Made the same choice so long ago. I'm 63 and never repented. Life itself showed me I was right. We all have been sentenced since the beginnig; pain is everywhere and always present, we just can face it, with the weak support of the lies we tell or hear. We get only the time, to take a breath, between a wound and the next.

Yes, very wise words and very true... my favourite quote from Zapffe... It's achievable if everyone had the right mindset. It takes a shift in one's awareness and or conciousness, but once you realise and make the effort you know it's not as hard as may seem. If one person can do it so can everyone else. It's just that some people don't care. It's about making the shift. One person leads hopefully one day everyone will follow. Set the example that's all you can do.

None of us realize what we are. Like it or not, we are eternal and in the third dimension, we never stop struggling. Of course, life is unfair or bleak, just as it must be to force us to deal with whatever we struggle with. We need many lives to extract all the lessons of our remediation. Life is hard but not cruel. True humility will always assist. Growing means increased complexity and simply adds to the struggle. Happiness is a side effect of doing your duty and you get to decide what your duty is.

I think the fable of the Garden of Eden is about that difference. Adam and Eve were not actually immortal, just primitive animals, oblivious to their inevitable, personal death. Avoiding death was an instinct to avoid the pain of dying, not about a fear that one might cease to exist.
Eating from the "Tree of the Knowledge of Life and Death" opened their eyes to that existential threat. I think it's a story about humanity gaining a 'theory of mind' and how becoming self aware changes how we experience death and suffering. They were the first people not because they were a unique creation but because they were the first of their kind to be awakened.
All animals with a 'theory of mind' experience that suffering the same as humans do, IMO.

    • @fr57ujf
      @fr57ujf 2 дня назад

@@ZymonAaronn The survival instinct is about more than just pain avoidance. It is mainly about reproduction. For example, most male animals compete for mates, often injuring themselves.
Human self-awareness is not an awakening but a useful illusion. Along with language, humans develop it around 18 to 24 months. Like other animals, human babies are conscious and aware and get along quite well in their closeted environment without a self-concept.
The self isn't real, but imagining that we have one is essential to navigating the social world on which our survival depends. This social world has enabled us to develop science, technology, and organizational structures that dominate the world. But our inability to see through this illusion keeps us trapped in a cycle of destructive consumption and competition that may end our brief tenure on the planet - or at least our status as apex predator.

I'd like to point out that there are very few stable evolutionary forms. And they all exist in the ocean. Things like sharks, squid, octopi, jellyfish and the deep ocean dwellers can be considered stable evolutionary forms that have not changed much. Everything on the surface are failures of evolution. The surface is not kind to evolution because the cataclysms affect it more directly. So he's not wrong about all this. Humanity is not kind to its other creatures on the surface. One of the hardest questions to answer is: just what are we good for? See if you can answer it.

You know, I ask myself that very same question for straight up 3 years now,so intensly that I gave up even the love of my life, which broke me. The best answer I can give you, is: we´ll never actually know, but what I think atm is basically: as the universe is expanding, so are we, meaning collectivly our conciosness is growing, our knowledge is growing and our numbers as humanity are growing. Now we´ve globally come to a point where things move too fast too quickly, for example our number of humans on planet earth doubled in just 40 years, thats certainly no regular phenomenon. Also look at the speed of technological advances, thats also exponentional. So what I´m trying to say, is , this exponential growth will have a rebound. probably in the form of complete societal collapse. BUT, that doesnt necesarliy mean that we as a species will die out. I´m staying optimistic that some people will survive the craziness thats soon ahead of us and one day humanity will rebuild and use all of the knowledge that we gathered up until the 21st century and start progressing again, so we as a species will continue to progress, maybe actually even visit some other planets some day. I see that as a pretty realistic scenario, at least these patterns of destruction and rebuilding of societies have been a common historical pattern for the last couple of thousand years. But even assuming that history will again play out like this, i´m not sure I can see something beyond humanity starting space exploration and reaching higher levels of conciousness. I´m not sure anyone can see beyond that. But maybe its something like actually understanding one day why we exist by conquering the whole galaxy or something like that, at least that sounds cool in my mind

People ask about the meaning of life or their purpose, as if the universe is hiding it from them. But there doesn't need to be meaning for there to be existence and the universe doesn't owe us any sort of justification. What is the difference between meaning and justification or between a purpose and a function?
I remember hearing a young man tell a story about how he rescued a young women from an abusive situation. He framed it as God (Yahweh) causing her suffering so he could, fulfil God's purpose for him as hero. Seems a bit arrogant, not that I'd put it past the god of the old testament.

To say that mankind is an evolutionary error is to place a moral judgement on something nature produced. Rather, we can say that like many, many species that went extinct, we are an evolutionary dead-end. That's ok, nature and evolution will go on without us after we self-destruct. As for the inevitability of human suffering, Buddha for example acknowledges it, but came to a radically different, more "positive" conclusion, based on empathy and compassion.

Suffering is a normal part of life. For the most part, it teaches us not to make the same mistakes over and over again and to empathize with the suffering of others.
However, each persons suffering must be as a consequence of their own decisions, choices, plans, and actions in life, and not forced upon them against their free will and expressed wishes and without their informed consent by others for their own benefit...

@@davidmann4533 Good question: We all suffer depression to some degree; some more than others. Severe depression could be the result of severe vitamin, mineral, and micro-nutrient imbalances and deficiencies; it could be inherited epigenetically by way of small RNA's from ancestors who suffered severe depression; or it could be the result of unresolved traumatic and depressive psychic imprinting that a person has carried over from a previous life or lives into this life...
What is the purpose of depression if any? Depression is a mood disorder that affects the emotions. If we didn't have emotions, then we wouldn't have severe depression; but then, we would be nothing more than preprogrammed biological robots.
What I'm saying is that sadness, suffering, and depression is the price we have to pay for having emotions. It is the same with free-will: There is no such thing as a little bit of free-will, just as there is no such thing as a little bit of emotion: It is either all or nothing: Ying and Yang, positive and negative, light and dark; you cannot have one without the other; but everything must be kept in balance. Problems manifest when the balance tips too much in the negative or dark direction, usually as a result of ones own actions or the actions of others...

People who live in their minds miss out. We are creative beings and creating sandcastles in only the mind is not enough. Frame what comes your way in helpful framework. Be creative.
