fun whimsical spirit completely back in 2D Mario thanks to Wonder, which has unlocked practically unlimited potential for where 2D Mario can go and expand thanks to how solid and good and fleshed-out this game is. Badges, literally game-changing mechanics like the Wonder Flower, and this game's beautiful presentation and completely fleshed-out and interesting world have so much potential for sequels and future 2D Mario games. Imagine having another 2D Mario game as fresh and fun as this but in a Mushroom Kingdom that feels really distinct and interconnected like the Flower Kingdom does here. That would be great I think.

My solution to the badge problem would be to have each character keep their own unique ability from previous games and also let you pick a badge. So it would be like you have two, and some badges can give abilities like Peach's float to another if you want, but Peach would always have float, etc. That would make the characters still feel unique, and give some incentive to playing others while not forcing you to. Having levels crammed full with secrets only accessible by certain character abilities/badges would also help with them not feeling useless, as well as give more re-playability.

I guess online isn't for everyone but I'd say to people, you should try the online. It changes the experience of this game drastically, and for better. Like, this is Nintendo's best realized Online concept ever. It works flawlessly and you connect with everyone without the need of something like voice chat. I was amazed

I decided to play with the online mode turned on after listening to this. It’s actually quite fun! It’s also fun to help people out. It does make the game easier a bit, but I think it actually removes more frustrating aspects of dyeing and waiting for the level to reload.

Multiplayer online is so good! I would have never beaten many of the levels without help from the ghosts. I played mainly light blue Yoshi and since I didn't need power-ups I would drop them for other ghosts to use. It was so great! Luigi and Princess Daisy for the levels that required power-ups to beat. Nabbit was fun for different looking transformations. But the one time I was able to play with my family, we all had the best time with yoshis. Accidentally riding each other, saving someone from death, and the ability for my family members to use a character that wouldn't die. Helped us have so much fun. This is my all-time favorite mario game, with Galaxy coming in second. ❤

I think that with badges, it would be perfect to be able to equip one of each "type" of badge. One action badge, so that you don't have complications with two actions bound to the same button, and then one boost badge so that you can have both better platforming and something powerup or coin related.

  • @michaellane5381
    @michaellane5381 11 месяцев назад

Fyi Arlo, there are some badges that are almost straight up upgrades to other ones, for example "verticle wall jump" is just a +1 jump when wall jumping, the "grapple vine" however, give INFINITE Wall jumps... From a distance.
There might be small tight windows with the former being nichely better, but like 90% of them would be better with the latter for everything except speed.
Edit: agree with you all on the bosses, was entirely anticipating koopaling shenanigans and was sad to not see them, i was hoping they had some post-game raids or war-camp clean up.

I always like to note that NSMB DS and Wii, the two commonly regarded “Better” entries, had the same director, whereas U was made by some guy who mostly did some level design work here and there and 2 by the guy who created Nintendo’s squeaker online shooter. The director of Wonder is the guy responsible for giving U Deluxe a little more personality than the original had. So him getting to make a game of his own and it turning out this good is pretty nice

I think my only issue with the game was the fact that it was surprisingly easy throughout the whole game compared to past 2D Mario's. Even the levels the developers themselves rated as "five stars" I found fairly easy. Oh and I was a little sad there weren't more power ups present.
But other than that I loved everything else about the game.

    • @jaretco6423

Granted, alot of Mario games are easy. Even the retro games or 3D games are easy. Like is there any Mario game that's difficult?

    • @slenderfoxx3797
      @slenderfoxx3797 10 месяцев назад

@@jaretco6423 Not this easy. Or certainly had a better difficulty curve throughout the game...in mario bros wonder even the final special world levels are often very easy. I find almost every other 2d and 3d mario harder then this...and I was rusty while playing this.

    • @jaretco6423
      @jaretco6423 10 месяцев назад

@slenderfoxx3797 Meh. Not all Mario games are exactly hard either. So I don't get why Wonder gets to be the only one that gets critique for being easy when most Mario games are. Even if it is easier, it's not really an big issue. Just as long the quality of the game is well crafted and fun, than that's all it matter.

Something you three didn't mentioned are the talking flowers.
Before the game came out. I remember reading people saying that they were going to turn the talking flowers off. But man they are actually a nice addition to the game. I chuckled a handfull if time to what they were saying. I had to turn them off for a moment and they say "Was it something I say?". That made me feel si baaaaad!!

I’m still working on my first playthrough. Haven’t even been to World 6. I’m too busy going back to previous levels to collect everything! The game is pretty easy but there’s plenty to do. It’s definitely a breath of fresh air and I wasn’t even sure I’d be in the mood for a new 2D Mario.
NSMBU earns points for being mechanically polished with fun level design. They attempted to make the world map more like SMW. The backgrounds/art are the nicest in that series. Solid all around Mario game that would be better regarded if it wasn’t the fourth of its kind.
Wonder feels fresh because it brings in brand new mechanics and was straight-up injected with the variety and weirdness of Super Mario Land 1 and 2 with a splash of Yoshi’s Island.
For all the claims that this game had zero crunch, it is surprising that they didn’t do more with the bosses. Bringing back the Koopalings would’ve been fine, but they could’ve gone a step beyond and brought in a new set of antagonists like the Broodals from Odyssey.

I think Arlo touched on a simple solution to the badge levels, I'd add that it could be as simple as just making some 10 coins impossible to reach without a specific badge, so you could come back and figure out what you needed as you go for 100%

I love the music. What music was used in the background? It's not straight VGM, I don't think. It's some nice arrangements, covers or remixes.
