HS2 Delta junction Birmingham- London 2024
HS2 engineers have completed the final operation to move two railway viaducts into place over the M42/M6 link roads in North Warwickshire, making them the first viaduct structures to be built at Delta Junction.
The ‘push’ to move the 158-metre-long ‘West Link Viaduct’ into its final position over both westbound and eastbound motorway link roads took a total of 11 hours over the weekend.
HS2 Ltd, its main works contractor Balfour Beatty VINCI (BBV) and National Highways collaborated to minimise disruption for people using the roads and enabling these engineering feats to take place. How anyone can like this waste of land on an island as small as ours is beyond me.
I am concerned to see enormous mountains of earth along the route here. They may be cuttings, but wait a minute, to clear the M42 slip roads by overhead viaduct, the whole section has to be raised above ground. So, not cuttings. They may be embankments, but wait, the plans and sections showed viaducts throughout. So not embankments. But maybe, yes, as a cost saving exercise you see, the viaducts were substituted. Oh I hope not. What an ugly intrusion, removing the through views that the virgin landscape permitted before the works began. And so, by degrees, HS2 looks increasingly like a series of bad planning decisions from the mid twentieth century
Nice work Paul. Congratulations on the 1000 Subs
Thanks Richard onwards and upwards time of year bit bad for my style of content m8
Excellent idea to put a map at the beginning.
Good footage. It's peak mess and disruption on the ground atm but hopefully there should be significant progress in another 6 to 12 months. Those viaduct machines move pretty well once they get going, as seen in the Colne valley.
Putting the delta junction right on top of the m6 m42 corridor, the busiest area of motorway in the country outside a couple of bits of the m25. They couldn't have caused more inconvenience if they tried. I'm dreading the impact of the motorway closures when they have to span 10 lanes of the m42. I'll be glad when it's done.
That's the bit I'm most interested in, and what overnight chaos it's gonna cause me on my trips back down from Scotland...
Thankyou.
I hate to pint this out Roy but this is not the result, it’s part of the process that’s leads to a result. Stay tuned.
Thanks to Paul for this excellent video. Interesting how the HS2 site is just a mudbath in places but in others you can see the completed formation emerging.
Wow, that was a surprising 180 degree turn and twenty mile jump from Welsh Road to Greatworth! I feel sure that those trees at the edge of Halse Copse on top of the cutting won't be staying, sad to say. We can of course console ourselves that this railway will be an enormous benefit to the region, particularly Thorpe Mandeville! I note the permanent destruction of the watercourse crossed at 9.12. HS2 will have to answer for that
So much devastation for so little result!
Remind me just how wide is the railway?
Wider than just two tracks, if you look closely a lot is being done to sink the railway below “field level” to reduce the visual and sound impact on the local environment. This needs sloped embankments.
I have never know so much destruction of the countryside
Yes it's a massive mess
@@paulcgburrows7267Moving all the earth must cost a fortune. Maybe they need to look how Robert Stephenson built railways ?
Possibly because drones are a relatively new invention. Imagine if they had been around when the motorway network was being constructed with six or eight lanes - much wider than HS2 - plus sprawling junctions and service areas.
@@RalphFreeman-ok5ofStephenson lived before the age of environmental awareness. Much of what you can see in these videos is the extensive earthworks to sink the railway into the landscape plus the huge areas of mitigation planting - new woodland, grassland and habitat formation.
Great video good drone work .
All well and good but still doesn't get around the existing bottlenecks of Colwich Junction, Shugborough Tunnel and Stafford. Phase 2a is pretty much essential for the full capacity benefits of HS2 to realised. The decision to scrap phase 2a was nothing short of ludicrous as it was by far the easiest section to build with no major topographical challenges to overcome thereby being the cheapest section. Absolutely it has been eye wateringly expensive to build but this is a very long term investment in the country's infrastructure so over its lifespan, both directly and indirectly, it will pay for itself. Of course all alternative suggestions are welcome for scrutiny.
200 years ago, viaducts were considered ugly....now we look at them as things of beauty......this looks lots of hard work and it should have just been built on columns.
Nothing but a monstrous blot on the landscape & a complete & utter waste of billions of pounds. HS2 is an environmental disaster of epic proportions & Britain's biggest infrastructure mistake in half a century.

what a wast of farm land
What a disgusting and unsightly scar through some beautiful countryside. The gentle accompanying music is a complete juxtaposition to what I see in the video.
Agree mind blowing mess just too save travelers 20 mins absolutely useless Infrastructure 😒
Next year as we start to see the sites being tidied up and landscaping start, concrete base for the track installed, it will really start to come together. An we start to see some of that in the last couple of minutes on the video. It really starting to look like we could see trains running on it by 2028, even if the stations aren't ready for passengers.
What an obscene waste of taxpayers money. When/if this is ever finished it'll be ready for the rail museum in York.
What a mess...what a colossal waste of taxpayers money...why are we building it.
Investing in your home countries infrastructure is not waste of taxpayers money. It employs a lot of people and makes the country future proof. Wars are waste of money … 😮
If you call it what it actually is i.e., The West Coast Main Lne diversionary route, then it makes sense. It's politicians who named it HS2 because ithey didn't think that mere taxpayers would understand that the West Coast Main Line was filled to capacity and had no room for slower freight trains. Contrary to popular It is not being built to shave a trivial amount of time off the journey between London and Birmingham.

I got a bit lost in this one. Some subtitles each time you change location would be very helpful gspecially in such complex areas such as the Delta junction area. However there is real progress.
Looking at this landscape I am reluctant to console myself with the tired old phrase that things get worse before they get better. My response is to realise that almost everyone is not a historian. A future generation will not care to think on the origins of this uncharacteristically vulgar project, conceived by a timid nation, that occupied so much attention in the first decades of the twenty first century
Thanks for doing this area Paul. I use the roads in this area every week at present and food to see what is happening now .Caroline.

Excellent video Paul, I really like your updates. Please keep em coming, that was great to see some new areas that we don't usually see
Thought I heard a drone this afternoon
i can't for the life of me imagine the victorian railway pioneers distroying the land like these have...so much disrtruction and so much expense for what ... a few minutes less on the train WOW and none of yhis will ever be of any benefit to the people of the NORTH yet again.
There would have been a pretty good mess when the early railways were being built. No funding for any remedial works for sure. Massive pollution of rivers. Many men killed building every mile. This area will look just grand, when the work is over, just got to wait a few years and try and see the big picture. It was hardly an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to start with was it !
Are you for real? The Victorians ploughed through whatever was in their way - they ripped through thousands upon thousands of hectares of ancient woodland because it was cheaper than compensating owners of farmed land, housing etc. With all the mitigation in place, about a couple of football pitches worth of ancient woodland are going to be lost to HS2. And the land isn't being distroyed [sic] - almost everything you see that isn't woodland (and even some that is) was completely man-made before HS2 works, and land that isn't railway is going to end up with more biodiversity thanks to the sheer amount of planting, landscaping etc. going on. And it's not about 'a few minutes less', though you've probably been told that many times already.
If you want to know what it will look like when it’s done. Google hs1.
