Yea, or at least in my campaigns they are LG, which is why I have the Knight class in my modified Old-School Essentials Advanced Fantasy system to cover the other alignments.
I do like the idea of an evil version, like the Blackguard that has been in several editions of the game, of the paladin. However, all paladins worship a god to obtain their abilities. If they do not, they are not a paladin.

Mostly yes but I like the blackguard idea. I’m open to holy warriors of other alignments but the player has to convince me.
Ya I’m not a fan of 5e paladins.
They should always be LG and have a deity!
