  • This is footage from a GoPro mounted on the front of the locomotive. The battery died before reaching the High Falls of Cheat, but what it did record was worth while nonetheless. I took this back in 2014 during a vacation to West Virginia, and simply hadn't done anything with the footage. I figured now was as good a time to post this as any, since I haven't had the chance to film anything new, due to my new job and where I live now.

I've been on a couple cab rides out of Elkins. I wish I'd have thought of doing this! Great stuff, thanks!

Happy to share the footage, glad you liked it. I hope to do the same on a few other tourist railroads eventually, whenever I get around to it.

Where and how did you attach your GoPro? My husband just got one for his bike trips. I'd love to try this, or at Cass, before we end up moving out of the area when I retire. :)

I used a magnetic mount I found online. Honestly can't remember the name of the maker or site I found it on now. The mount is attached to the flattest surface on the nose of the engine, just above the coupler, between the ditchlights.
I have placed it on too many engines to count, it does a good job holding on to very shaky engines that buck and roll violently, not simply just at high speeds as it's rated for 130mph. I seem to recall it being fairly inexpensive, no more than $20 when I picked both of mine up in 2013.
