Trying to think of the last time I had an 85-mile "adventure" on my GSA. Absurd. Until the range issue can be addressed, these bikes are a dead letter for anything except commuting.

I couldn’t agree more. Even my ‘easy day’ solo loop is 150mi… and it’s rural. No where for me to stop and charge even if I felt like dealing with that sort of limitation (which I don’t). This is a complete nonstarter. $24k and you’re competing with the best. BMW GS, KTM super adventure, Triumph Tiger… This is completely outclassed and over-priced.

Sounds great, every 85 miles you can hang around watching your bike devalue, whilst drinking over priced coffee and eating junk food.
    Makes a GS1250 look like a bargain.

No fuel, no oil, no maintenance, no spark plugs, no chain, no clutch, no gears, no smoke, no noise. No air intake, no air filters, no engine damage from water, sand or dust, no oil filter, no fuel filter. On the trail or city, it can go about 200 miles, very comfortable, and amazing design. Charges on any outlet. The Bosch MSC seems to be great, specially on longer trips, it does a good job of helping safety. The off-road ABS only actuates over the front wheel. For the time being, I think it is very nice.

From the top, let's just get this out of the way:
    1. It's too expensive
    2. It's too heavy
    3. It takes forever to charge.
    4. Charging infrastructure is a big problem, especially the stuff that's above snail pace.
    5. The brand requires lots of additional money past purchase to unlock "features" already in the brains.
    Now, I'll watch the review.

Apart from the spec sheet, which is a bit dreadful for 24K. Please don't advertise for Zero. They're a company who at their best are trying to trick consumers into paying monthly fees for key vehicle features, and at their worst, are trying to redefine the legal definition of property and/or the transfer of property. Zero has turned an interesting electric bike company, into a terrible anti-consumer business that is actively trying to harm their target audience.

    • @jtchivers
      @jtchivers 2 года назад +1

I can set my bike to only charge when there's enough solar power, if I want to. I'd need around 11 hours of sunshine to do it, but if I do it over a week and ride at a weekend, it's possible. On that basis, I'd get around 140 miles mixed road riding for no cost. But I don't do that. With Octopus Go (EV tariff) I can charge between 00:30 and 04:30 for 7.5p per kWh, so 140 miles would cost me a whopping £1.43.

Better review than the other I've seen, but please don't call 6kW AC charging "rapid" charging. That causes confusion. There's a strict difference in EVs between rapid (almost always DC, such as offered by Energica, with 24 kW speeds) and fast (typically 6 kW AC).
Also, this is the new platform version of the Zero DSR (my former electric bike). Didn't that qualify as the "first electric adventure motorcycle"… and the one Ewan and Charley should have taken to South America (they would have charged far more quickly on it for almost the whole journey and it was already set up for off-road work)?

Isn't it time journalists stopped this sort of nonsense. This is not an adventure bike just because it looks like one. The only adventure is trying to find a working fast charger not already in use.
I followed Bruce Smart's attempt at riding another electric 'adventure' bike around the UK.Charging wasn't as cheap as you would think but it was the sheer impractical nature of trying to do any distance. The stress of finding a working charger. The money spent on coffee while hanging around!

Never going to have to pay for fuel? From October the 18kw/h battery will cost £9 to charge at home and probably £15 on a public charger. That's about the same as it'd cost to run a GS for 90-100 miles.

    • @FlyingFun.
      @FlyingFun. 2 года назад +1

Yeah the saving is there at home charging but not much and let's face it if you are going on a proper adventure ride most of the charging will be public chargers so would cost MORE than petrol.
This bike is a joke, electric will only ever make sense once we can produce cheap clean electricity in the quantity needed and let's not forget those batteries WILL lose capacity with use and time.

I purchased a 2017 Zero DSR with Charge Tank. I was waiting for the DSR/X and also looked at the Energica Experia with DC fast charging. My experience here in the San Francisco area with level 2 EVSE charging as well as learning about the realities of the DC to DC chargers (not including Tesla Supercharging) put me off from 2-wheel EVs for now. I compared the price of both the DSR/X and Experia to a Ducati Multistrada V4S and for me, there was no comparison. So I went back to gas, purchasing the MSV4S. Traded in my DSR. I hope that one day the infrastructure can support 2 wheel EVs, but at this point in time, I found it lacking, even here in California. Yep, I have to pay for gas, oil, filters, etc now. I miss the silence of my Zero. But like all things in life, compromise is part of the deal. Adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, semi-active suspension, Brembo Stylema brakes, heated seats and grips, keyless ignition, and included panniers balanced out the things I didn't have to pay for on my Zero.
I do hope to return to electric at some point in my life. But for me at this time in life, freedom is the most important aspect of riding for me.

There are two issues that would make me never consider this bike (or any other current electric motorcycle that’s available now):
    1. Range. Such a low range is a non-starter for me. An ADV, sport tourer, tourer, or even sport bike should have a range of at least 200 miles. There are many places that I would want to ride to, where finding (and waiting for) an EV charger would be challenging. Sure, maybe my Streetfighter can’t go 200 miles on a tank of gas (my Multistrada can though), but I can easily stop for gas and be back on the road in 3 minutes.
2: Through technological advancements, range will be less of an issue (and the battery weight that goes along with that). However, the lack of sound/engine noise/exhaust note is something that’s more concerning to me. I have been in many situations where the sound of my engine/exhaust made drivers aware of my presence, as they had their eyes off of the road, weren’t looking in their mirrors, or weren’t paying attention. A bike doesn’t have to be obnoxiously loud, but sounds created by most motorcycles can make the difference between getting home safely, or riding home in an ambulance or the back of a truck. I think this is an increasingly dangerous issue, as cars are becoming less reliant on drivers to pay attention, which could lead to more accidents.

    Couple of points:
1 - this isn't the "first" electric ADV bike, Energica already has an ADV.
2 - an electric ADV doesn't seem to make much sense to me. Although I'm more of a sport touring rider, a good day in the saddle can easily be 500 miles / 800 km, or more.
3 - my weekend fun rides in the mountains are usually around 250 miles / 400 km
4 - which leaves the around town trips and the commute as the feasible options for this bike, but than I'd rather have an electric (maxi-)scooter at maybe half the price.

Sorry but this bike is a joke , no one in their right mind is going to pay £24k for an adventure bike that does 85 miles.
I had a yamaha virago that did 90 to 100 miles on a tank, only took 2 minutes to fill up but long rides were frustrating having to think about where the next fill up would be all the time.

It's a great machine but Zero made a strategic mistake going for ADV. ADV's are about multi-surface long- range travel - this bike's range and the current charging infrastructure renders it incapable for its core mission. Had they gone for naked - say with a track-day focus where ride times/ranges are much lower and performance is more important, maybe it could work. This is marketing guys wagging the dog, not riders.

I've had an Energica EVA Ribelle since April this year. 5,300 miles on that already and I work from home. To be fair, 2,000 miles of those were over around 4 days' riding (850 in one stint from Land's End to John o'Groats in April), so electric motorbikes will certainly get you to places. Will they get you there as fast as petrol? Nope. But they'll do it for much less money and believe me, sometimes it's worth stopping to smell the flowers (instead of the exhaust fumes).

  • @icklepob88

As said, a more in depth review than seen elsewhere, especially the negative side of the product.
Its definitely underspecced for the price and the range is pitiful. Adventure bikes are mile munchers, anywhere. For me, a trip round north Wales would be precharged, head into Wales via motorway, stop for at least an hour to recharge before setting off for another battery busting 100 miles of beautiful A roads, another charge, another 100 miles, and then another charge for the last motorway leg home. Then charge before next use. Would I use off road, yeah, definitely, light green lanes are plentiful.
As for the offset of purchase price vs not paying for fuel over the long run of ownership, electric ain't free, and it's always suggested 'have a coffee whilst charging'. Has anyone seen the price of coffeeshop brews ? My 3 charge trip, electric and coffee alone would soon add up to petrol prices so would take considerably longer to recoup the investment back.
I think they're brave making the adventure bike style, but it's just nowhere near a comparable petrol adventure bike yet. This is definitely a "down the bike meet cock waving bike" rather then the advertised adventure machine.
And the company is getting slated too, which itself would question me considering buying any product from them.

So that would be €28k, it is quite a hefty price! So except for Chris I am not sure anyone sensible will go with this in the Australian outback and take the risk of slamming it down. Yeah... is Chris sensible?
As a consumer and considering the way I (ab)use my SuperAdventure S even without going in the dirt, it would be a real step back as I could only use it for my commute and limite trips to my backyard in Brittany on the weekend.
Nevertheless let's imagine my wallet is deep enough and I can convince my best half this is a great evolution (really less CO2 as we mainly use nuclear power plants here in France).
    - Surely I would need to adapt the way I organise my trips to have charger along the way: clearly possible today, it would just take more time and maybe less highways so why not.
    - But I should also have to make sure that I am not going to far away from an electric plug: goodbye Morroco or Corsica. Even "Grandes Alpes" might be an ordeal. Ah, it would again be possible to go in Austria without infringing noise regulations but it is a very limited advantage, isn't it?
Yet a longer range or a faster charge might well be a tipping point. Electric motorcycles seem more and more interesting, I'll keep my KTM for a few years and look forward for next gen.

    1. The range of 185kms for me is more than enough.
    2. The normal socket charging time of 10 hours is a bit of a bummer. Make it 4-6 hours using a normal household socket and that will be acceptable for me. How? Maybe use a smaller motor with only 70HP equivalent power which is more than enough for legal speeds. That means they can save weight and cost or they can use the saved cost to make a better charging system than can charge faster using the normal household socket. I'm saying don't chase HP and Torque because I know from experience that 50HP and 30 pound-feet of torque is more than capable to move a combined weight of 300kgs bike and rider.
    3. The price, that's a shot-in-the-moon for most riders. Yes in the long run I would not have to spend money on fuel but I believe there are ways to make an electric motorcycle cheaper and completely usable for the general riding public.

A cheap EVSE can address that second point. They typically charge at 2,3kW from a normal household socket, which would fill it up in about 4-6 hours. You could also install a 22kW charger for electric vehicles, but that probably doesn't make much sense if you don't also have an electric car. The cheap EVSE can also work together with the onboard charger if you plug it into another socket, making it charge at 3,5kW. That takes the timne to 3-4 hours.

@@BartCrijns Thanks for the nice info. Well, I hope this kind of tech reaches my country soon because I am really interested in not visiting gasoline stations anymore for the rest of my riding years.

"Economic" doesn't really come to mind when looking at the price tag. How much petrol and services do you need to skip in order to have a breakeven? Nevermind the better E-Bikes that will come out in these years, with better range and lower prices. Electric is the future and a great companion for travel (easier to find a plug in remote areas than petrol) but Zero are kinda ruining it with their price and practices...

I disagree, I don't personally think this bike is that big of a deal, just a zero with new clothes n modes, I'd love to go 'leccy' but that range is rubbish and in my opinion, that is the MAIN thing producers of electric vehicles SHOULD be focussing on.

We all know that things can only improve once the big four get involved. Untill then Zero are trying there best, but there a bit shit tbh🤣 Far too expensive, unlockable extras you get charged for, and shite range. Seriously can't understand anyone that would buy one? Wait for the Japanese to come to the party, and then see what happens to Zero 👍

Real world touring range is still not there and will it ever be. 🤔 also £24k is steep still! There are reasons main stream bike companies aren’t manufacturing yet! 🫤
