    Oakwood station was originally named Enfield West upon its opening in 1932. South of Arnos Grove station the Piccadilly Line tracks cross over the A406 North Circular Road on a brick viaduct before going into the tube tunnels north of Bounds Green.

  • @MikeGMcDermott
    @MikeGMcDermott 4 года назад +4

    The sub-surface station platforms at Hounslow West only came into being when the new Heathrow Airport extension of the Picc was constructed in 1975 as the original terminus platforms at Hounslow West were located to the left before you arrive Hounslow West, these old platforms which have since been made into a large commuter car park. District Line services also ran between South Ealing and Hounslow West up until October 1964, hence the four-track layout between South Ealing and Northfields whereupon between Northfields and Hounslow West the District Line services alternated with the Piccadilly Line services. Also just before you arrive at Hounslow East there is the short remains of the former track bed which carried the line to the original Hounslow Town station; this now being the site of Hounslow bus garage.

      I too rode the line frequently during the early 1980's between Caledonian Road (student digs) and Hounslow West(girlfriend)/Heathrow, and I concur about the journey being long-winded & uncomfortable - however, before the line was extended to Heathrow (in the 1970's?) Hounslow West was a terminus and you used to have to change to a bus for the final few miles, so the journey took even longer!

    At 44:26 to 44:33 those thud sounds at that Platform In Barons Court remember that well. That was like that for years. And also on the Piccadilly Eastbound Side between Stamford Ravenscourt Park just after the bridge and more or less parallel to the park and Padling pool just before the station over the Arches there there was also a few loud thuds in that area around there and would be really bouncy. And down in the park you could feel it all rumble on the ground the vibration from the arches. I always remember it going slowly aswell one time slowing right down and going over it about 15 20 MPH and.the distance between those gaps it would still rumble and make a good thud noise

    Did you know Turnpike Lane is the ONLY station on the WHOLE underground 🚇 system that has THREE exits in THREE DIFFERENT POSTCODES. The official address and exit is Langham Rd, N15. That is South Tottenham. There is an exit at Costa Coffee which is in N22, Wood Green and finally the third exit is outside Ducketts Common park which is N8, Hornsey.

I figure that when returning to daylight, it's needed because of the operator's vision being limited while adjusting to the glare.

    • @glynwelshkarelian3489
      @glynwelshkarelian3489 4 года назад

      Just guessing as well. I would assume it is a LT 'traditional' shorthand term for set of extra learned skills and reactions beyond normal driving techniques, for situations that are unusual or irregular. So the Underground does not have a lot of steep gradients or trees dropping leaves on the lines, and an Underground driver might be on a line without either; but, as a professional, they should know what to do to safely drive over them, or any other potential difficulty.

    • @eight-two
      @eight-two 4 года назад +2

      All railway operators in the UK have a "professional driving policy" which details how the train should be driven. Am I mistaken, or did the train enter Acton Town on the District Line platform?

    • @CoolTransport
      @CoolTransport 5 лет назад +1

      it is the district and Piccadilly platform

    • @acernoks
      @acernoks 5 лет назад

      Thanks. I had been under the impression that tube stock and sub-surface stock used different platforms due to height/loading gauge differences.

    • @michaelgeraghty4981
      @michaelgeraghty4981 5 лет назад +1

      It did. The comentry called it the slow line platform. It looks like there was a break in filming here because the train departed from the fast line platform!

      I think it's a bit later as the 1973 stock trains are in the LUL livery.
      The 1973 stock trains were refurbished during the late 90s.

      London Underground tracks have 2 power rails, and the middle rail is one of them. The other one is the raised rail on the outside, usually furthest from the platforms.

    Lol, the thumbnail doesn't portend great things for a ride on a 21st century metro system! Things have certainly changed by the time it reaches Heathrow, though the story in between is hardly one of inexorable progress. It's often one of the most uncomfortable and unreliable lines on the network, which is faintly reassuring, given that it serves some of the most prosperous addresses in London. Too prosperous to use the tube, perhaps!
