Paladins In D&D, And Roleplaying As One.
F minus, but I hate Hasbro/WotC so this grade is expected.
@RPGrandPa I may being a bit generous because they put out a functional update to 5e. Even if: -They didn't update the MM (2014 MM is compatible) -Their Marketing has been a flop. (They've been "fire and forget" on book releases for several years. Make a to-do about the new thing, release it, stop hyping it the day it hits shelves) -Their messaging to fans has been atrocious and often flat out hostile. Technically, they could have done a little worse.
Well that’s WotC. Shooting themselves in the foot again. I know they lost me awhile ago, I won’t buy their products anymore
what a 2024 rollercoaster WOTC had, they are their own worst enemy
@TheOGGMsAdventures I wouldn't even say that 5.Xe (or 2024 Edition) is bad. It's pretty much a revision of 5e for better and worse. But the 50th Anniversary marketing was a fail, as was only getting 2 of 3 core books out. And the fraud investigation of Hasbro, the no-show VTT, and the continued hate for their founders and older players.....
@ i don’t disagree
I am waiting for the “reforged” version to come out with the Foundry System to try it out.
My main table has political arguments regularly and we have card carrying members of different parties in the group. I think the two main differences are - we are Australian, and we value each other. At the table we tend to catch these early and refocus, as much as possible moving these to our chat groups for later. My point is they happen and then they are over. Occasionally this becomes entertainment as something happens which one of us predicted and they relish the moment. This should be normal behaviour. Learn to take the piss out of each other. Collectively when we then turn our eyes to the US we really don't understand what is in the water over there.
But what about all these storles about people getting better through D&D? My friend Mike Hunt had a rare mental illness called Suggantheis through severe traumatic event but he's pretty much got over it after I DMed in a campaign for three years at Likomma. But then he lost his mind and took his life last year because of his 5 million dollars scammed. I am so grateful about this and all your community service you have been doing. I just discovered your content from Morbillions of recommendations and I cannot describe how crazy you have put energy and resources to morb all these anti-scam schemes. Then that reminds me, I saw Gubayama the other day in Shibomnigee. He said to give you his best. I was a North American Fall Webworm in my past life. Those were the good old days...La-li-lu-le-lo! La-li-lu-le-lo!! La-li-lu-le-lo!!!
It's sad to think that in the USA's people can't play games with you because their politics differ. . But in the USA we can agree to disagree and trust our process.
Well said! I agree.
I'm a gay man and the only liberal in my group. It's me, one of my Jiu Jitsu buddies, his wife, and another couple. Occasionally we'll be joined by my 76-year-old hubby who has Alzheimer's when he's having a good day. We always play at my place because we have a big dining room table. Normally, we don't have issues. However, my one buddy who INSISTED we don't bring up politics CANNOT help himself. He HAS to complain about trannies every time he turns around. (By the way, I know trans people, and I NEVER hear about this stuff from Lefties. Only conservatives.) Now, I'm a liberal who despises wokeness, but I also despise how conservatives NEVER admit to the crazies in their midst. Sometimes it feels like "don't bring up politics at the table" is just a way for some people to hobble others into doing something they themselves have ZERO intention of doing.
I make it clear up front on our campaign blog - no politics, no DEI, no WOKEness, None of that silly shit goes on at our table. We are here to play a TTRPG, we don't need any of the real world stupidity in our games. If someone wants to join our group, it's because they want to play the game. PERIOD!
Ya ok I play with another person that we are polar opposites in politics but at the table we don’t discuss it. Crazy
You got your chocolate in my peanut butter. You got your politics in my RPG. That's no reason to dump a game over politics.
I continue to pay eBay prices cause I'd rather buy a ratty, dog eared copy of Greyhawk Adventures than give ONE penny to Hasbro.
@@burningphoneix Fair. WotC just gets worse and worse.
Cool
@@RIVERSRPGChannel Thank you!
Great tip and love the session recap! I just rewatched the original Magnificent Seven with my kids last night. D&D definitely takes a lot of inspiration from the Western genre, but I've been thinking on a setting that's more explicitly Western with fantasy elements.
@wereteddy Thanks! I have a hankering to use Rio Bravo at some point. IME, it's best to pick 2, maybe 3 things and mash them up. It tends to be way harder for the PCs to figure out what you're grabbing from.
Sounds like a great success
I think the answer is "yes*", but the asterisk is just as important as the answer. As you said, there are many factors that will result in the de-throning of DnD. One of those is the rise in popularity of TTRPGS that *aren't* DnD. Games like D20 are grabbing up new TTRPG fans before they ever fall victim to modern WotC, and shifting tables who have played DnD for decades. Each DC20-quality TTRPG that forms a strong community detracts from the reign of DnD. Like every cut made in a death from a thousand cuts, every loss in brand loyalty is a cut that will end in DnD's death. That is why, IMO, there is a "next" DnD killer. Some of the games killing it already exist and have taken many DnD tables with them.
It was a blast

Is a muscle car from the 1960s obsolete? For sure. Is is still cool to drive them, love them, refurbish them? Hell yeah! Same story I would say :)
The idea that adventuring or being a hero is only for the genetically gifted is nonsense. Most people would take up adventuring only out of desperation. They would be vagabonds, the disposed, the poor, and other outsiders. Second, adventuring is a dangerous profession and sooner or later your character is going to get injured or disfigured. It balances out experience and gives a natural point for a character to retire. He's too badly injured to go on. The idea that wounds do not have lasting effects, not even a scar, isn't realistic. Sure, you get a +1 to your proficiency for experience, but that's balanced by having a bad back that doesn't allow your character to run or lift heavy objects. Gold as XP. The in game economy gets broken because you can't have dragons without a dragon horde. Nobody knows why dragons need treasure or what they do with it. Characters quickly have a golf bag of magic weapons and a dump truck full of gold and all it gets them is a down payment on a retirement home (keep). The GM has to invent ways to separate characters from their treasure, and that creates unnecessary grievances. The desire for treasure warps the motivations for the game. How much is enough? Why is my cleric spending time going down holes and not preaching? Other games, where gold has a truer value, and XP isn't tied to gold, characters are more likely to be driven by factors like doing good for goodness sake, sense of community, religious fervor, etc. The abstract idea inherent in HP. If HP aren't wounds, what is my cleric healing? Is healing just a placebo? A better mechanic would be Luck as an attribute. You make a save because you're lucky. You don't step in that trap because you are lucky. You're not killed by that blow because you're lucky. It also creates an interesting dynamic in the game. The more you roll the dice, the closer you are to death because sooner or later your good luck becomes bad luck. It's why I like games with exploding dice for damage. Now wounds are actual wounds that have to be treated. Now you have to manage risk.
The rules from swords path glory
I'm absolutely amazed at the unjustified hype behind this very ordinary game. And the endless justifications of the hype AS hype, like that makes it a better game somehow. The point isn't that Kelsey is, for whatever reason, successful. The point is that people confuse that success with excellence. The two are not the same.
"Ordinary" isn't a bad term for it. It has some choices I like mechanically, but definitely lacks a few things. It has a role as a platform to build from.
@@dm_curt Can you build on it? Sure. But we already have such platforms to build on and they are objectively better and more complete, or more innovative, systems. Like ACKS or OSE. Or Crimson Dragon Slayer or Wretched. There are more innovative and interesting options. More excellent options. I feel like it is Shadowdark's deficiencies that are attractive for those who see a chance to make money improving it. But we already have the actual old-school rules to work with if that's what we want to do.
They wanted to be the next Pathfinder after the ogl was cancelled. They announced quickly, to try and seize momentum, which kind of worked, but then wotc went back on cancelling the ogl, and they were left without a plan. Other 5e clones (e.g. nimble, a5e) have fared better because they had a clear goal and while they built momentum more slowly, but haven't had the foundation of that momentum ripped from under them, and alternative systems that sprung up from the ogl scandal (e.g. daggerheart, DC20) have fared better because they took the time to establish a clear direction to take the game, allowing them to hold on to momentum after wotc changed their minds. But while kobold press' gamble didn't pay off, it appears not to have hurt them much. They had a pretty smooth transition back to the status quo.
Kelsey Dionne didn’t inherit or get anointed - she hustled, networked, and built her name and product for YEARS. Don’t care if others did or didn’t. I respect the hustle.
They can complain all they want (and will likely continue to do so). Hasn't affected the fun of my Shadowdark games any. Nor will it.

Good thoughts I haven’t played shadowdark yet but hope to this fall at conventions Like someone else said learn from her if you don’t want to be left behind
Great video. Thank you. I definitely think that Shadowdark is sucking the air out of the room for OSR. I feel like OSR really is Shadowdark now. Are their any OSRs left that anyone cares about. I don't think so.
Scott, if you actually go to a convention you’ll see that ShadowDark & Castles & Crusades are sucking the air out of 5E, or should I say “tables and seats”. ShadowDark is a perfect fit for convention play. Castles & Crusades is exploding on the organized play space at conventions. 5E, including its organized play has been surpassed by both since 2023 and now in 2024.
Shadowdark is definitely garnering the most attention in the OSR currently but there are plenty of other OSR style games that people are playing and are interested in.
I'm currently playing a game with a few people that is a blend of Swords & Wizardry and Shadowdark, so yes, other OSRs are still being played.
@@accessyourinnerlight971 I do always love a field report.
Also, not to mention some of the newer OSR games out there. "Tales of Argosa" just sent out their pdfs for their successful kickstarter. "Outcast Silver Raiders" has had a very successful launch recently (and it was nominated for four of the same categories that Shadowdark won in the Ennies) It's on my to buy list, I just don't have the 75.00 for it right now. "ACKS Imperial Edition" (second edition) also recently had a majorly successful kickstarter. I think a new Conan the Barbarian RPG is launching soon, but not sure if that's OSR. And what's great about some of these newer ones is that they are using somewhat original systems and are no longer using the D&D OGL (considering the debacle with that last/earlier this year).
Good video Curt! I think you nailed it, the people bitching about Shadowdark overshadowing other creators need to take a hard look at what Kelsey is doing and learn why she has been so successful. She seems like a genuinely nice person that just wants to create good stuff. She also has not alienated half her possible fan base by inserting whatever her personal politics are into Shadowdark. Creators really, really need to learn this lesson. I have yet to play Shadowdark but will be at the end of September at Shirecon with DM Bluddworth. I am looking forward to it.

No, that's Stormlight rpg... A bigger shark can eat another
@TheBlink182ify "Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere RPG beginning with The Stormlight Archive....." 10.8M on its Kickstarter, with 3 days to go? Huh. Be interesting if it has tabletop play in proportion to its KS backing, and isn't a shelf-sitter.
What's going to "kill" the IP momentum of D&d ? WotC (eternal growth) greed, arrogance and distance from the ground level vein of the hobby. They've already done enormous reputation damage to the brand through their antics and controversies. Akin to EA (though not on the same scale), its evermore popular to despise WotC & Hasbro. A player base shave, as they try and turn 5e into another edition, which always results in a certain % of player loss through edition preference. A piranha effect, where very similar games (Shadowdark, DC20, etc) trying to capture that same vibe & audience release with highpoint gimmicks (ex: 4pt economy) that take player chunks away from D&d. A Hasbro that tends to hold onto and vault (for DECADES) IPs that have undergone popularity crash, rather than selling those IPs and allowing them the opportunity for renewal through new party ownership. A coming roleplaying/D&d (probably a "nerd" things in general) popularity crash. Bonus : Continued civilizational destabilization throughout "the west", which will force people to spend less time and money on very optional activities & spending. Hard times tend to require you spend more time paying attention and exerting effort for the basics (ex: the number of Americans forced into "car living" is HUGE), and less time essentially goofing off. I think this will just be (in part) a reality check for a regional civilization that through its former success, decided to spend that societal momentum currency (via misallocated funds, energy and time) on becoming an enormously entertainment top-heavy society.
@teedee639 You're on a roll, and unfortunately, 100% right. Hard times are going to focus our spending money on beans, bullets and bamd-aids, over books. The Next election will not prevent this, only determine how hard and fast the fall will be.
As Hasbro continues to lose faith with the community and new systems continue to streamline games for a different meta than DnD was created in, DnD will die. I don't think there will ever be another DnD, because ttrpg's will have a healthier ecosystem. More competition with different styles of play will be good for the community and I do think DC20 will be a spearhead in that movement. DC20 is specifically designed to poach 5e's market share and that is incredibly valuable to both the system and the community.
Less offensive, but PERPLEXINGLY BAD is a superhero game I picked up for the laughs "The Blood of Heroes"
@@delcarsdungeonHeh. I'll take your word for it. "Perplexingly Bad" is not a great selling point.

Always glad to see a new vid Curt. Personally I'm a free speech advocate - if you are a disgusting human like the maker of Fatal, make it, and the rest of us will know to steer clear of your sick self; if you are THIS BAD at making games [the FATAL maker] just write your weird fiction/manifesto.
Good points all around
@DuelingDragonAdventures Thank you. I appreciate it. I may have missed a few, but hopefully they were minor or subjective.
@@dm_curt Another one to me and this may go under missing rules, is not being clear about what you're supposed to be doing as a player. An example would be Degenesis... all the coolest art and layout in the world can't save my interest in what's going on.
from a power-creep POV, i would say if you allow Planescape/Spelljammer/Dragonlance/Eberron backgrounds in 5e, it is basically the same. Also post-Tasha classes fit right in. There is just a very large power range in regular 5e, that WotC are also addresssing with their 2024 edition. It is basically a 2024 5e, before that came out.
loving playing DC20 even though its still in development and its still so much better done with DnD for good
There are a lot of conflicting stories regarding this but it does feel like something wotc would do This is what happens when you fire 90% of the staff who actually did the work
Yet these content creators keep supporting WOTC. They are slow learners, I guess.
there appears to be a lot of missing details and missing context
@lightfighter4evr We may find out more, and best-case scenario: It was an automated response on the weekend by a 3rd-party watchdog they hired, and WotC will retract it (because he's on their Nice list) Monday or Tuesday.
@@dm_curt apparently Mike (Sly) got a warning email instead of a strike and he self censored. Something wonky going on.
