My perception is that self seems to be a phase in consciousness when inside the physical form. If all sentient life came from a source or super mind than it seems to me the super mind split and created multiple versions of itself so that it can be enabled to have infinite experiences through the multitude of perceptions.
@natmanprime actually the concept of "self" is human made. When people like Alexander the great would say they heard the "voice of god" it really was their conscious, but no name for it yet.

This doesn't quite explain the other physical objects in reality. Sure, it paints a pretty picture, it creates this central being, or as he puts it "anemone". But if you were to visualize the other physical objects --such as the computer in front of you-- you'd realize that everything has a "centipede" trail. The message he gives is merely an abstraction. I'd take a leap and say that all that is, especially in terms of physics, is just a continuous deterministic fluctuation of sub-particles.
