Definitely Auto Passthrough! I couldn’t get any Atmos without it
Oh nice!
I have a question to ask FOMO. Why are you reviewing a pre-production model of the r635? There’s a certain person here in the av space here on YT, ridiculing you for not having the production model. It’s nothing new for this particular person, as all he does is attack other YT, and true professional and calibrators. I stepped in, in your defense, to say maybe it’s bc this tv availability/stock is non existent right now. I’ve tried finding one, and can’t find one in stock. Also, the next availability to get one is next month. At least from BB. So, I’m just curious if this is actually the case?
@@TechnoDad I have a tcl 65r625 and there's a 9.4 update for vrr but it only mentions it for the 55r625 why would they add vrr only for 55 inch or did they make a mistake
Pass thru did the trick!
Thanks.
My head just EXPLODED ! 💥
LOL! I hope that's a good thing Chris!
Techno Dad,
That was a great how-to video!
I just recieved our TCL ROKU Series 6 a month ago.
I don't need a bunch of power or volume in the living room and since we use Sonos speakers in the home, I was thinking of trying the "Sonos ARC" Soundbar which had the Atmos reflecting speaker.
What are your thoughts?
Cheers,
Eric
awesome information on this channel! Plan on doing a Review for Vizio OLED new for this year?
Thanks Clifton! That's the plan!
Excellent video. I love it. If the 6 series has all those HDMI 2.1 elements, it is a really nice deal.
Thank you! Yes, it has all the HDMI 2.1 except for the bandwidth and support for higher resolutions.
Thanks for posting this! I’m shopping for new gear and this is confirming the choices I’ve made - TCL 6 series and a Denon 750H. Because I’m an Apple addict and will be using my AppleTV as my main streaming platform, couldn’t I just plug that directly into the AVR and not have to worry about eARC pad through?
Hey Channa D this is still one of my favorite TV's. It's so much improved with the various firmware updates it's received since the TV released.
Nice!!

Perfect this is what I wanted to know! I have an Xbox One S and I was curious if I could keep it plugged into an hdmi port and use the arc port for audio. It feels like I’d really not make use of all the capabilities of the receiver having several HDMI ports, but I want the ease of use of having the Xbox icon on my Home Screen. Now I just need to know what happens if I don’t have a full array of surround sound speakers hooked up. Currently only have 2 speakers.
I have a pole sign2 to my 5series TCL. What's the best soundbar settings to prevent audio voice latency? I have it at auto passthrough now
Thanks for a tip to change Auto detect to access (in my TV it is called like that) for HDMI protocol. Now it is always and everywhere playing good audio format. :)
Ho just got the TCL C825 mini led tv but when connected to Onkyo TZ830 monitor out to earc it say OSD not supported any idea to go around this problem.
Hey i have a TcL s5315 which is a 2019 TCL 4K Tv and i have a Dolby atmos Soundbar
So which is the best audio format option? Autopassthrough or custom and specifically choose Dolby digital plus ??
Which wld give me authetic Dolbyatmos sound ?
That did the trick - Thanks!

Question? I have a TCL R635 and a Yamaha TSR 700. When I have atmos, it says Atmos/pcm. And when I am getting a non-atmos show, it just says pcm. Is it working properly?
HI All,
I got an Sonos Arc and Xbox series x for Xmas. My question, how do connect everything to get Atmos? Should I connect the Arc to earc port and xbox to normal HDMI or Xbox to earc and sonos to hdmi or directly to the Xbox?
Any help would be truly appreciated
Could you help me? How to set this on tcl 55c835. I didnt see auto passtrough option. Thx.
So I have a Xbox one X and a JBL 9.1 soundbar. When I hook the JBL 9.1 to eARC it says I can do Dolby digital plus but shows it’s not compatible with Dolby Atmos (and yes I have the app). When I plug the Xbox directly into the JBL 9.1 it checks everything off and says I have Dolby Atmos available and ready to use. Is there something I’m missing here? If my soundbar is hooked up to eARC everything audio wise on any HDMI port should be Dolby Atmos enabled, correct? Also for HBO MAXS ‘the Batman’ my receiver goes nuts! It keeps switch being atmos and DD+ on the display? Does it do this to you on your setup? Sorry for the loaded question!
Great news brother for those tcl owners.
No doubt!
I have a Vizio, P55-F1. I cannot get HDR to work From X-box-s or Fire TV Cube. the video cut in and out, Fire TV will play sometimes but then just start cutting out. when TV inputs are set to UHD. But My HTPC will output HDR just fine RX-570, with or without Yamaha RX-583 inline. I seem to recall Vizio having HDMI problems. I did not notice this no hdr right away. I've tried a lot of TS with no luck. Why I'm looking to getting New TV. So You and Fomo get to reviewing, and W.74.
Do I have to do this if I purchase a Dolby atmos soundbar? Will the soundbar alone give me atmos ?
How do I know if my TV has ER capabilities I have a 2017 LG 75inch 3-D 4k
Thanks for all your informative videos @Techno Dad. Just purchased Sony HT g700 soundbar for a decent deal on prime day. Will I still be able to take advantage of ALLM and VRR features of this tv if I decide to connect my future PS5 to the soundbar, and connect earc ports from soundbar to TV? Or do I need to still connect console directly to this tv? Thanks man!
The soundbar would need to support those features as well to pass it along to your TV. Not sure it will do that, so I would plug the PS5 directly to the TV.
Thanks for the response, really appreciate it! Pulled the trigger on the 55, contemplating if I want to upgrade to the 65. Decisions!
Can't get sound from blu ray player (HDMI 1) to soundbar that's connected to eARC. What's going on?
I just bought a 55” TCL 635. I have no issue with arc, but I am having problems with my digital optical output port. I am attempting to stream audio and video through PLEX to an outboard PS Audio integrated amp. There is audio, but it is clipping, or having dropouts that last less than a second. I suspect the digital audio out port is defective, and I plan to return it in exchange for another unit. But I am wondering whether anyone else is having this problem.
I had it on dolby digital plus on my 5 series and it worked for three days and I was super bummed out when It wouldn't come up as dolby atmos. Thank you for making this video . It worked like a charm
Atmos is a pass through on the TCL 5-series tv’s you should be good bro
Everytime I skip intro/pause in netflix or pause in loose surround sound, i have to exit the episode and restarted any clue?
Great video
Thank you!
Again, YTM!!!! Thanks TD 👍
You're welcome!
Thanks for confirming Atmos passthrough via TrueHD. Do you know if that was also true of last year's 6 series, or this year's 5 series? Debating between these 3 sets and this is a key factor for me.
Hello Josh. This is something new and I would imagine that last year’s model did not have eARC support. I’m not 100% sure as I didn’t have last year’s model. I would imagine this year’s 5 series has it, but I haven’t checked it out.
@@TechnoDad TCL said that they would be updating some of last years tvs with earc and VRR. WHere is are update!!!!! (8 series owner here)
I’m thinking about picking up this tv and and of right now I use optical cable for my audio from the tv to my sound bar. Is it better to use the eARC to pass through the sound bar to the tv?
You will be able to get Dolby Atmos (even though it's compressed) via the HDMI ARC output from TV to soundbar.
Thanks.
Which one is a better way to connect.
Hook up your media player to the avr via HDMI , and avr to the TV for video output.
Or hookup your media player directly to the TV and use earc to send the audio signal to the avr?
Media player connected to the AVR and then AVR video output to Tv.

I don’t have a big budget for a soundbar - I would like atmos but it isn’t a requirement- I’d prefer an all in one bar - any suggestions? I have the tcl 55r635
Hi! What's your budget? Email me - technodad55 at gmail dot com.
Got my 55 R635 and super happy about it. My previous TV was 8yo 1080p panel so there is night and day between the two. I also picked up a Vizio sound bar with atmos (SB36512-F6) but I cannot for some reason get Atmos to work. Here is my connection
TCL eArc is connect to HDMI ARC on Vizio
Xbox series x is connected to another HDMI port with mode set to 2.0
Xbox settings have audio as bitstream
I am supposed to get a dolby atmos notification when the atmos source is detected but I cannot get it to work. I am pretty new to these setup so excuse me if I am doing sth obviously wrong. My suspicion is that since the sound bar doesn't support eArc, this won't work. Any suggestions?
Sounds like you're having the same issue I'm having with my TCL and Vizio soundbar, SB36514-G6. It too has Atmos, but I'm not able to set it up as shown in this video. Does your TCL detect your soundbar's capability in Audio-->Auto Passthrough as it's shown in this video @ 2:30? Mine only detects Stereo in this setting. I have to manually set the Audio to DD+, DTS. The TCL also doesn't detect the soundbar in the CEC settings. I'm wondering if TCL just has a blindspot for Vizio.
I’m just curious do you need a receiver in order to get an Atmos feed? Or can you connect a sound bar directly to the eARC on the TV and get Atmos sound?
Hello, Aaron! If the soundbar supports Atmos then it should work the same way as an AVR.
@@TechnoDad If the soundbar supports Atmos, then does the TV pass through Atmos from other HDMI inputs?
Do you recommend with this TV that I connect my Panasonic UB820 directly to the TV and let it feed back to my Marantz AV7705 via the eARC rather than hooking my UB820 to my av7705 and then have the receiver handle video and sound to the TV via eARC?
Hi Doug! Just connect the UB820 to the Marantz and Marantz to the TV.
@@TechnoDad thank you! Really dig your channel.
My TCL 6 series r635 somehow gives me the dolby atmos notification when no sound bar is connected but when I connect a new Samsung HW-B650 soundbar, I no longer get the dolby atmos notification. I think something is messed up with the TCL/Roku software or the streaming app (I have been testing Apple tv/Netflix/Prime) software.
No dolby atmos on anything yes, it's pretty frustrating.
Nvm. The soundbar, although advertised to have atmos, does not... Fml.
Hey question for you. At 9ft away in a dark room what's the better choice. 65" A8H $2,299 or a 75" 950H $2,650??
Oh man! I sit 14 ft away from my 65" OLED and it's awesome! I have the 55" A8H in for review and it's a sexy TV. I personally would go with the OLED but that depends on what content you are watching mostly.

I'm 99% sure I have everything setup correctly on my 55R635, but my Atmos audio keeps cutting in and out when using the Roku built in apps (sound via eARC to a Vizio SB46514 soundbar). Not sure if it is something wrong with the TV, the soundbar or my internet. The picture doesn't get affected which makes me think it is soundbar or TV related. Have you had any issues with with the Roku built in apps and Atmos?
Hi! It could be a few things. Maybe the soundbar can't handle a full bitstream audio signal. Try setting it to Dolby Digital+, or maybe changing out the HDMI cable to something shorter or "higher quality." Other than that, I'm not 100% what else it could be.
@@TechnoDad Thanks for the quick reply and suggestions! I've tried Dolby Digital+ and a couple of shorter HDMI 48Gbps/8k cables, but unfortunately no luck. Next I'll see if I can try a different Atmos soundbar. Thanks again.

I don’t read any reference to Netflix atmos streaming content to tcl series 6 earc port. Do you get actually get Dolby atmos audio, was told no is that right or wrong?
My AVR is seeing an Atmos signal coming from the TV.
I am curious as to how you got yours to pick up where it says "Detected: DTHD, DD+, DTS" On mine it only says DD+, DTS. I know that my sound bar supports Atmos, its the Vizio Elevate. Is there a setting I'm missing somewhere that can detect it so its added to the list? I have mine set to passthrough as well.
Did you figure this out? Mine says the same
@@lizadting89 I did not. I ended up returning that TV to the VIZIO OLED.
So earc can take the audio signal from another input on the tv and send it to receiver over the arc port? I have a 1080p receiver but plan on getting this 4k tv and hooking the ps5 and xbox series x up to the hdmi ports on the tv and then passing audio over the arc port to the receiver.
Yes Logan, you can run the audio as you are describing
@@TechnoDad thanks!
Off topic but do you know if the sony a1e oled is earc capable via firmware update ?

Hi! Yes, you should be able to set the PS5 to 1080p.
What if I don't have a receiver? I just have an LG Meridian dolby atmos soundbar. Thank you!
You would have to setup the soundbar to receive an ARC signal.
Hello...
Should we route all HDMI devices thru tv vs. AVR?
Then run eARC. ?
It IS easier on end user i.e WAF
This is my question too. I see both options available but seeing sometimes only one option works. Does one way get better audio vs the other (I.e. compressed etc)?
@@richardlitten567 so eARC cannot send uncompressed audio to AVR..
What is the impact of this?
Jay Goodman Idk I’m no pro at any of this. I’ve been seeing videos of DD+ vs TrueHD and of course I want the TrueHD lossless audio. I’m seeing videos say don’t need to upgrade avr just route ps5/Xbox/etc to tv then avr (seeing sometimes that doesn’t work)

eARC needs an HDMI cable with ethernet to work properly. I think that might be it, but if it's not, I'm not sure. How were you sending the DTS signal?

Techno Dad, I need to buy a new 7.2 AV Receiver. Do you have an opinion about the difference between Denon S and X series AVRs ? On Crutchfield, I am looking at two Denon AVRs: The Denon S960H ($649) and the X2700H ($849). Both are are rated for 4 ohms, which I like, and have the same 32-bit AKM D/A converters, and similar watts specs. However the S series AVRs tend to get better customer reviews than the more expensive X series ? Do you have any guidance for this decision ? (Both look like they would meet my needs. I certainly do not mind saving money by choosing an S series.)
Hi! The X series has more flexibility and options. Zone 2, RS 232 port, and I think a better version of Audyssey Room Calibration on the X-Series. You can't go wrong with either one in my opinion. When you get to the X3700H, you get A LOT more, but they start at $1,200.
Techno Dad Thanks so much.
So I have S535 and Vizio SB36514 sound bar. I did everything you mentioned, but still no sound passed through... any thoughts?
I have a two month old 65R635 and the same Visio soundbar, SB36514-G6, and auto passthrough only detects Stereo and only sends stereo through. I have to manually put the audio on DD+, DTS to get surround sound. However, I'm not sure I'm getting full Dolby Atmos by forcing this. I've put in tickets with both Roku and TCL to see if they can resolve. Any thoughts/ideas Techno Dad? Would this be a Roku or TCL issue? Thanks.
I figured out my issue today. In troubleshooting, I hooked up my Vizio soundbar to my older Samsung TV via HDMI ARC and could not get any sound to come through. Called Vizio, they had me unplug the TV and soundbar and then press and hold down on the power button on the soundbar for 5 seconds. Plugged everything back in and sound was working. So I hooked up the soundbar to my TCL and did the same thing and now Auto Passthrough detects my soundbar as expected w/ DD+, DTS capabilities.
Hey have you had any audio sync issues? If i'm using an Nvidia Shield and Sonos Arc with the TCL R635 which one should I connect to eARC?
Im thinking Nvidia Shield -> R635 via eARC -> Sonos Arc via ARC?
Nevermind I think I fixed my own confusion after some research. So HDMI ARC on TVs can downstream lossless audio content from a media device such as a Bluray player or content from an Nvidia Shield Pro, the issue is that HDMI ARC ports on TVs cannot UPSTREAM lossless auto formats. Hence, why they invented eARC which can both upstream and downstream lossless content.
So it should be Nvidia Shield --> R635 via HDMI ARC --> Sonos Arc via HDMI eARC
Hi Dennis! That should work. Try it out and let me know how it goes!
