Hey Ms Diamond. Since a single sentence can express different feelings and attitudes depending on the word that receives the stress whether the word is content or structured, I would be very grateful if you could expand on it with more examples shifting the stress and explain the feelings and attitudes related. Thanks.
Thank you Jill for your passion and insights. Though, I'd like to know because I've learned in other textbooks that when it comes to statements (affirmative sentences) pitch should be descending in the end (the only time, the pitch is ascending is when it's a an open question). Nevertheless, here you advise to get higher in pitch in the end. can you explain? thank you
First we go up on the focus word and then descend. So you are correct that affirmative sentences should end downward, but you have to emphasize the focus word first and it usually is near or at the end.Hope that helps Fahad and thanks for watching.
Dear Ms.Jill, Thank you for your all useful lessons, they improve my speaking skill so much. But i just have one question in this lesson. It's about Wh-Question : "What time is the meeting on curriculum development?" I think it should have been "falling pitch" in word "development" as a lesson Intonation you taught. So why your student said it in "Raising pitch" and you say it's right and perfect?
Dear Jill, I am writing you from the country that, it could be, you have never heard for, but isn't that part brilliant? With your knowledge and extraterrestrial teaching skills you are leaving an unforgettable impression about yourself and your job, i dare to say, all over the world. There is no word, nor the sentence, which would be enough to describe my thankfulness and gratefulness to you. It would make me enormous happy if there is any way how we can exchange a couple of personal messages, since there is a couple of things, regarding to my English language, that i would like to ask you. Maybe you could make a lesson about that later, who knows, its about diction and pronunciation. Kind regards
Dear Ms. Jill, Thank you for your very helpful videos. I just have a question about the MEANING of "FOCUS WORD": Is "FOCUS WORD" the last content word of a THOUGHT GROUP (THOUGHT CHUNKING) *OR* a SENTENCE? So, which of the following way is the correct way? 1) They hardly notice the time / when they work in *TEAMS. (TEAMS* = FOCUS WORD) 2) They hardly notice the *TIME* / when they work in *TEAMS. (TIME, TEAMS* = FOCUS WORDS) I am looking forward to your reply,
When you read a book or a text, you can decide..let's say easier the focus words..but when you are not a native and you speak real time and fast in a conversation, you have to think all the time which content word you have to stress more,or which one of them is a focus word, and you end up either stressing everything or you stress wherever just not to sound flat or sound more like american. Is there any tip for realtime speaking? i know practice and practice and experience..i mean a tip to gain that experience faster, apart from practicing all the time..cause again even when i practice all the time, i don't know if i stress and emphasize the correct focus words, or if i stress more than the necessary ones...so you have to have a native speaker next to you all the time to confirm that you are stressing right. i am so close to the american accent..and when i start talking, i am thinking which focus word i have to stress the whole time..even when i listen to youtube dialogues, some people choose to stress adverbs more, others the verbs more,or adjectives more..so as i have understood there is not only one correct way to say/stress a line with an american accent...right? as en example in ur line "they hardly notice time when they work in teams" teams is the focus word..but someone else could stress more the work "hardly" depending what you want to say..they hardly and not easily..so again its another rule now for the same phrase.and you can apply the same for every word in the same phrase depending what you want to emphasize..choosing in real time what you want to emphasize is the problem for me...i know it has to be logical but with a new accent sometimes it isn't. too much information you know what i mean..and a last ex.notice how you say at the endof the video 14.05 "you really gonna grab the audience" you don't stress the word audience even if this is the last content word of your sentence/statement..right? so i realized that when we read a text we stress differently or we sound different that when we speak in a normal conversation..thank you
Remember there is a rule that says after a subject is introduced it can be any word in the phrase or sentence that is the focus word. So, in the example of grab the audience, the subject has been on the table and then any word becomes available to stress. Another thing I'd like to mention so that you feel good about reading out loud is that the more you read and practice stress, the more flexible you will become while you speak spontaneously. So, even though you have to think all the time when you speak, the reading exercise does influence your ability to get stronger at impromptu speaking. Thanks for your comments! Very insightful.
Thank you Prof. Jill, you are beautiful. I think these topics are very important as they are not approached regularly in English classes and because they are not easy to learn or put in practice. Could we have small assignments that help us to grab these concepts? Could you tell us if there is an order to watch all your videos? Could we see in your videos a non native speaker improves his/her speech after your classes? notice that in this last question I did my gliding.
Idel Fernandez I like your suggestion for assignments. I am going to work on some videos that include that. Also, I'll think about how to incorporate more of the improvements from my learners. In the meantime, watch the Intonation Practice with Scales and Sirens for more practice with intonation. I also like to send people to www.americanrhetoric.com to find videos and text of speeches from well-known Americans. You can listen to some diverse voices by checking out some videos of George Clooney, Bill Clinton and Steve Jobs to name just a few. Try mimicking what you like. Good luck and hope you'll keep watching Idel.
Thank you very much for your time, the idea of the improvements in your learners is like the evidence we seek to be closer to a native speaker. I think it would help if there were some clear intonation rules from the basic to the advanced level, to gradually build a better speech, and based on that some type of exercises about common situations to apply and retain what was already learnt. I am really interested in this topic as I find it difficult for me. I am reviewing the rethoric website, thank you again.
+Idel Fernandez You can start by understanding the intonation patterns of the five sentence types in English. Check out our video on the topic here ruclips.net/video/JKiXOdoqEvU/видео.html
I like the way her teach, she is very good, I'm glad I found her channel However my advise is tro try to show the blackbord more often. I think the person is filming need to be a better job, thanks for the lessons.
Thanks for this great video! I have a question, though, what's the focus word in a negative question? like, can't you speak english? haven't you bought the tickets? Thanks!
+Evan Wu In those two cases it would be English and tickets. When they are closed questions like that, it tends to be the last content word and this case it is those two. Remember to keep the intonation up at the very end too!
+Accent Ace Thanks, but sometimes I heard people putting most stress/focus on can't and haven't, these two words have the highest pitch, so I'm confused. So you're saying that english and tickets should have the highest pitch and the intonation goes up after english and tickets?
+Evan Wu Context is so important when talking about intonation. There are times that the auxiliary can't or haven't might get stressed, but if it is a standard statement or question, we wouldn't emphasize the auxiliary.
We do emphasize people's names and nouns. We don't generally emphasize pronouns Mai. Regarding descriptive phrases, it depends. Feel free to give me an example. Thanks for watching! Jill
Jill, thanks for your reply. I means Proper Nouns not pronouns, such as Fifth Avenue ,zinc oxide, which one word should accept stress, the other one need stress slight or no ? The descriptive phrases: a gray hound an old key a nice watch a sharp knife I have something else need your help. when we meet following patterns, what should we do adj/adv+adj thank you very much!
I like to call it native-like fluency. With enough practice, you can get close. But I don't like to suggest elimination ever. Plus, it is super hard. Thanks for writing Frank.
I am confused. .... "Diffcult Decision" is a focus thought group (as adjective-noun).. so the focus word should the "DIFFUCULT" and it sounds more natural to ear. Am I wrong?
doesn´t this work exactly the same in ALL languages, or at least, in all indo-european languages? you can probably translate from let's say portuguese to english and keep the same words emphasized.
Some languages are stress-timed and others syllable-timed. That is the biggest difference with regards to emphasis. This is an interesting explanation esl.fis.edu/grammar/langdiff/portuguese.htm. Thanks for your comment Roger.
She teaches in a very complicated unnecessary way. People should learn a foreign language like a child does. Does a child learn a language in a complicated way? No.
I don't totally agree with you, but I get what you mean. What she is trying to teach the guy is extremely difficult for adults to learn. It's like trying to change "the musicality" of one's speech. A native English speaking child learns that from an early age and that is reinforced every single day by his or her interactions with other native speakers. That's why me, as a non-native, I do believe that we should try to improve the way we speak, perhaps soften our thick accents, yet getting rid of them and speaking like a native born ..... simply not realistic. Yet, I think that we should try.
This would be great video if there is not that student and i would not have to waste my time to listen to his trying....but gave thumb up because you Jill are an amazing teacher anyway! I love your lessons! Thank you so much!

Thank you so much for the compliment because I study so much with English because it has been a repeat subject for me for way to many years but I don let that get in the way I just keep focusing on all that strengthens my ability to learn and your channel is one that provides me strength to an area of goals and when I achieve 8n the most required part of English , I then plane to attempt at the part of English that enhance the professional parts of communication which I believe your teachings provide too
It's such a pleasure to have received a comment from you and that made my day too and as I try to say earlier in this chat of communication . My focus is the required in sentence structure and it's been alit of studying but I just keep learning part time that is only for reasons of my health only allowing no more than part time study but I waste none of those study hours and I do plane to continue to watch your videos to keep the punctuation and ways to stress certain words because I never know but I don't want to get side teach of learning those not easy sentences and cohesion with writing plus the many required books to read along with all of subjects so i focus on comprehension in reading to try and win innmost subjects so I can reach the speech goals in these videos
And I also would like to say Happy 2023 ! To you too and all those that have the advanced opportunity to learn with you and from you their learning are more than they might realize and happy for them but I gotta focus on these sentences and reading comprehension and tend to chat threwout the year or watch your videos too
Just focusing on reading , writing and grammar structure and after that I am gonna be trying to be like students who learn from you and all you teach in words , your teachings are amazing
Thank you , and chat to learn from video inbetween my scheadule learning again Thank you ! 😊

Amazing! Where do you teach? You are a team?
@@JillDiamond we’re based in London! hi teacher
thank u for these amazing lessons but I need to read what u wrote in the whiteborad
thank u very much
I always knew you'd be a President.
Love @.
Hey Ms Diamond. Since a single sentence can express different feelings and attitudes depending on the word that receives the stress whether the word is content or structured, I would be very grateful if you could expand on it with more examples shifting the stress and explain the feelings and attitudes related. Thanks.
This is a great idea @Mbuyi Dianda. I will put it on my list for my upcoming recordings!
Accent Ace Thanks Jill! You're such a heaven in this troubled world. Greetings from Comoros
Jill you are an excellent teacher! Love the clarity on your voice and the way you explain everything. Keep up the great work!
You are a gifted TEACHER,
Please carry on!!
So helpful@@@
thanx alot for your efforts ,you are amazing teacher
You are very welcome.
Thank you so much!
Great videos. For Emphasis#5 What if you are emphasizing for a question towards a specific 2nd person?Like in "why , do YOOOUUU?"
Dear Ms.Jill,
Thank you for your all useful lessons, they improve my speaking skill so much. But i just have one question in this lesson. It's about Wh-Question : "What time is the meeting on curriculum development?" I think it should have been "falling pitch" in word "development" as a lesson Intonation you taught. So why your student said it in "Raising pitch" and you say it's right and perfect?
Thank you sooo much
very very good!
You are really great
on just saw the content in the vedio , me imphasised to subscribed it.
Dear Jill,
I am writing you from the country that, it could be, you have never heard for, but isn't that part brilliant? With your knowledge and extraterrestrial teaching skills you are leaving an unforgettable impression about yourself and your job, i dare to say, all over the world. There is no word, nor the sentence, which would be enough to describe my thankfulness and gratefulness to you.
It would make me enormous happy if there is any way how we can exchange a couple of personal messages, since there is a couple of things, regarding to my English language, that i would like to ask you. Maybe you could make a lesson about that later, who knows, its about diction and pronunciation. Kind regards
Thank you Edin. Very kind. Please email me at info@byjilldiamond.com and I will get back to you. Best, Jill
Dear Ms. Jill,
Thank you for your very helpful videos.
(TEAMS* = FOCUS WORD)
2) They hardly notice the *TIME* / when they work in *TEAMS. (TIME, TEAMS* = FOCUS WORDS)
I am looking forward to your reply,
congratulations!!
Hey, hey, hey, hey. Doing my best querida! Beijos.
Thanks for sharing
I hope somebody teach me like this.
you are really amazing mom jill
Exelent ❤
Accent Ace thank you very much!
Thank you very much.
Glad you watched. Hoping it is helping!
I like the way her teach, she is very good, I'm glad I found her channel

Pro teacher
There are times that the auxiliary can't or haven't might get stressed, but if it is a standard statement or question, we wouldn't emphasize the auxiliary.
she's so lovely , i love it
Should we emphasise "whatever" in sentences?
It is like the beginning of adult movie.
Jill, when we meet the PROPER NOUNS and descriptive phrase, whether need to stress all of this?
THX
We do emphasize people's names and nouns. We don't generally emphasize pronouns Mai. Regarding descriptive phrases, it depends. Feel free to give me an example. Thanks for watching! Jill
Jill,thanks for your reply.
I means Proper Nouns not pronouns, such as Fifth Avenue ,zinc oxide, which one word should accept stress, the other one need stress slight or no ?
The descriptive phrases:
a gray hound an old key a nice watch a sharp knife
I have something else need your help.
when we meet following patterns, what should we do
adj/adv+adj
thank you very much!
+mai zi We tend to stress the nouns in these phrases. a gray HOUND; an old KEY; a nice WATCH; a sharp KNIFE. Hope that helps.

It's possible to reach your level of fluency or a native fluency?
I like to call it native-like fluency. With enough practice, you can get close. But I don't like to suggest elimination ever. Plus, it is super hard. Thanks for writing Frank.
Thanks for answer, I really like your videos.
hay guys whats up
I am confused. .... "Diffcult Decision" is a focus thought group (as adjective-noun).. so the focus word should the "DIFFUCULT" and it sounds more natural to ear. Am I wrong?
I call them word partnerships and we emphasize the first noun in these types of pairs T.B. Thus, "decision" and not "difficult". I hope that helps.
Why the word "when" is constantly changing or circled.
is it a content word?
+Johan Rivera It is a content word!
doesn´t this work exactly the same in ALL languages, or at least, in all indo-european languages?
you can probably translate from let's say portuguese to english and keep the same words emphasized.
Some languages are stress-timed and others syllable-timed. That is the biggest difference with regards to emphasis. This is an interesting explanation esl.fis.edu/grammar/langdiff/portuguese.htm. Thanks for your comment Roger.
pofa eres una gaya gira de colombia para enseñar
I hated that guy
Me cae mal ese hombre
She teaches in a very complicated unnecessary way. People should learn a foreign language like a child does. Does a child learn a language in a complicated way? No.
Except the guy is not a kid but a grown man.
"public speakers know how to emphasize word"... you didn't emphasize the "word" part LOL
This would be great video if there is not that student and i would not have to waste my time to listen to his trying....but gave thumb up because you Jill are an amazing teacher anyway! I love your lessons! Thank you so much!
