First off Messi and Haaland have equal goals and assists this season. It’s Haaland’s best season ever, it’s one of Messi’s worst seasons ever, yet they’re still equal. Put that into perspective.
The award is for the “best individual player”, not the “top goal scorer from the best team”. Messi is the better player and he won the World Cup and has equal goals and assists. Haaland has a better team and still has the same tally of goals and assists.
The biggest problem in modern football is casual fans who think stats = ability. You judge the game on goals and assists and ignore everything else. You don’t see the tackles, the passing, the dribbling, the goal creation, the IQ, the ability to beat players. You don’t see 95% of the game all you do is sit there and read the goals tally and think that equals how good you are.
Haaland deserves the award there’s no debate about that. Haaland DOESN’T deserve the award more than Messi. If the ballon dor was only based on stats every year aka most goals + assists then Messi would have 10 ballon dors and CR7 would have 3. That’s why’s stats don’t rule the game

I would agree with the last guy. Messi is my goat, but, winning a treble with 50+ goals in a season, has to be up there with one of the rarest if not the rarest achievements one can have. Messi did it in 2015, won the ballon d'or and lewa did it in 2020, but, covid didn't let him win. So, doing that is definitely more rare that winning the WC. But, Messi is definitely the second best and KDB is definitely the third best this season.

Haaland went missing in both finals and against Real Madrid in UCL semi final. He is great against lower level defenders but when it went up a level he struggled. Scoring tap in’s against Wolves and Southampton ain’t going to win you the Balon d or

I totally agree with the last guy, in 2010, Xavi and Iniesta (the greatest midfielders in the history of the sport) both won the World Cup, they were key in making Spain victorious and Iniesta scored the winning goal but Messi won the Balon’dor in 2010 because he scored 47 goals across all competitions 👀… Haaland has scored 52 and won a treble in his first season, clearly that has to be enough for a player to win the B’dor.

So basically the argument for Messi winning the Ballon D'or is that he won the World Cup as well as World Cup golden ball, won Ligue 1, French Super Cup, Ligue 1 top assister, FifaBest, Laureus award, IFFHS awards, and broke career records (this is important because Haaland is only 22 and can't break career long records yet). Haaland's argument for winning Ballon D'or is that he won the treble, scored 50+ goals, won PL player of the season and Young player of the season, PL golden boot, European golden shoe, UCL top scorer, PFA player and younger player of the year, UEFA player of the year (likely to win it in August), and broke tons of seasonal records in his FIRST SEASON. So now the question is: Who deserves the Ballon D'or more? Well when you look at Messi's achievements, majority of them are because he won the world cup. If Messi didn't win World Cup and instead Mbappe did, then Messi wouldn't win golden ball cuz Mbappe would get it (scored a freaking hattrick in the final). The Laureus award was also given to Messi for winning the world cup. IFFHS best player and FifaBest we're also because Messi won the FIFA World Cup. Finally, Messi broke career records and not seasonal records. Haaland cannot break career records since he is still at the beginning of his career. Now let's talk about Haaland. Haaland is his DEBUT SEASON won nearly everything possible (minus community shield and Carabao Cup which are less important trophies). Haaland also won over a dozen individual awards. Now the thing is that even if Haaland didn't win a single team trophy, he would still win most of his individual awards. Even if Haaland didn't win UCL, PL, or FA Cup, he would still win PL player of the season thanks. This 44 g/a, he would still win European golden shoe and PL golden boot and UCL top scorer. Haaland would still win PFA Player and Young player of the year due to his breakout season. Before mentioning who I think deserves Ballon D'or more, let's talk about stats. Messi has 63 g/a this season while Haaland has 62 g/a. HOWEVER, 12 of Messi's g/a came in international friendly matches where there's nothing to play for while all of Haaland's g/a came in competitive matches. This means Messi has 51 competitive g/a while Haaland has 62 competitive g/a. After analyzing ALL of that, I would say Haaland deserves the Ballon D'or more than Messi because Haaland's individual accolades aren't heavily reliant on winning team trophies while majority of Messi's individual accolades are reliant on winning the WC. In 2010, 2014, and 2018 a World Cup winner didn't win the Ballon D'or so I don't think we should make an exception now and say "World Cup winner should automatically win Ballon D'or" just cuz THE Lionel Andres Messi won it. Haaland had THE GOAT Debut season. No other debut season can match what Haaland has achieved with Man City this season. That's why Haaland deserves to win the Ballon D'or over Messi.
