People don't know how to sit still and be quiet that's why we suffer because the mind is always analyzing the meaning of things, but you just need to learn to sit quietly so that the mind doesn't interfere then what you're looking for will reveal itself.
But there is more suffering than that type of existential suffering. There is, for most people of the world, constant threat of war, famine, military occupation, unemployment, illness and poverty etc. If the only suffering one has can be solved by sitting still, then we are very fortunate.
When you can sit in peace and enjoy a sunrise, to find profound joy in holding and playing with a child, to give thanks for a delicious meal. Happy to simply breathe fresh air with no thought. Peace is far better than purpose. ❤

Over 45 years ago, I pulled my chvy4×4 over to the side of the road. There, in a time of despair, overwhelming , sense of purpose came. Very simply, " Become the best man I could be. I agree. You summed it up.😂 I need not have an afterlife or faith in a god. I find purpose in alleviating suffering where I can and perhaps leaving my corner a little better. Keeps me from fretting about my eventual death and oblivion.

Animals, not surprisingly, cope with a similar dilemma. A young puppy felt terribly unhappy. What is the meaning of life? How can I find happiness? Much to his surprise someone had the answer. _Happiness is a dog's tail._ Now he knew. If only I get ahold of my tail I will be happy. The young puppy spun around in circles until he was exhausted, but no matter how hard he tried his tail remained just out of reach. Happiness, for him would remain elusive. After that he abandoned his quest and simply set about his business. And happiness followed him everywhere he went.
We’re here for a good time. Not a long time. The meaning is what you give it. It’s very short. So eat that chocolate. Drink that wine. Love deeply. And most important of all, laugh. Find your joy. Tomorrow’s not promised to anyone.
The meaning of life is the time will come for sure where there will be no one around to even remember if you ever existed. This should be enough to crush the ego of every narcissist!
I can relate to his existential struggle. Growing up as a cradle Catholic, I gradually became disillusioned with what I perceived as the hypocrisy of organized Christianity, especially the fundamentalist version which always seemed steeped in back wood’s ignorance. Yet despite this, I could never deny the unexplained that happened with some frequency in my life. I hesitate calling them miracles because I’m not sure what a miracle is. What matters is that his newfound faith changed his focus from satisfying himself to focusing on others. He seems to have come to an understanding that true meaning emanates out of our relationship with others. At least that’s the lesson I’ve understood from this. I will share this, at one point during the Covid pandemic, our son who was normally a good student, was struggling academically his senior year of high school. At one point, in a moment of despair, I asked my wife what are we going to do? As I finished the sentence, a crucifix mounted on an entertainment cabinet fell face down. My wife was seated, and I was 10 feet away. We have a single story home on a concrete base with Terrazzo tile flooring. I can’t explain this.
Tolstoy's story is almost exactly like mine ! Questioning human beings' existence and its meaning in this world, especially given we have to die and what is death all about, is what consumes me daily, not the material gains nor the academic accomplishment nor the physical looks, just the why of life. It seems we're all just on stage performing and each act brings on new characters performing the same drama and the previous actors are all gone, never to be seen again....is this what life is all about ?
I have had similar struggles throughout my life, and was surprised, that someone as astute, famous and accomplished as Tolstoy pined over the same concerns as I, in my somewhat pathetic existence. It seems, that the intelligent minds of humans are simply inadequate, when it comes to comprehending our own existence. Possibly it is like living inside of a box, our own bodies and minds, in which our vision is so circumscribed, that we are unable to see a more objective, clearer view of our own humanity. Instead, many prefer to give difference, to what most of us believe is a greater intellectual or spiritual power outside of and beyond ourselves, as Tolstoy did. This seems to be our humble and final option at least in our present form, which can supply us with some peace and some much needed humility.
Agree with ET . Yesterday is gone and tomorrow isn't here. There is only now. Besides all depression comes from the past and all anxiety comes from the future. Focus on the now (the present moment) being the best possible version of yourself that you can be.
That's what the difference between thinkers and common people. Final conclusion is faith. What a common man could see, a thinker could not see it for a life time. God bless Lev Tolstoy. 😇
Imagine a particular law and each of them have a frame of reference that law works only in that fram of reference, for example newtonian laws of motion act in a newtonian frame of reference. Now consider your body to be a frame of reference for which the existing laws are true example gravitation, aerodynamics, friction, fluid dynamics etc etc., and then any law beyond that frame would not be experienced by you or having you as a frame of reference right?? But may be there is another science explaining how can you construct an additional frame in this existing frame to have a experience of other laws that is beyond the reach of your existing frame, i.e. the materialistic body, then you can get an access to those laws which are from a different dimension right? Now at this moment you need to believe that though your frame doesnot support the laws beyond what it can actually percieve, that doesnot mean a different reference would fail to explain them as well, This faith that there may be a higher frame of reference is what it means to 'believe' or "Have faith" and the faith is further extended to the hopes that i) I can make a additional frame to seek those laws within the existing frame, kind of like a platform app to launch android apps in pc or ii) By moving to a larger frame being aware of the transition just like discarding your old android to experience new and exciting features on your i pad. In this case you are something that passes on one framw to another frame without being destroyed and that is more significantly a subtle dimension in the frame of reference of a material body. I hope I was able to understand what is faith😊🙏
True people belive in God but what is god is there a God we will know when we die or will we will go to afterlife heaven or hell stop existing or start again in this world or somewere else in the universe but won't remember our previous life's who knows
We believe in God, but when we die-In Bible is written, dust belongs to dust ( our body to earth) spirit belongs to God 🙏 ( spirit which He gave us when He made us, because in order to revive the body it needs the spirit)
When my mother passed away at 70, my mother in law consoled me that mother is now in the garden of my heart. This is life’s continuum , in the Universality of Nature; the faith of Nature, without the confined , tribal religion of my youth. This is also in the wisdom of the founding fathers of USA as, in the Declaration of Independence, in effect to remove religion and to pursuit faith as in the stated “ God of Nature; Nature’s god”. Tolstoy is blessed as he lives on in the life of the intellect advancing civilization of the human being evolved to be the most resourceful in the animal kingdom.

Abraham Lincoln often wondered why we struggle, go through tough times , just to die. His favorite poem goes something like this. Tis the wink of an eye.Tis the draught of a breath. From the gilded salon to the briar & shroud. Why is the spirit of mortal so proud?
We are a conscientious, an energy form. We are trying to experience the positive and negative. We can t experience negative in what you call heaven. So we come here to grow and experience. We learn. We don t have to be here, it’s our free will to grow as we want.

Love is to accept other people exactly as they are. Love is to care, and to help another person with any problem, in any situation. The opposite of love is not hate, it is ego. Love is when you put other people ahead of yourself. Love is where you want to make other people happy. Love is to understand. When you learn what love is, this is the purpose and meaning of life.

Thank you for your observation! 😊 It's interesting how Tolstoy's proposed solution can resonate differently depending on personal experiences. Sometimes, even those who have never asked certain questions can find inspiration in the depth of his reflections. 🙏
The purpose of life is to learn what love is. That's why we are here on earth. When we learn what love is, we become one and the same as God, and then advance to a higher level. We may be given a world of our own. We reincarnate, we come back, again and again, as a man or a woman anywhere on earth, and every life we live, we learn a little more and more about what is love. When we do wrong, we are corrected in such a way, that we will not do those wrong things again
Qur'an 67:2: "He is the One who created death and life in order to test which of you is best in deeds And He is the Almighty, All-Forgiving". This is the purpose of life and the truth, regardless of whether it resonates with you or challenges your ego.
Life isn't about ones self. It's about what we can do to help others. When you look to your own happiness you find only emptiness. When you open your heart to others the whole universe takes the journey with you.
Faith is not an answer either! I've been tormented by these thoughts for so long! I personally think that faith is also one of those four temporary and illusive solutions. Perhaps there is no answer to search for 😢
With faith comes the realization that as we live in God's work of creation God also experiences his work through us. Once this understanding is established then there is nothing lacking.
@@ninanoble8252 Faith is not the answer, it is the steadfast, unwavering focus on the journey. Feelings that cannot be described and which transcend all things is the answer.
Gotta look at religion and the Bible from a bigger picture. Think cosmically. Religion is just a way of life. Human ignorance with greed and lust. Without paths of a good way of life and humans, even the non religious gets chaotic. The ones who say they don't have faith say "God help me" or "Jesus" or "Allah" in moments of despair or joy. It's all a way of living in a peaceful way with faith that there is more which drives us to do better and raise our children right. Humans will literally get so chaotic we will breed with animals and lust and the animals in us will take over or the "demons" as the Christians say. Imagine if the book of Lucifer spread along with the other 3 spread instead of the Bible. No matter if we believe in it, the hate will be everywhere and considered the norm. You are God and God is you. You write your own story. Don't forget that. :)
Leo Tolstoy discovered the real meaning of faith beyond the visible world. Many before him confronted with similar problems, has arrived to the same conclusion. As one's energy rises during teens and twenties, one revolts against social norms and authority to express the excess vitality. As he ages, he gradually studies past philosophies to finally settle down to the normal faithful disciples, but with a wider circle of experiences due to his birth circumstances of wealth, rich heritage, being orphaned at early age, a stable young wife, plenty of children, contained by the severe influence of discipline, a good education which opens him up to great philosophies. This final arrival to faith is just conducive to his old age state, which includes all his past conditions.
When my b.p is fine and no body pain, i am feeling peace and deepness, even spiritually strong. When i am sick b.p. not in control , no spirituality works , no prays and chanting verses work, only disturbance, anxiety, so i think the balance of chemicals in our body bring good feeling and happiness, during b.p high or low you are totally disturbed, and we feel sadness and anxiety, good health only brings joys, as in our childood and young age, we usually feel happiness , always remember beautiful days of childhood and ignorance innocent period, more knowledge and age bring sadness, pain, anxiety etc. i am religious but reality is my feelings bind me with health and age
Praying and beleaving helps, however, b.p.-regulating medikaments might also be necessary, in order to keep the b.p. in ballance. Prayer and faith keep us continuously in ballance, anyways. Pray for you to remain untroubled, God bless you.
a honest answer ! one can also add basic finances along with health. those who struggle with basic necessities and for money to get basic things dont have the luxury to contemplate. there is no joy in religion or prayer if no one out there can help them survive. i think of the foresaken health wrecked beggars outside a temple who thank god everytime someone gives them a dime. it feels like a miracle to them that someone even cares.
an excellent video,,,,,, for those who find faith and belief as comforting I support and encourage you to hold onto them as long as they serve you. My thought is that these are also a form of distraction, a comforting one, perhaps, but not irrefutable evidence of anything. I like to think that belief and faith are unnecessary and usually are based on some form of fear, often unconscious. Does there have to be purpose and meaning in our lives? Most probably think so. I would question this. Or perhaps it relates more to a definition of these terms. Maybe the meaning and purpose is to do our best to be in each moment and to do our best to learn to love each one and each encounter.....just some thoughts, not beliefs, which I enjoy exploring...
You have expressed my exact thought. Faith is another avoidance tactic. Best to face our oblvion and enjoy life while we have it whole serving others in their struggles.❤ Peace friend. ❤
When we are young our focus is on worldly matters, money, looks, possessions sex. But when you get older you realise that these things are diversions, escape from the hum drum mundane lives that we all live. At 69 I ponder the same questions , what is life’s purpose and how can it just be over when we die. ?
Losing the ones I love is so traumatic for me, I refuse to love again in this world. In the last two months I have lost my last dog and my pet racoon. Now, I am where I should have been all along, this world can not take much more from me. No more attachments. Mark Twain in the Mysterious Stranger notes, we become attached to objects and when we lose them, we lose a bit of our soul and a better understanding of the Buddha's teaching of non-attachment to things of this world comes from knowing that the attachments are meant to drain us of our life force.
Faith is not an empty proposition when it’s real; It changes your state from despair to yaqeen ( divine serenity with truth)…faith shows you devine patterns in life and makes the absurd less absurd. Prayers in faith guide you, give you assurance and help change circumstances where you experience miracle and an unimaginable strength. Thus faith is a state of being not a simple understanding. According to Islam, the aspects of this life are fleeting ( unreal) and a washed out copy of a real life to come. The experience ( of happiness, pleasures and wonders) in this life compared to that of the afterlife is like one drop of water compared to the whole ocean. Quran chapter 29:64: “This life of the world is but a pastime and a game. Lo! the home of the Hereafter - that is Life, if they but knew.” Quran 32:17: “And no soul knows what has been hidden for them of delight for eyes as reward for what they used to work as good deeds [in their earthly life].
I don't believe that everything is destined to end. I do believe that everything is destined to evolve and reinvent itself through natural homeostasis and the intelligence thereof.
Everything are creations. That isn't existence. Being creations, it cannot be forever. Existence is for ever and ever. The nature of creations ends in destructions continuously even after death, except those who are alive.
From the very beginning of this video I answered the question as to the meaning of life. Faith! I watched to the end to see if there was a conclusion to the question. To my surprise, it ended with what I believed. You just have got to simply believe because it answers the fundamental question. It’s not giving up, it’s recognizing that HE does exist. HE presents you with the ability to doubt every possible logical conclusion, and if you reject faith, you’ll never end your search. Just let yourself go, believe, in the face of all humanly logical empty conclusions, and you will have peace. Faith answers the fundamental question … period.
Yes and I beleive faith is all we can do, however I would point out that Faith in itself is not the end, it is the means that will propel you to redemption, enlightenment, awakening...
THE THIRST FOR MEANING. 1. Ignore the problem. But life circumstances will bring you back to the question, however you try to escape it. 2. Take refuge in sense pleasures. The body is finite. The best wine after five glasses becomes unbearable. The senses also have limits, therefore you will be brought back to the initial search for meaning. 3. To give up one's life. It is missing the opportunity you got at birth to reach the light, where you originate. You have interrupted your evolutionary path towards self-realisation. 4. Living in a state of limbo, of spiritual stagnation, no choice, no direction, unsatisfaction, immobility, no redemption. Ultimately even these minds grow to give meaning to their whole experience of stagnation, if they are properly cared for and guided. For me this whole world is meaningful and I am presently living in a magical world of abundance, creativity, diversity. These conditions unfold to prick the consciousness towards elevation to higher realms.
As per my knowledge humans really don't know anything accepting will be best course of action.... So just live life like a play with third person view as you are watching a play of your life.....
We have to ask the question what were you before we were born? Being dead is not an experience, and either is the flow of time. But there can be another awakening, Into someone, or something else. Energy cannot be created or destroyed. Albert Einstein. You are eternal.
The purpose of life is to realize that we do not belong to this material world, but to the spiritual world. In this material world everything is born and in the course of time perishes. We are spiritual beings, divine, eternal, and we cannot find happiness in temporary things. Studying the Veda, and get knowledge.
Yet to me reason would win as it will continuously give challenges to find the meaning of life and not blind faith and become invalid. So may be it's only some activity but mental activity which is the answer.
Q. Why does a child on his own, find so much joy pleasure love playing with a toy or a pet animal? Ans: Coz he's Alone and the toy or pet animal makes him happy...& happy !!❤ Ohh.. I forgot...that child is you + 8 billion, earth + heaven + hell + Universe..... & The Infinity !!
Here's what I believe: all life exists to change states, or another way to put it: "to move energy". That's our only essential purpose. But the states we move to regularly are totally up to us. Once we have enuf food and shelter, why not recognize the "negative states " we've learned to go to from prior life habits, and teach ourselves AND others to move to positive states, that promote free-flowing energy movement in not just ourselves, but everyone we encounter. In so doing we help move energy outwards. If energy gets stuck inside, as it does when our states go negative, that's when we die, little by little. Why , because the stuck energy keeps moving inside ourselves in ways that kill us. Dost had the luck to go to the extraordinary state of "curiosity" to move from his negative states, which is why he was so successful ... until other states overtook him and he succumbed.
Agreed. For the universe _does_ seem to evolve life that _does_ seem to then _want to keep evolving,_ doesn't it? The fact that single celled organisms first came together, and then went on to make all the variety of complex life that we see around us today - everything from Hellebores, to Hamsters, to Humans - gives immediate voice to one of the most confounding issues facing us today. Why, in other words, is it that living things seem to _want_ to live? Edit. It sounds tautological, and it is. But I think it requires an explanation. Why does dead, inanimate, matter come together to create animated matter, and then to continuously evolve that matter, when it is destined only to shortly return to the dust from whence it came? It's a mystery. Wrapped in a riddle. And hidden behind an enigma. To put it quite simply, it doesn't make even the slightest bit of sense.
It only does what is designed to do. You will have to ask that question of it's creator. Most of us know the answer but it must be realized as it will not resonate if given.
Romans 8:19 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. 19 For all creation is waiting eagerly for that future day when God will reveal who his children really are. 19 The created world itself can hardly wait for what's coming next
We're here cuz God is love and love cannot exist in a vacuum. It must give. That's why I define love as selfless commitment, unconditional acceptance & symbiotic union. And...the Lord God fulfilled all things by creating Man in His Image and all things for Man. Thus, He is forever committed to the Man [His darlings]; accepts their continual blunders [as an indulgent Father] and hurts when they hurt, rejoices when they rejoice. ..."in these things doth I delight saith the Lord" in Jeremiah 9:24: ..." I am the Lord Who exercises lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the Lord." Here, of course, we miss the mark. For He made all things according to a "pattern"...and God is the pattern...so...as He made man from Himself, for Himself and looks for His beloved to intelligently choose Him above all things...so to He in His Wisdom made woman from Adam for Adam to be his darling who would willingly choose him above all else. Men, therefore, are to render submission, obedience and nurture to God Who provides everything even as the woman should: Submit Obey Nurture ...her man as a consequence of his provision, protection and power. T-H-I-S is love and the reason we exist. Ipsum cognoscamus, Ipsum diligamus, Et in perfecta unione Essemus cum Eo Qui fecit nos. Haec propositio et sola ratio entis est.

It seems we're all just on stage performing and each act brings on new characters performing the same drama and the previous actors are all gone, never to be seen again....is this what life is all about ?
yes, It feels this is what life is all about
I have had similar struggles throughout my life, and was surprised, that someone as astute, famous and accomplished as Tolstoy pined over the same concerns as I, in my somewhat pathetic existence.
One of the most enlightening videos that I have seen. The voice is amazing too. Very thoughtful and soul-searching.

Agree with ET . Yesterday is gone and tomorrow isn't here. There is only now. Besides all depression comes from the past and all anxiety comes from the future. Focus on the now (the present moment) being the best possible version of yourself that you can be.
From your statement you sound like you have never struggled with either complaint. God Bless you.
That's what the difference between thinkers and common people. Final conclusion is faith. What a common man could see, a thinker could not see it for a life time. God bless Lev Tolstoy. 😇
Finally faith is the answer, the end of the road, but faith in what or faith in who?

Lev Tolstoy , but about his philosophical work
When my mother passed away at 70, my mother in law consoled me that mother is now in the garden of my heart.

Well the final solution he suggested works for people who didn't even think about the question before.

Faith is not an answer either! I've been tormented by these thoughts for so long! I personally think that faith is also one of those four temporary and illusive solutions. Perhaps there is no answer to search for 😢
@@ninanoble8252 have you try to practical budhis meditation at least 30 minutes a day for 30 days ?
With faith comes the realization that as we live in God's work of creation God also experiences his work through us. Once this understanding is established then there is nothing lacking.
Or is it just a matter of searching?!... Thanks so much for sharing!
My question is, “DO we exist?”
“I think, therefore I am,” is actually, “I think, therefore I think I am.”
The answer is simple. Simplicity.
Your soul matters😊
Praying and beleaving helps,
however, b.p.-regulating medikaments might also be necessary, in order to keep the b.p. in ballance.
Prayer and faith keep us continuously in ballance, anyways.
Pray for you to remain untroubled,
God bless you.

a honest answer ! one can also add basic finances along with health. those who struggle with basic necessities and for money to get basic things dont have the luxury to contemplate. there is no joy in religion or prayer if no one out there can help them survive. i think of the foresaken health wrecked beggars outside a temple who thank god everytime someone gives them a dime. it feels like a miracle to them that someone even cares.
an excellent video,,,,,, for those who find faith and belief as comforting I support and encourage you to hold onto them as long as they serve you.
Thank you so much for this profound reflection! 🙏
You have expressed my exact thought. Faith is another avoidance tactic. Best to face our oblvion and enjoy life while we have it whole serving others in their struggles.❤

When we are young our focus is on worldly matters, money, looks, possessions sex. But when you get older you realise that these things are diversions, escape from the hum drum mundane lives that we all live. We are here because in the fullness of interminable time it was possible. Anything that can happen will happen.
And if it happened once, couldn't it happen again?
Losing the ones I love is so traumatic for me, I refuse to love again in this world. In the last two months I have lost my last dog and my pet racoon. Now, I am where I should have been all along, this world can not take much more from me. No more attachments. Mark Twain in the Mysterious Stranger notes, we become attached to objects and when we lose them, we lose a bit of our soul and a better understanding of the Buddha's teaching of non-attachment to things of this world comes from knowing that the attachments are meant to drain us of our life force.

We exist to live because God lives through us.

Quran chapter 29:64:
“This life of the world is but a pastime and a game. Lo! the home of the Hereafter - that is Life, if they but knew.”
Quran 32:17:
“And no soul knows what has been hidden for them of delight for eyes as reward for what they used to work as good deeds [in their earthly life].

Why faith (belief without evidence) when the Truth of our shared reality is always present and available to all?
If you can find your purpose, then you can find what truly matters!
We have to ask the question what were you before we were born?
Being dead is not an experience, and either is the flow of time.
But there can be another awakening, Into someone, or something else.

Life is a test of character.
For the exact same reasons all other life forms exist because they all evolved on a planet
The universe wanted living beings here.😊
We are an example of the many ways that the universe is conscious of and expresses itself.

Why does our world and the universe exist? The answer is simple. We should not just exist, but live in our own unique fashion.
Thank you for this beautiful reflection!
I came to this planet with the purpose of making Rosangela happy 😊
Right now I am going to fourth round
Yes but did you happen to ask the purpose of Rosangela being here?!🤔
The real question is," why does the universe evolve life in the first place?".
Read Gurdjieff Beelzebubs Tales to his Grandson. Illuminating
❤
It only does what is designed to do. You will have to ask that question of it's creator. Most of us know the answer but it must be realized as it will not resonate if given.

We exist to have the possibility of living with Jesus and the heavenly father in their kingdom.
Highly debatable
We are the culmination of stardust
We're here cuz God is love and love cannot exist in a vacuum. It must give. That's why I define love as selfless commitment, unconditional acceptance & symbiotic union.
And...the Lord God fulfilled all things by creating Man in His Image and all things for Man. Thus, He is forever committed to the Man [His darlings]; accepts their continual blunders [as an indulgent Father] and hurts when they hurt, rejoices when they rejoice.
..."in these things doth I delight saith the Lord" in Jeremiah 9:24:
..." I am the Lord Who exercises lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the Lord." Here, of course, we miss the mark.
For He made all things according to a "pattern"...and God is the pattern...so...as He made man from Himself, for Himself and looks for His beloved to intelligently choose Him above all things...so to He in His Wisdom made woman from Adam for Adam to be his darling who would willingly choose him above all else.
Men, therefore, are to render submission, obedience and nurture to God Who provides everything even as the woman should:
Submit
Obey
Nurture
...her man as a consequence of his provision, protection and power. T-H-I-S is love and the reason we exist.
