Hopegill Head is the middle fell of three fells on a ridge that starts at Braithwaite and goes west for eight kilometres to conclude at the northern end of Crummock Water.
The other two fells on the ridge are Grisedale Pike and Whiteside.
The fell is often referred to locally as Hobcarton Pike as it stands at the head of Hobcarton Gill. However, the Ordnance Survey have officially named the fell Hopegill Head on maps after Hope Gill, which is another valley that goes north-west from the summit.
Hopegill Head reaches a height of 770 metres (2526 feet) and has two subsidiary summits, Ladyside Pike (703 metres / 2306 feet) and Sand Hill (756 metres / 2480 feet)
Hopegill Head’s most striking feature is the 130-metre-high (417-foot-high) cliff of Hobcarton Crag, which drops precipitously to Hobcarton Gill on the fell's north east side. These cliffs are unsuitable for conventional rock climbing because they are made of crumbly Skiddaw Slate.
Whiteside forms a shallow crescent, concave to the south and fringed on that face by the great wall of Gasgale Crags. These drop 500 ft direct from the summit ridge into the valley below. The eastern end of the fell connects to Hopegill Head without any great loss of height, while the western end of the ridge descends steeply over Whiteside End to the Vale of Lorton.
The subsidiary top of Whin Ben (1,355 ft) stands at the south west corner.
The northern slopes are much more extensive with two long ridges being thrown out from the main mass of the fell.
The shorter is Penn, while further to the east is Dodd (1,489 ft).
The valley of Hopegill separates Dodd from Ladyside Pike and the northern ridge of Hopegill Head.

I went up Dodd last summer when the bracken was high I thought there was a path up the front and there was a bit of a trod but it faded out and I just had to traverse round the fell eventually making it up to that cairn you found, boy was it steep .😩😩.

I've been up the North side of Dodd, no real path anywhere. Steep with deep heather and rocky outcrops, "fun" if you like that sort of thing. There's a nice descent from the Dodd col following the path Southwest then South to Cold Gill Beck and then pathless down the beck. Thanks for another great video.
Lol....we love that kind of thing...although it did look a bit horrendous especially getting down...ill have to check the Cold Gill route I think I've been down it but it's many years ago.

Hi great video. Do you know if the fells on the fairfield horseshoe are covered in snow? Wanted to go tomorrow but have microspikes with me and ice axe but no crampons and B2 boots.
Hiya Buddy the Fairfield Hills have had a snow it could also be icy I'd say definitely to the Micro Spikes and the axe should see you ok.
