The obvious way up Grasmoor is direct up the screes from Lanthwaite on the Crummock Water road, picking through the rock scenery above to appear on Grasmoor End from the north west. This involves 2,000 ft (610 m) of ascent in about half a mile. From the same starting point a detour along Liza Beck/ Gasgale Gill can be used to give access to the northern slopes. A way can then be found almost direct to the summit around the rim of Dove Crags. From Rannerdale a choice of routes arises, either climbing the Lad Hows ridge or following Red Gill a little to the west. Finally Coledale Hause can be used to gain the main ridge between Crag Hill and Grasmoor. This can be reached from Lanthwaite or as the first objective of a longer march from Braithwaite in the east. Coledale Hause connects to Hopegill Head and the fells to the north, providing further indirect possibilities.
At the western end of Grasmoor the summit area narrows, culminating at the subsidiary top of Grasmoor End (2,445 ft / 745 m) which crowns the western face. Great fans of scree descend to the lakeside road below. Grasmoor has one minor ridge which descends south-westward over Lad Hows (1,397 ft / 426 m) before a steeper fall to the valley floor.
To the south of Grasmoor is the valley of Rannerdale, which flows to Crummock Water between Lad Hows and the neighbouring Wandope. This drainage is supplemented by Cinderdale Beck, separating Lad Hows from the main body of the fell. The northern flank of the ridge stands above Liza Beck, in the valley of Gasgale Gill. This stream also makes due west for Crummock Water, but is diverted northward by the low top of Lanthwaite Hill to join the Cocker after its exit from the lake. An area of lowland to the north-west is thus annexed to Grasmoor from the natural territory of Whiteside.
Hopegill Head is the middle fell of three fells on a ridge that starts at Braithwaite and goes west for eight kilometres to conclude at the northern end of Crummock Water.
The other two fells on the ridge are Grisedale Pike and Whiteside.
The fell is often referred to locally as Hobcarton Pike as it stands at the head of Hobcarton Gill. However, the Ordnance Survey have officially named the fell Hopegill Head on maps after Hope Gill, which is another valley that goes north-west from the summit.
Hopegill Head reaches a height of 770 metres (2526 feet) and has two subsidiary summits, Ladyside Pike (703 metres / 2306 feet) and Sand Hill (756 metres / 2480 feet)
Hopegill Head’s most striking feature is the 130-metre-high (417-foot-high) cliff of Hobcarton Crag, which drops precipitously to Hobcarton Gill on the fell's north east side. These cliffs are unsuitable for conventional rock climbing because they are made of crumbly Skiddaw Slate.
Whiteside forms a shallow crescent, concave to the south and fringed on that face by the great wall of Gasgale Crags. These drop 500 ft direct from the summit ridge into the valley below. The eastern end of the fell connects to Hopegill Head without any great loss of height, while the western end of the ridge descends steeply over Whiteside End to the Vale of Lorton. The subsidiary top of Whin Ben (1,355 ft) stands at the south west corner.
The northern slopes are much more extensive with two long ridges being thrown out from the main mass of the fell. The shorter is Penn, while further to the east is Dodd (1,489 ft). The valley of Hopegill separates Dodd from Ladyside Pike and the northern ridge of Hopegill Head.

The moment i saw you start to lose your footing on that horrendous scree heading up the front face of Grasmoor it instantly took me back to my own horrendous decent down the front face of Kirk Fell only last month, never again! On a positive note though, it did take me back to 2016 when we did Whiteside and Hopegill Head together, great memories of that one. 👍😊

Brilliant video Andrew! Great to see that route up Grasmoor as I've never done it. The upper part looks great but I'm afraid I'd never get past that horrible scree lower down 😧Love watching Billy finding the route ❤Also love the speeded up lunch and the battered flask 😅 You've really found your niche with these videos - and keep going whatever the weather 👍

Hi Andy and Billy. Great viewing! It felt like i was doing it with you I was that hooked on it although i think I would have had a heart attack going up those screes. I was surprised to see that the path higher up actually look well used in places thinking not many people would attempt that route. Well done Andy on finding the route up and getting that monkey off your back after a ten year wait. All the very best

Hi Andy. Nothing like a good scree slope at the start of a hike to get the muscles warmed up. Bloody frustrating that stuff, one step forward and three steps back!! Great footage as usual, nice and quiet route too. Up there with me walking boys on the 16th of November for 5 days, can't wait. Cheers, Ozzy.

Crumbs! Well, that's one route up where I can safely say I probably won't be following in your or 'Alfwed's' footsteps! And that choir, piano player and drummer did well to follow you up there... 🤣 Terrific video though of a very tough route up and well done for exorcising a demon. A great approach to Hopegill Head and Whiteside around from Dove Crags, which I think are two underrated and less popular tops which have always been favourites in that area. Shame it clagged in on you this time.

Ha Ha, and I thought it was a bit of a steep slog going up Grasmoor from Cinderdale Beck. That was a tough old route you took up there Andy. The scree looked like walking in quicksand or summat like that. Shame the weather turned crap on you but that was a lovely story of how your dad got you into fell walking. I bet you treasure that flask too. Thanks for sharing your latest adventure Andy, much appreciated. PS: I hope Billy got a bit of a treat too!

Well marra I was actually waiting for you doing this route and you done it lol....I've been up the grass to the start of the scree and its looks very intimidating looking up there. I've also done some reading up on this route but didn't find that much online to be honest.I think if you haven't the legs for this you are in trouble on the rest or the ascent after the first scree. Blown away by it awesome footage and well done and looks like The Rock Star enjoyed it. Not forgetting my favourite route at the end Whiteside and Whin Ben...for me after a long hike you know when your legs are shot once you get on the bridge lol and back to the car.. Epic and you both nailed the route will be watching this again 👌

I've been wondering for a couple of years if it was worth heading up that scree path for a look. Inspired by your video I went up this afternoon. What a fantastic route up Grasmoor! Relentlessly steep, always interesting but with nothing technical (unless you want to go off-piste). I loved the skinny gully and the winding ridge line above. The scree was hard work, but I found my walking poles very useful on that section. Thanks.

Yep I sympathise with ya made the same mistake 10 years ago it's one that needs a lot of attention with the route finding...that terrace puts folk wrong as the path runs left to right with nothing indicating the correct way straight ahead.
Thanks for watching very much appreciated 😊
