    I definitely prefer JJ's coat of arms. Could maybe use a few additions though. At the very least I'd add some hockey sticks along the bottom and slather everything in maple syrup.
    Seriously though, it's time for Canada to get rid of these British symbols that mean nothing to most Canadians these days. Imagine how many more Canadian historical figured we could have on our money if we got rid of the queen on our coins and $20 bill. Also I cringe any time I'm at an event in Canada where people sing God Save the Queen when there is no obvious reason to. It's not our anthem!

      @robinshea6827 6 лет назад +10

      I've heard it's because when Scotland and England unified, it was seen as Scotland 'handing over the reigns to England'. James VI moved down south, and the government was based down south. Especially with England's bigger population, army, and economy, and its empire starting off successfully. And Scotland being bankrupted by an unsuccessful attempt at an empire.

      Accordingly to what i've read the unicorn was adopted as the national "mascot" in the late 14 th century, because this creature (for some reason) is the rival of the lion, England's symbol, so i guess the unicorn was chosen on purpose. The crown with a chain represents the monarch power, that is the only thing that can keep the unicorn tamed.

      England did technically conquer Scotland, briefly. Edward I was acknowledged as Lord Paramount of Scotland, whom all claimants to the Scottish Crown acknowledged English suzerainty. This was brief, obviously, didn't last and has absolutely nothing to do with the coat of arms.

    • @finaltuned2755
      @finaltuned2755 5 лет назад +2

      @Alex Saunders, By that logic that means the Catholic Jacobites led by Prince Charles conquered England briefly as well, and that England was a long conquered nation before that with the Norman ascendancy - which was a Papist integration of more land with Rome the capital to set down more roots in foreign lands.
      King Edward I of England was invited over, he was an opportunist, he saw an opportunity in Scotland's lack of stability after the death of King Alexander III of Scotland and Queen Margaret Queen of Scots (Maid of Norway) dying on the boat journey over to Scotland being the catalyst that started it off in the first place.

      @@rajkaranvirk7525 You have some good points, but I do like our current coat of arms. We are not a colony but are still in the commonwealth, it is nice to acknowledge our roots especially since we are a country where we delete everything old to make room for the new sadly. We have to remember where we came from, maturing as a country recognises this while at the same time moving forward. Also, I think the intention with the coat of arms is important, as is it intended specifically Canadian government to be a symbol currently, or just something to represent us? In a nutshell, it represents us, and I would argue that it even does so currently as those things are constant -- it isn't like our founders can change. What isn't constant is influence, especially with everyone coming here now, but that doesn't mean it still does not represent us. I get that JJ thinks it doesn't represent us currently, but it still whether he likes to think about it or not, does represent Canada in a sense that the government looks at, which isn't the current "culture" or whatever he and other people so often look to for a new coat of arms.

      Technicalllllllly…while they’re not represented in the UK coat of arms (which is simultaneously that of the monarch…it’s…complicated), they are included in the coat of arms of the heir (or at least, they were until the King came to the throne).
      Because the heir is Prince of Wales, the arms of Scotland are at the centre (an “inescutcheon”) of his coat of arms.
      And because he’s also Duke of Cornwall, the coat of arms of Cornwall (basically, nine yellow dots, or ‘bezants’ on a black, or ‘sable’ background) is also featured: it’s below the main coat of arms of the Prince of Wales.
      And the heir has a totally separate coat of arms that he uses just for Scotland, with allusions to his titles of Duke of Rothesay, Prince and Great Steward of Scotland, and Lord of the Isles, all of which he holds as regards Scotland.

    I would like to point out things I think is a Mistake:
    "Scotland was Conquered by England".
    Scottish monarch inherit English throne because the English ones keep dying out without any heirs.
    And because there is no other contestant on the English throne, the Scottish royal family merge the crown since both are inseparable, creating a Personal Union, which happens a lot. You don't have to conquer a nation to annex it, back then.
    "Back when France owned by England"
    Country couldn't own another Country. It's the monarch or person who control over the land, not the state. Also English kings were only control half of France (Aquitania, Gascony, Anjou, Normandy) and they never actually obtain the French Crown themself. Maybe the Fleur de Lys is a homage to the French Heritage of Quebec, because Canada was a French Colony.
    Also Canada is a British dominion and their head of state is Queen Elizabeth II, so yeah, the similar coat of arms is make sense. You're not independent, Canada, just self governing.

Additional examples include but are not limited to: The reigning monarch on our coins, $20.00 and $1,000.00 bank notes, the Ontario and Manitoba versions of the Red Ensign (as well as other provincial flags), even the political system as a whole.
    I also fly a canvas Union Jack or a Green Leaf Red Ensign from time to time. There are many things that make Canada a nation we can mutually pride ourselves in (Maple syrup, hockey, beavers, moose, lots and lots of snow, red /black checkered plaid shirts, poutine, bagged milk, Kraft Dinner, early thanksgiving, universal health care, etc.) and the British symbols, motifs, homages, and other such reminders are a key part of this great nation that spans from sea to shining sea.

    Supporters (currently the lion and unicorn): polar bear on left, moose on right
    Crest (currently the crowned lion): a beaver holding a maple leaf
    Shield: divided into three sections by an upside-down Y shape: in the first section, a white pine on red, yellow and black; in the second section, a grey inukshuk on white; in the third section, a white Metis infinity symbol on blue

    When he said “every country has one”, that peaked my interest and I just had to Google image search “United States coat of arms”.
    Definitely nothing I hadn’t seen before, but I never really connected the dots that that’s what it was-probably because we call it the Great Seal or something weird like that. I guess the founding fathers associated the phrase “coat of arms” with the British monarchy or something.

    • @Christopher_TG
      @Christopher_TG 4 года назад +6

      The official coat of arms of the United States is simply the design that's inside the Great Seal ( rb.gy/qwib7g ). Like the Canadian coat of arms it still follows European heraldic tradition, but it's far simpler with only four elements (escutcheon, supporter, crest, motto) as opposed to Canada's seven (escutcheon, supporters, crest, torse, order, motto, compartment). Plus its armiger is the country of the United States while the armiger of Canada's coat of arms is the Queen of Canada.

    I like J.J.'s, with one addendum: put the Crown at the top. :D Anyway, the problematic thing about the current one isn't so much that it has imperial roots, but that the British symbols far outweigh the other elements in it. Canada purports to be bilingual with three "founding nations" (the British, the French, and the First Nations). There is nothing signifying the First Nations, and the references to the French (the fleur-de-lis) are clearly thrown in as a mere token in the mix rather than given an equal presence as a founding nation. The national balance portrayed (between the English & the Scots) is definitely more relevant to the UK rather than Canada.

    The shield is called an escutcheon, it's the most important part of a coat of arms, the eponymous _arm,_ i.e., weapon. Historically, a coat of arms was part of what the modern world calls _dress blues_ - i.e., military formal-wear. The various animals and other emblems on a traditional coat of arms all hold specific meanings, and were generally meant to represent someone's achievements and/or heritage, particularly insofar as they answer two questions: "who are you?" and "why should I care?"

Fun fact: there were scots on both sides of the battle of Québec, which pitted french troops and canadian militia against scottish highlanders and english troops, on a field owned by a former scotsman. Among the canadian militia were immigrants from scotland, bretony and other parts of the french-allied political sphere.

    A coat of arms refers not only to a "country's logo" but any armorial achievement that can be borne by individuals, corporations, municipalities, etc. Most of the elements of the shield that you pointed out, including the "lion" and "weird helmet" and "flowers" have names, respectively the "supporters", "helm", and "compartment". While I do agree the Canadian coat of arms isn't the best national coat and could definitely be improved, please do your research before making another video that concerns heraldry.

    At 2:06. France was never owned by England. England owned parts of France and tried to take over ALL of France in the Hundred Years' War. But the French fought fiercely so that the English could never do so. That's why there are French national heroes like Joan of Arc, etc. It was during this loooong ass war that the French came to hate the English and vice-versa. That being said, the English kings never gave up their claim to the French throne and stubbornly stuck that claim into their official coat of arms. Hence the three fleur de lis. I believe it was only during the reign of King George IV that the personal coat of arms of the British monarch FINALLY got rid of that childish claim to the French throne. But the official coat of arms of Canada never made that switch apparently.

      Definitely an improvement! The star is used by Jews, but it has no religious meaning! It is simply a neutral symbol that Jews use in lieu of a cross or crescent.

    I like our coat of arms. Canada was founded by the British, our institutions and everything we like about our nation is in part thanks to the British and the countries that make up the UK. Including France. To ignore all that is ignoring our heritage and what differentiates us from the Americans. Well that and we're less crazy... Over weight and gun happy. But I diregress, Retaining the few vestiges we have of the British reminds us of where we came from, how we became the nation we are today and in a way shows a sign of respect to the country and it's people who helped make it all happen.

    So many mistakes. JJ, please do proper research next time and don't give such a biased version of Canadian history.
    1. The chains on the unicorn do not represent England's "conquest" of Scotland, which is btw not an accurate way to describe how England and Scotland were united anyway. Unicorns are traditionally chained in heraldry, as a sort of symbol of the bearer's strength - a unicorn is legendarily wild and untameable, so if you actually managed to tame it, you must be very powerful.
    2.The other parts on the UK shield do not represent other parts of the 'British Empire', they represent other parts of BRITAIN. Since France was no longer claimed when Canada was formed in 1921, its inclusion on the Canadian arms couldn't possibly be symbolising ownership over France. Obviously, therefore, it represents French Canadians, one of the founding peoples of Canada, while the other parts represent English, Scottish, and Irish Canadians.
    3. FFS, Canada wasn't a colony in 1921. It was a Dominion, which by that time essentially meant it was independent, a position formalised just a few years after that. Why can't you accept that many Canadians at the time still saw Britain as the mother country and felt a special tie to it, but were nonetheless independent members of the Empire, like Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland? It's perfectly understandable that you don't see that legacy as relevant anymore, but that doesn't mean that it has "nothing to do" with Canada - clearly, it's pretty central to Canada's history, and moreover it's a heritage that was celebrated way past the point at which Canada effectively was fully independent, not something that existed only when Canada was a colony and has now gone away because Canada is now independent.
    I do actually like your design, it's a lot more like Australia, which used native animals and such (adopted soon after Australia federated into one Dominion just like Canada - apparently them being a "colony" as you wrongly termed it did not stop them from strongly asserting a more independent identity while maintaining the same loyalty to the 'mother country' as Canada). Would be nice to also represent the provinces. However, I also like the current coat of arms, most importantly because I don't think a country's historical legacy and where it came from have nothing to do with it - it's actually much stranger for a country to turn its back on its past and the basis for its foundation (which in Canada's case, the preamble of the constitution states quite clearly). Certainly, this doesn't have to be represented in the coat of arms, as Australia, NZ, and others show, but it's not a bad thing either. Perhaps Canada's coat of arms overdoes it, I could agree with that - a compromise solution could be to change the supporters (the animals on either side) with Canadian animals as you propose in your version.

      "The chains actually signify that the unicorn cannot be oppressed, since the chains are broken and, if reattached to anything, will be broken again. The unicorn with the chain has been used as a Scottish royal symbol since long before the union with England."

      Well if you want to be technical, Ireland wasn't independent at all in 1921. And probably you could argue no dominion was in effect until the Statute of Westminster in 1931.

    • @jdbtl
      @jdbtl 7 лет назад

      Regarding Ireland, you're right, dominion status officially only took effect the following year. Regarding dominions, the term 'dominion' was one that dates at least to Canada's Confederation in 1867. Though its meaning evolved over time, it was from the beginning always meant to be a state of greater independence than a 'colony'. It's pretty clear that by 1921, if not earlier, it had come to mean virtually independent with the main exception of foreign affairs, hence Ireland in 1921 was granted 'dominion' status. This meaning of dominion was formalised and enhanced into complete independence with the statute of Westminster. Legally speaking, yes, dominion status was officially, de jure, still much more like being a colony with Britain still being able to make laws for dominions etc., but as with so many things in the British constitution, what's on paper is not a perfect representation of reality. For example, when did Britain become a parliamentary system instead of a monarchy, with the prime minister really being chosen by and responsible to parliament instead of the monarch? On paper, Britain (as well as Australia and Canada) are still fully monarchies. In reality, though, they're obviously parliamentary systems.

    The fleur-de-lis was removed from the British coat of arms in 1801. The one on the Canadian coat of arms represents Quebec. The Scots just like their unicorns in chains. It has nothing to do with conquest. The English used financial and trade pressure to force the Scots into a union in 1707. The Scots had lost their money in the Darien Scheme in 1700, so the country was financially vulnerable.

    I was thinking we could have the national animal (Beaver) in the middle of a shield in the middle of the coat of arms, and under the beaver the national motto. Then we could have moose on either side and 2 hockey sticks which are handle to handle on the bottom. Maple leaves could line the top like tinsel almost. Maybe we could also incorporate Tim Hortons, maple syrup and poutine too..... probably not though aha. I also really like the idea Lancer011 had. :). I'm not sure I have an opinion about removing the hints to our British/ French history, though.

    This video is wrong, the unicorn is chained up because chaining a unicorn was seen as the greatest achievement a Scottish king could achieve, it is not seen as a symbol was English supremacy especially due to the fact that the concept was prominent in Scotland long before Britain was established. 1:50
