@@amyeastman8764 you can’t blame her mom at all. If she didn’t say anything to her mother how would’ve she known? My daughter doesn’t always want to go to her dads house some weekends but that doesn’t mean he’s hurting her she just simply wanted to stay home and in her own room.
Honestly I wanted to smack the judge that told me my kids had to see their father. After hearing the older boys wanted nothing to do with him and that their father was abusive I still had to let him see my daughters. After I found out they were all sleeping in the same bed and he was not adhering to the order that he was supposed to be with his sister or father while they visited I never aloud him to see them again. Court order my butt. As a result of being forced to let him see my daughters they were both sexualy molested by him before I stopped visits. Judges round here don't care.
We’re doing a POOR job in America protecting these kids. A POOR job. We need to go back in time where a guy like this wouldn’t make it to court. This is inexcusable, period.
He’s gonna have a terrible time on death row, at least. Inmates don’t take kindly to kid fiddlers and will make the rest of his life a living hell.

That’s what I thought. 15 is old enough to decide for herself if she wants to go or not. I like in Australia and after 12 it’s up to the child if they want to visit their parent, nobody can force them

I agree. I stayed home alone since I was 12 whenever my mom went to work at 8pm. I was taught to never open the door for anybody and never leave the house on my own. I know many may not agree to do this with your kid but that's why my mom made sure I was disciplined enough to handle myself at the house. She left prepared food in the fridge always and asked our next-door neighbor who was an older lady named Kim to watch over me from her home in case anybody knocked on the door or in case she heard something coming from our apartment.
I wish it was 12 here. I have a 14-year-old that doesn’t want to go and we have to let her visit her father or it is violating his parental rights. Of course her reasoning for not wanting to go or much different. She’d rather just stay home and either hang out in her room or hang out with friends. It’s just never quite the easy alternative that we from the outside can make the assumption. It’s obvious if he didn’t do it this weekend, he would’ve another weekend.
Probably because her mother was so into church. Those people seem to only worry about church and not much else

Zaria Burgess was my best friend and that night she called me and asked if she could come over but we couldn’t because we had a wedding rehearsal to go to the next morning. I’ve had so many regrets and blamed my self for years. I think about it everyday if she would have came over that night she probably would be still alive. She was the best person to have in your life. But she never would tell me or our other friends anything and when Josh would pick us up from the movies or the mall it was like nothing was wrong between them 😭 but the only thing I thought was very weird was he asked us if we wanted to smoke with him but we denied and he would just look at all of us and start laughing. I cant believe that I was in the same car as him or even have given that horrible man a hand shake. I miss my Zaria 🥺💗 and I can’t wait to be able to be with her again one day.

Im not blaming the mother but if my young daughter told me that she felt uncomfortable around her father I would not have allowed her to spend time with him alone...The mother knew he had a anger problem and drug issues..
The only one that matters in this case is Zaria and she has transitioned. The mother is as responsible as the father. She ignored her daughter and put her dance ahead of her daughter's needs. I'm sure hindsight is a bitch, but the beginning of healing may have a lot to do with taking 100% for our mistakes--sadly, this was a HUGE mistake.

I had a judge tell me that, unless my son’s father is sexually abusing my son, he will not take away his visitation rights.
This is after this man violated protection orders, was physically violent toward my son and had another violent situation with my son the first time he stayed at his house after we moved away.
The court system does not care about a child’s physical or mental health. It’s disgusting.
I hope the monster in this story gets every bit of prison justice coming to him.

The second my kids balked at going to their dad's and confessed that they were scared after describing some very serious and violent episodes with their father, I made their emotional and physical safety a priority even though it angered their dad. I know not everyone can do that but to this day I'm glad I listened to my kids. They are adults and they are still estranged from their dad and I'm 100% sure that they didn't tell me everything 😔
I should have skipped this one. Obviously I survived my childhood but my father sexually abused me during visitation and as I was watching this I could feel exactly what was coming. My heart hurts 💔

I'm glad you were able to protect your kids. It's so difficult when courts order that the other parent has to have shared custody. If you go against court orders, you might go down for kidnapping and lose your children forever, and they automatically go to the other parent full time. Courts don't always make the decision that's best for the children, even when they know there was DV in the relationship. I'm happy that you were able to protect your children.

I am so sorry this happened, but you did a great job. You easily could’ve put yourself in harms way of a violent ex by doing that, but you put your children first. Amazing.
He probably put her on display to showcase his actions. He is proud of himself and wanted to show off his twisted accomplishments. He didn't want anyone to have her, he wanted to be the first. Who knows what this monster was thinking really. This one is highly disturbing, cannot fathom how poor Zaria felt when she realised her own father was hurting her and about to kill her. RIP sweet girl.

Showcase is the right word. Many men feel they need to have expensive cars, watches, etc. to show how successful they are. Proving their manhood through display of their wealth. He may have seen her purity and virginity as the "prize" and wanted to show off that he was the one who claimed it. The whole thing is sickening. I hope she rests in peace 🕊
Re why he displayed her. I think it was revenge, that he was angry at her for "forcing him" to feel this way, for "ruining his life". He had the "best 48 hours of his life 🤢" but knew it had to end, so he was angry and wanted everyone to know that HE got there first... sickening.

@@reggiezombie it reminded me of my own self as a kid. Someone commented to my parents I was loosing weight and looking bad but I knew what was happening. Yet I didn’t say, i didn’t even think it was something I was allowed to bring up and now as an adult I am thinking why didn’t I??
I just wish we could teach kids to be able to share the dangers of being around an abusive adult. Teach them to be brave… maybe at school? I dunno… since we can’t rely on emotionally unstable parents to do it.

Having read quite a few books on profiling and also having a degree in clinical psychology I think him displaying her body was like displaying a trophy. He did what he wanted, claimed her innocence and her life and the display was almost like displaying a medal after you won imo. He wanted to let people know what he did because he was proud for carrying out the plan of claiming this poor child. No one else could have her after that anyway so there isn't really any conflict in his sick mind. This is just so disturbing:(

I think the fact that Zaria didn’t want to go with her father and that he couldn’t get off of meth was enough for her mother to try and go for supervised visits at the VERY least…she shouldn’t have ever been forced to go to his house, this poor girl was failed by both of her parents.

His reason was all in his statement, "lust and control". The reason he showed so much anger in killing her and displaying her so disrespectfully. She rejected him... Because he was HER DAD. To everyone’s knowledge, she was a teenager who wanted to hangout with her friends in her primary neighborhood instead of goin to dads, something that is very common.
There is no way for them to have known what was going on and while y’all continue to victim blame, I want y’all to remember the dozens of cases you’ve heard where kids are forced to abide by the parental custody agreement. Even if her mom wanted her to stay home, there was nothing legally in place allowing that and nothing stopping him from coming to get her anyway bc he had shared custody.

Parents , if your children are scared of going to their mom or dads house, and they have increasingly bad outburst, don’t force them to go spend time with them.
That moms church dance group wasn’t more important than her daughters life. A dance group like that is such a stupid thing to tell your daughter she can’t stay with you despite being scared. 15 is old enough to stay a night by herself or at a friends house if it keeps her feeling safe!

Unfortunately that's not always how it works. I understand the circumstances in this case are a little different, but if there is a court order over custody then you don't really have much of a choice but make your child go unless you want to be arrested or possibly some other consequences for her keeping your child from their other parent. This is in place so that parents can't keep their child from a parent who wants to see them, unfortunately this doesn't always help the child when there are bad circumstances. So talking to all parents like that isn't a fair thing to do. I know plenty of divorced moms who hate making their child go to their ex's house when they don't want to go, but have to do so because of a court order. It literally tears them up

My mother used to always tell us that someone elses comfort or joy shouldn’t come at the cost of others so if we feel unsafe or uncomfortable that’s all that matters . She would always ask us how we felt or if we are comfortable with someone and if we weren’t we didn’t go and that person was no longer allowed to be around us , she sacrificed a lot of relationships with ppl who turned out to be awful ppl .

My parents never said any of this stuff to me. Lots of my dads friends would look at me funny and make me really uncomfortable.
When I told my mom what her bf did to me she kinda got mad at me and asked me why I didn’t tell her before but I guess I didn’t know how. Eventually I called the cops on him for getting in an argument with me and my mom wanted him out of the house. I almost told the cops about what he did to me when I was younger but I figured they wouldn’t do anything.

I believe he displayed her that way as a trophy. He overpowered her, took her for himself, and had total control even over her last breath. It's a way to show everybody else that "he won" and he's very proud of it. Now, no one else can have her. Just my thought.

I wonder if he chose to do it when she was 15 because her mom was 15 when he got her pregnant? I think he wanted to "get to her" before she had a chance to lose her virginity and, he is an evil monster. It is truly scary how people can hide who they really are for so long.

Cases like this sit so heavy on my heart. It’s just a reminder of how unfair it all is. That baby faced the worst things you can possible experience and a life sentence nor the death penalty could never even come close to paying for what she went through.
I wish we started giving people who do stuff like this a taste of their own medicine, every action they did should be set upon them, so they know how their victims felt.

This is so disturbing. She didn’t return his feelings and probably told him so and he just had to humiliate her like that. He is beyond sick. I don’t even want to think what her last moments was like. To think this was her own dad doing these horrible things to her. He is a monster.

It's like he probably thought she would probably end up falling in love around that time too and he would "lose her" or maybe he had some sick fantasy seeing as that was the age he and her mother had Zaria idk...I just think there might be a correlation.
I was thinking the same thing. She was his possession and as he confessed, he was fantasizing about violating her, for a long time. After, all he did to her, in those excruciating 24 hours, he added further insult, by displaying her in a humiliating manner, to objectify her and also to shock the Police and authorities, adding more victims with secondly trauma. I'm only shocked that he actually turned himself into the Police and was truthful in his Confession. He most definitely deserves the Sentence he received. 😢😢😢
My sister asked me this while I SOBBED to get through “The Child Called It”. Knowing I lived through many of the same horrors for 8 years of my childhood, and some different horrors, she asked me “why are you making yourself read that?” I told her that there was something that made me feel like this child deserved to be acknowledged. That no matter how distressing and disturbing, I would make the time and effort to listen to other’s stories and give it my love, my time and the acknowledgment they deserve. I hope one day the same happens for me. ♥️ I love your channel and the awareness you provide to the victims and survivors who overcome the unthinkable.
This is the same reason I love true crime. I think about the victims every time and am always thankful I survived my abuse... I want to acknowledge them and carry them in my heart.

I do the same! Sadly, I used to be terrible at the aftermath and would go through terrible bouts of depression when I "made myself" go through reading/watching the topics which caused me trauma but I did become self aware enough to dig myself out & identify the behavior so I could compartmentalize it better.

He didn’t cover her because she wasn’t the possession it was the sexual ownership of her. He was proud of what he did. He was obsessed with her and knew that he couldn’t keep her the way he wanted to. The fact he planned it all out is so chilling his own child
When you described his reasoning and what he did my mouth was literally wide open and tears forming in my eyes. I’ve watched hundreds of true crime videos but that …. That took the cake . Just sick.

About the display...from what forensic psychologists say about sexual sadists the act of display shows ownership after death and also can be done to shock the person who finds them as they get a sick pleasure out of that as well. It almost seems like he show signs of a serial killer as apposed to someone who snapped.

More info: Shai’Anne left behind two boys, who she gave everything to. October 17, 2019 she was found beaten to death, left in a neighborhood of Joliet, a northern suburb of Chicago, Illinois. She was horrified of her childrens father who is gang affiliated and works low level law enforcement, who described the scene of the crime, shared texts of Shai’Anne saying she was scared, and boastfully celebrated her redrum and death on Facebook the following day before it was known to the public. I have repeatedly communicated with the detectives and they have cleared him and his whereabouts, but he could have easily orchestrated it due to his affiliations. Shai’Anne was the warmest loving person I have ever met, she will always be my greatest friend, I hold and cherish that final hug every single day.
This absolutely broke my heart. I’m sure that even though their story hasn’t been told, they live on in so many ways through so many people they touched. 🤍

This is why it’s so important to listen to our kids. If they aren’t comfortable with going somewhere with someone we need to listen and talk to them about why and not force them into situations that they aren’t comfortable with.

Just "bitter, lying, moms" and "alienation" claims etc. No one cares until something like this happens. These atrocities will keep happening until we PREVENT them. This is the worst crime anyone could ever commit. Unfortunately I have a very similar father.. I ceased contact with him at 12 years old and I will never regret that, because this is something that could have happened to me. May this beautiful young girl continue to rest in peace. I’ve been waiting for more coverage of this beautiful girl’s story. This case bothered my soul on the deepest level. My own daughter is only 2 years younger than Zaria was when she was murdered and the idea of her own father doing something so heinous to her makes me ill. I know in my heart my daughter’s dad would never hurt her but if she told me he made her uncomfortable, my first first job as a parent would be to listen! How the mother didn’t see these red flags is beyond me. Parents, if your child is uncomfortable around someone, including their other parent, find out why! Your first priority is your child! Obviously she didn’t expect anything like this to happen and the guilt is squarely on the “father” but this could have been avoided. Rest in Peace, sweet girl.

If I had to guess, he was abusing her for years. As she got older he was losing control and she may have rebuffed his advances the last several times. When he realized he wasn’t going to get what he wanted from her willingly, he decided to force it. By that point he may have acted out of anger as well as extreme lust deciding to just fully follow through with all of his fantasies. That’s why he would “love” her yet display her that way. It was his anger and a punishment for her. But he said it himself with “control”. This seems like the desperate, vengeful and violent act committed by a waste of life abuser who is terrified and angered to lose the control he took for granted for so long.
He didn’t love her. He wasn’t “in love” with her. He loves only himself. I’m so sorry that this beautiful baby girl had him as a father, I’m so sorry that she had to experience that. I hope this monster wakes up and truly realizes what he’s done!

I was a young mum; we both came from broken homes ourselves.
I was SA’d by my father.
He was beat by his and left unprotected by his Mother.
He developed a love/hate relationship with his mother. She nurtured him but didn’t protect him from his fathers beatings.
The relationship he developed with his Mother eventually transferred over to me.
He hated me and loved me at the same time.
We were both incapable of healthy relationships.
We split when our youngest was a baby, but he maintained an extremely close relationship with her.
He worshipped our child.
Over many years til she was 16 he also developed a drug dependence and a codependent relationship with our daughter, refusing all other companionship and insisting she was all he needed in his life.
Looking back, it was evident. I just didn’t see the signs for what they were until hindsight.
He loved everything about her that he had loved in me as young kids.
But he also hated the things he’d hated in me that reminded him of his own mother.
The conflict between them came to a head last summer together when she was 16.
She reached the age that she wished for some independence/privacy from him.
Resentment began to build between them.
She would lash out at him.
He SA’d her after giving her drugs to ‘buy’ her attention.
Claims now to have no memory of it.
But I have a recording of a conversation between he and I after the assault occurred.
He mocked me.
Used our daughters trauma as a trophy to hold up to me.
The ultimate revenge really.
Hurt our baby to hurt me.
Just like this father when he splayed his child out for all to see.
That was for her Mother.
A very personal message that I’m sure only Mum understands, all too well.
Childhood trauma/mental health issues/meth.
Foul combination that led to this.
I think he displayed her that way as a way of bragging and showing the rest of the world what he was able to “enjoy” and no one else will get the chance to have her like he did. He is a sickening individual who will meet the devil and suffer the consequences of his actions for eternity. I pray that the beautiful young life that was cut way too short, rests in peace. She is in a place so much better than the world that we as humans are forced to survive among some of the monsters that live all around us.
I can’t even tell you how much guilt and regret I would feel if my best friend had called and asked if she could stay the night at my house for the weekend and I had to say no, then come to find out the following Monday, that she was horrifically murdered by her own father!! 😞 I truly hope that Zaria’s best friend does not blame herself in any kind of way for the outcome of this horrific situation. My thoughts and prayers are with Zaria’s family and friends through these hard times I hope they can all come together and support each other.

The mother was purposely ignorant to the signs. She had her own agenda, her child suffered the consequences. My oldest sister did the same thing with her daughter, my niece, we're the same age, she survived. She was left emotionally scarred, and has is 65 and still has extreme anger issues. She is STILL working through it. There are days when it feels like yesterday for her. We've always been close. I look forward to the day when she will be whole again.

This one is so sad & heartbreaking. Sexual abuse in the family is so disgusting. He says he was in love with her but there’s a thin line between love and hate and I think that’s what ultimately made him do all of that to humiliate her. Sad to say, but his future is not going to be horrific for him. He can close his eyes and relive that 48 hours in his mind over and over. The memory is his trophy so to speak. No matter what happens to him, he can always closed his eyes and live out his fantasy once more in graphic detail. Plus, I'm sure he has spent and will spend a long time tweaking the memories to suit himself and his needs and desires so that it is absolutely perfect in his memory.
As much as he inflicted pain and torture and misery, he will not suffer the same. To truly make him miserable, he would have to have electroshock therapy destroy his memory. And since that falls under "cruel and unusual", Zaria will never get Justice for what he did to her.

The victims always seemed to get lost in these cases. Every day you hear about so many horrific things that go on. The murder and abuse of children is always gut retching.
A parent is supposed to be your guardian/ protector.

I listen to true crime everyday while at work. As I’ve comment before, my mother was the victims of a murder recently & I hope you cover her case as well, Jamie fowler. So when we look at his mugshot it’s kind of a guessing game as to what’s going on with him because he clearly looks like he could be on drugs, have a major mental illness, or both. It definitely portrays evil. It’s horrific to try and even imagine the kind of horror and suffering his poor daughter endured and what was going through her mind while her own dad was doing these sadistic things to her. I’m wondering if ANYONE heard her cry for help and if so why didn’t they do anything? That animal deserves to suffer the same torture and humiliation that he committed against his child! We can only hope that other inmates might get the opportunity somehow to give him a taste of his own medicine. And if he survives that, with any luck, once the death penalty is carried out it will be accidentally botched so he suffers greatly during the process. Then he can burn in hell for eternity. We are taught that God forgives. It’s a good thing I’m not God because I would not show him an ounce of mercy. I would do o to him as he did to his daughter then hand him over to the devil.
I don’t usually support the death penalty but in this case, how could you not? The only upsetting thing is how long it will take to be carried out because he’s absolutely reliving “the best 48 hrs of his life” over and over again in his head and he shouldn’t have the opportunity to continuously derive pleasure from those memories.
My thoughts are that he was proud of what he did. After he took what he wanted from his daughter during “the best 48 hours of his life” to be known. After he did what he did and then killed her….she became nothing to him. It was done and he wanted to shock and disturb anyone who witnessed that horror. That control is, I think, his trophy. No one can take that from him, even incarcerated. It’s disgusting and horrible. What a garbage HE is!! Thanks for the excellent coverage and the work and compassion you put I I it ♥️
My heart just aches hearing what happened to this child. I would give my life for my two daughters. I would NEVER, EVER dream of causing them pain. I would rip someone to shreds with my hands to protect them. I hope the inmates get real justice for Zaria. This monster deserves whatever comes his way. Zaria was just a little girl in my eyes. My heart is broken for her.

Your cases are always hard to listen to, not because of you but just the respect you pay and the honest coverage you give always allows the victims to weigh heavy on my mind. Even though it's a hard listen I always feel glad that I did. As a victim myself I think it's so important to engage with other victims stories. Sending love and strength to all the people affected by this case.
I remember hearing about this when it first happened. So sick & sad. I can't even fathom what this poor girl endured. Unfortunately theres too many people in this world that don't deserve children.
I'm angry at her mom! Not blaming her for what happened, but She seemed like she was too busy. You're a mom first above everything! She couldn't bring her along? She must have missed many signs and/or conversations! To know her own daughter was begging to have her pick her up and then this happened, hopefully it made her a better mom for her son.

Stop trying to blame the mom when it was the dad who did this. Pretty sure that mom never thought it was because he was a monster and that’s she was simply a teenager and didn’t want to go over there. Most teenagers get like that and it doesn’t mean the other parent was hurting them.

@@whitneyrich6525 first of all I said I was angry at her for seemingly missing signs. I've raised 4 boys I'm fully aware of teenage attitudes. I realize no one is perfect. We all have moments where we wish we could rewrite part of our story. I Wasn't blaming her for what happened by the hands of this scumbag...I'm angry because this mother was obviously too busy doing her own life and missed opportunities to be aware. I'm positive there were signs along the way. Especially since the girl confided in friends about his anger issues. She was already scared. Her mom wasn't listening.

Feel terrible for her mom but also wondering what type of relationship they had that Zaria didn’t feel she can openly tell her mom how she felt since it sounds like she was sensing a bad spirit from her dad. Just terribly sad!
He exposed her in the end because she fought him. She said no! She denied him. And that was his last ,final punishment to her. That's just my opinion.

This case is so horrifically sad. It just goes to show you never really KNOW anyone. Even those you should be able to trust implicitly. I hope he gets the same treatment he forced on his innocent daughter everyday in prison for the rest of his miserable life.
