This was the only thing that was adding extra capacity to the railways. If its not done now its still going to need to be done at some point in the future! Our Victorian railway infrastructure can't cope now!
A lot of people on here are confused, not surprising as Sunak & his chums were making it up as they went along, and most of the supposed press initially got it wrong as well. This is the part (phase 1) that joins the existing West Coast line three miles north of Litchfield at Handsacre and it will carry HS2 trains heading to Manchester, Liverpool, Lancaster and Glasgow. Work on this section was largely paused until 2025 to 'save' money (which it probably won't). Even Sunak realises that the fleet of 54 trains now on order need to go to places other than Birmingham.
Nice to know some one else other than myself actually knows what is going on here, as you say the Government is giving out the wrong information as well as the press
This section between Birmingam and Lichfield is not cancelled being a part of Phase 1 of HS2 . This section is being constructed as far as Lichfield where the HS2 line will connect onto the WCML for Manchester. The section cancelled is the High Speed phase 2 section from Lichfield to Manchester
There were questions in the House of Commons about this particular alignment after the cancellation announcement. Generally the political consensus from all sides seemed to be that as this part is on the route to what will become Handsacre junction it would likely still need to be completed as trains will still need to travel north from Birmingham Curzon street or bypass Brum altogether via the delta. No actual commitment was made though, so we will see what happens
Curzon Street being in Birmingham hardly by passes Birmingham. Handsacre junction permits trains to rejoin the Northern leg from Birmingham. Without that junction the line is reduced to London to Birmingham.
This section of HS2 from Water Orton Delta Junction on the outskirts of Birmingham is still being built to Lichfield where is connects on to the WCML at Handsacre to take HS2 trains to Manchester via Crewe, it is only the piece of HS2 from Lichfield to Manchester that has been cancelled. At the moment they are constructing the Delta Junction.
Not sure what is happening but my comment did not appear, the line from Water Orton to Lichfield is still being built and this will connect to the WCML at Lichfield / Handsacre where Manchester bound HS2 trains will join the WCML
What a waste of time and money cancelling this is and look at the blight on the landscape. Any other country would have finished such a project by now and been running trains. Why is it only in britain that we can end up with such a mess covered in meaningless promises .,?
The section from Water Orton on the edge of Birmingham to Lichfield and Handsacre is still going to be constructed which will take HS2 trains onto the WCML and Manchester. They have slid a bridge under the WCML near Lichfield which will allow HS2 trains to go under the WCML and are building the Delta Junction at Water Orton at the moment and what seems to happen on HS2 is they build the major building works like the Delta Junction and this Bridge and once the rest of HS2 is completed they will start moving North from Birmingham
Yes, the east side of Birmingham has been largely destroyed, as will the route up to Lichfield. Water Orton is unrecognisable now. Oh well, only another 6 years to go!.

When HS2 is built the land will be restored, just as it was in Kent for HS1. In fact the railway cuttings and embankments will allow wild flowers and insects to thrive in many locations where previously there were just sterile fields.

They need to protect the land, pause and review the project. Cancelling at this stage is terrible waste of resources and opportunity for this country.
I agree. The damage done can only be justified if the project is revived at some point in the future.
