- The biggest Subnautica mod of them all. Return of the ancients is an up-coming Subnautica mod, adding many new features. This is a showcase video.
The main deal of this mod is adding the extinct gargantuan leviathan skeleton in the lost river, but now it is alive and well in the void and dunes.
Enjoy the video.
Keep in mind, this mod is NOT made by me, This mod is made by the architects of the unknown.
Mods only work on the epic games + steam versions of subnautica, but this mod is not out for the public just yet. When it is finished, everyone will be able to download it for free.

Yeah you don't have to worry about reapers in the dunes, now you have to worry about a gargantuan, man-swallowing leviathan.
There's always a bigger fish.
@@KarlismiSN noooo
@@KarlismiSN oh no, oh no, oh no no o no no
man swallowing isn't quite enough
i'd say leviathan swallowing leviathan would be more fitting
a reaper can easily swallow you, the pov is just terrible in the game
The Gargantuan Leviathan has that, "that's not the worm, that's its tongue..." energy. 😨😨😨
Mm Hive fleets.
What a good referende ma man
@@murk__tt6495 Thanks bro, made it myself. 😂
The fact that I got it even though English Isn't my main language lol

Imagine when the baby garg grew up you’d have your own rideable garg that protects you, that would be sick
Ride? Thing is so huge you could set up camp in it's nostril, ride how 😅?
I'm hoping they introduce a Leviathan that's gigantic but really very tame and friendly to us
@@Hyraladen cough cough sea emperor cough cough
@@Hopeless_Melody89 no, she's old and gone now (no disrespect), we need a new one that's larger and friendly but deadly to other creatures except humans
@@Hyraladen I was referring to the baby ones you can find them around
Imagine having a baby gargantuan as a pet, then be on danger against a reaper and he comes back as a juvenile like "do we have a problem?..."
Your trial of living has now expired. please file your leviathan taxes if you want to extend your warranty of living
@@senatorstevenarmstrong6703 that is criminally hilarious 😂
That's not all gargantuan leviathan's will only take them a whole month to reach their adult size and there's different breeds of the species the Arctic variant has adaptive camouflage but a little smaller well the abyss variant is the largest something for dry environments slither through the sand like a snake well the red back of variant of this particular creature is the rarest because it's perfectly adapted to eat other gargantuan breeds they can split it lower jaw
All brings up this particular creature Can Be Tamed as a baby and they're very powerful allies if they turn adult
@@misterhyde2817 source?
The best way to describe this monster is this: “It’s an abyss with teeth”.
We stared into the abyss, and the abyss stared back with sharp teeth.
Best*
So basically an English bulldog's appetite?
The way the Gargantuan Leviathan moves is so graceful
I mean Yes but also ghost levias they are so majestic it's crazy but they also just MURDER you
They added custom voice lines for the cyclops when using the ion boosters. That's awesome
“The odds of surviving an encounter with an apex-class leviathan are 3,720 to 1-“
“Never tell me the odds!”
"Warning: Death imminent"
“Are you ready to die?”
Having a loyal pet being a baby version of the biggest scariest toughest thing on the entire planet is beyond words.
Absolutely astounding.
The cutscene where it jumps out to grab the sunbeam, it needs like more particle effects with it leaving the water and entering.
The fact this man has the balls to jump into the abyss in a prawn suit to go fight a gargantuan leviathan is incredible
He woke up that day, and chose violence. XD
"Are you ready to die?"
Given that message comes after the PDA announcement and after the audio static (and along with one just seemingly patiently waiting for the Sunbeam to get shot down before lunging at it out of the water), it gives the implication that the Gargantuan Leviathan is not only sentient and capable of telepathic communication like the Sea Emperor, but it *knows* you are there, and it's going to relish taking its sweet time playing with its food. The only thing it wants to know and taunts you with is.... how long can you delay the inevitable?
(PS: I absolutely love its death spiral animation with the way the tentacle mane flows with it!)
I love the idea of it being telepathic, since the only other creature previously powerful enough to do that was the sea emperor, and I don't know about you but this guy looks MUCH more powerful
@@KarlismiSN Oh yeah same here! All the videos I've watched having encounters with the adult Garg Leviathan in the void, it's as awe-inspiring to see as it is spooky having that big giant maw come for you out of the dark. I think it's better that there's no way to even fight this guy either as we have to contend with him instead of the 3 adult ghost leviathans; just see how long you can last before you inevitably have to get back to the crater or die.
Whereas even the Reapers are just little more then hungry animals, you get this guy whose actually intelligent. It kinda makes him the Yang to the Sea Emperor's Yin, with the latter being kindly and benevolent and the former malicious and dangerous. He's at the top of the food chain and it knows it too, lol.
I do hope the mod developers have a little bit more planned for him!
I dont know if I misunderstood but does the pda or the leviathan actually say "are you ready to die?" after it ate the sunbeam? Because I swear to Arceus I couldn't hear it, can you post a time stamp pls?
@@sonicover No, this is happens underwater when you go into the void and encounter the Adult Garg, not the scripted Sunbeam encounter.
@@RandoGrunt I was hoping i could hear it without downloading the mod (because im honestly terrified about it), but thanks so much anyways
In terms of size, the Sea Dragon is to the Garg what the player is to the Reaper...
It really is monstrous
I don’t think that’s accurate my friend
@@rhodamyersparker5006 not perfectly accurate but it gives a good representation of the size.
Its more like what a microorganism is to a sea dragon is how a sea dragon would feel
Nice… now how many stasis rifle shots and knife slashes will it take to kill?
4:28 that actually made me jump
LOL
Boop.
Same here
Me too.
Same
It will be cool if they made that when a baby gargantua is following you, the other gargantua leviathans won’t attack you
ㅇ0ㅇ
I really really really like the idea of garg being sentient enough to actually just play with whatever its hunting after (there was a concept of garg being obviously too big to actually get enough food to survive so it kinda evolved into getting its energy from sun or some shit so that he really doesent need to kill stuff)
15:45
Imagine if this was in the base vanilla game
You’re playing for the first time, and you see the events unfold. You see Sunbeam get shot but not destroyed, then all of a sudden this huge BEAST just comes out of the water and snatches it up, and if that wasn’t bad enough, you see all if not a MAJORITY of this things body
That would make anyone horrified, if not extremely uneasy
The animation is like 10x too fast for something that size though. It's going at like mach 3 here
@@Grintock yeah, it could be a bit slower
But either way, the animation still delivers on making sure you’ll never want to go out that far to the point where you will end up encountering it
Either way, I’d probably just nope out and never touch the water in Subnautica againx lol
It'd also be cool if it affected the water as well
@@Grintock I mean it can keep up with all of your vehicles at top speed so...
"Juveniles can be found in the dunes"
Me looking at the footage of the juvenile: "Excuse me that's a fucking WHAT?!"
PDA: Warning: Death imminent.
Me: You don't say?
Love how it just gives up on protecting you and tells you that the end is nigh
@@KarlismiSN there is no escape from our god, the great gargantuan leviathan the 5th
I'm surprised the Reefback Skeletal remains were added, they don't even imply that the Garg ate them, just, that they play an important role.... awesome :)
I think the goal was to create some mystery, making the player wonder what caused their death, as well as just being an interesting detail.
Seems to be based on a whale fall, as when a giant hulking whale lands on the seafloor its body becomes its own mini-biome of scavengers and anything else that capitalizes on the population density.
Um old age
4:20 man it’s so tiny as a baby. You’d never think such a small thing turns into a kilometers long leviathan eating predator
I love the star wars reference when you first encounter the gargantuan, those were the odds that C3PO calculated for successfully navigating an asteroid field, to which Han responded "Never tell me the odds"
I never actually knew that, thanks for the info!
The cyclops super speed seems like an insanely cool (but buggy) feature. I'm hyped.
I love how the PDA tells you that it can’t do a passive scan in a natural way which simultaneously tells you just how massive this boi is
That new sunbeam death animation is fucking terrifying, imagine that being in the base game but as a rare cutscene.
That’s just a straight up Kaiju. That’s something Godzilla would fight
And lose.
Nop, the garg is way bigger than even kaijus - it's head alone is over 300 feet long, he could fit the majority of monsterverse godzilla's 390 feet body(not his tail though) inside its mouth.
The sea emperor, and maybe sea dragon, are definitively kaiju material though.
@@outsider8683 Godzilla is 390 ft tall not long
@@virgin1792 the garg is just like 10 times as big as godzilla soooooo

I have a feeling that the Gargantuan Levithan isn't extinct.
That enormous roar we sometimes hear from the void? known famously as "The Bloop"?
could very well be an adult Garg passing by; its roar being carried from miles away.
Imagine if the reason it doesn’t usually come to where you play the game is because there isn’t enough food to support itself, and the skull you find of it is one that wandered off-course
If I remember correctly the void is just the slope of a volcano meaning once you reach the bottom it most likely keeps getting deeper meaning it could theoretically be going on for thousand and thousands of miles giving the garg enough space.
@@gladoseon4117 its also implied to be a juvenil, so likely this juvenil didn't leave the creator when it was old enough to venture into the void and as a consequence died of starvation
@@maverickdarkrath4780 no there are juvenile skulls in the caves
i swear my jaw drop for like a solid 30 second when i see that size comparison, holy crap that thing is gigantic
3:31. Oh, that's not so bad.
3:51. Oh, never mind.
Haha that was exactly what I was going for
@@KarlismiSN which one is the real garganthuan leviathan?
@@prister7649 The one at 3:31 is the juvenile, the one at 3:51 is the adult in the void.
@@KarlismiSN holy shit thats a big nope
@@KarlismiSN can you tell whats the difference between them i still never play the game
I love the idea of the gargantuan creature but it would not properly function in the current games for subnautica.Dude head is the size of the whole shallows zone. Unless you expanded the game past the void.
Well, it only spawns in the void so the adult won't be an issue. And yes as far as I understand there will be reason to explore the void
@@KarlismiSN Then I'm down. Always wanted to fear the void more in V.R
@@KarlismiSN i would pissmyself if it roar like a 6,000 sirenhead blowing a haunted trumpet mix with a gooey slime
I was expecting a large splash and wave after the Gargantuan Leviathan ate the Sunbeam.
If it did leave a wave, it would be enough to submerge the entire island you watched from, considering how big the Gargantuan Leviathan is and how fast it fell
@@gladoseon4117 All the more reason to have proper wave physics.
I like how literally nobody messes around with the dead zone and the moment he realizes he reached it he just says “oh.”
Everything looks so well polished and thought out, im really excited to play this mod, however, I really wish once the GL leaps from the ocean to grab the falling ship we could see some kind of wave in the distance, how could something THAT BIG not make a splash, let alone a tidal wave
The sunbeam: HAHA WE PREPARED FOR YOUR BEAM THIS TI- *Wait wtf is that.*
Players : arguing about who is more cute, cuddlefish or hofferfish
Chad players : me and my baby Garg^^
this man has the most confidence to even step foot outside his base
i wanna hear some day the cyclops seconds from exploding say: it's been an honor captain
Return of the Ancients mod: “Where the Reaper becomes the Peeper.”
I love the size comparison when it passes up to the adult it’s just it’s mouth
Anyone noticed how the garg leviathan changes colors based on if it attacks? That's so cool!!!
What developer is like: ah yes, let's make the baby of the biggest threat in Subnautica that ever existed a pet
“Let no joyful voice be heard!”
“Let no man look up at the sky with hope!”
“And let this day be cursed… by we who ready to wake…”
“The Kraken!”
The Kraken would promptly show up and be eaten by the Gargantuan Leviathan
Thank you so much for doing a larger breakdown for the mod contents. A lot of this was more interesting than the leviathan, imo.
Super amazing mod, I can't wait until it's done so normal fans can play it.
Right? Im lucky enough to have access to it but I still can't wait for the full release to see what everyone comes up with as regards to precursor bases and other stuff, for sure will be the biggest mod to come out in this games history.
@@KarlismiSN How do you get access to it?
You need a decent subnautica channel and have to go the the of the ancients discord server and apply thete
@@KarlismiSN Thanks for telling me, I dont really do subnautica videos so I will wait until it comes out.
@@eisleyplaysit7903 The mods got some good progress. It's just mostly polishing and story stuff left to do from what I can see. Hopefully the wait wont be too long!
3:45 - Not gonna lie. This, legit, gave me goosebumps.
3:58 holy crap. Dude could eat the sea dragon in one bite.
Sea dragons are like potato chips to this thing, needs a whole bag of em just to have a snack.
Ancient is the time we are waiting for this mod to release
Remember Duke Nukem Forever? Pepperidge Farm remembers...
I realized something about an hour ago, when I was watching another video about this mod.
When you get that message on your PDA in the Crater Edge, saying that "The odds of surviving an encounter with an Apex-Class Leviathan are 3,720 to 1. Are you certain..."
It cuts off, kinda like it's getting interference, and then switches to a different voice that asks if "You are ready to die?"
I think that was the Gargantuan Leviathan asking you that, but what really scares me the most is that it basically picks up where the PDA left off in the previous question. "The odds of surviving an encounter with an Apex-Class Leviathan are 3,720 to 1. Are you certain... You are ready to die?"
So, not only is this thing a creature that can create shockwaves with just its roar, emit bioelectricity, siphon energy from your vehicles, and eat you in a single bite, but it also has telepathy, and is intelligent, like the goddamn Sea Emperor!
See, this is why I am both dreading _and_ looking forward to the day that this mod is released to the public. This kinda terror is actually really cool, for some reason. I don't know why, but things that are intended to invoke a sense of fear or dread like this absolute _monstrosity_ of a fish, and manage to actually do it well, are really, really cool to me.
this looks so cool, I can not wait till it's out.
I just played like 2 hours of subnautica and I was terrified of the sea creatures, but that gargantuan Leviathan just freaks me out...
They should have made the gargantuan Leviathan be rhe creature you encounter when you reach the outter hounce area. Imagine how terrifying it would be to see this thing come charging at you just to swallow you whole
I am so so so so so excited for literally every part of this, especially the Cyclops speed upgrade
Most of my 22 hours in my world was getting from point A to point B 😭
Thank you so much for showing us all this, I am literally BUZZING with excitement, and EEEEEEEE!
This leviathan lover is very happy, the scale of it blew my mind
the baby gargantuan play animation actually scared the shit out of me
Anyone who says we wouldnt be a threat to the garg needs to think back on every time theyve seen a human freak out over a small insect.
I've been wanting to play Subnautica for a while but after seeing this I'm gonna wait for the mod release in like 3 years
This mod looks awesome, I can't wait to play it. It'll make Subnautica a brand new game. I'll start preparing for many many deaths now (that Gargantuan Leviathan looks dope).
The adult is scary
im not gonna die cuz i have my ultra mega man cyclops invincible creative mode cyclops mod 😲
Nice Star Wars reference with the odds of surviving an encounter
Fantastic mod review
They need to release this damn mod already. I know making mods can be hard, but it's been years since they made the first version.
As someone with thalassophobia, I nearly had a heart attack when I saw the adult Garg..
whoever did the leviathan did a great job. I need to get something like that for my game one day.
“The odds of surviving an encounter with an apex class leviathan is -“
Never tell me the odds
FgZero taking notes from Han Solo.
Me mistaking Gargantuan as first form * oh that’s not so bad, not even bigger than a ghost leviathan *
Sees full size * Oh hell naw *
“The odds are 3720 to 1” nice Star Wars reference!
The odds at the beginning of the video are insanely high for the size and colossal strength of the garg. Might need to add a few zeros to that
Well that ending is genuinely terrifying
more water needs to be displaced when it eats the ship at the end. it would cause a mini tsunami. so it seems a bit off.
It'd be nice if this mod was available to more than only popular RUclipsrs. It's been in closed beta for YEARS.
it was never meant to be revealed how early as it was and the mod itself isn't even close to completion it would ruin the excitement if everyone was able to experience features of the mod bit by bit instead of playing through the full released product when it releases
@@KarlismiSN Except it was, in 2021 the main guy behind it said “release date this friday” and well it never got completed lmao
@@finnsstuffs main guy being?
@@KarlismiSN Idk but if you turn the clock back long enough to when it first got announced he said one week till it released or this friday in an interview
@@finnsstuffs I'm going to assume you're talking about ultravioletmango. He's no longer on the dev team, he revealed the mod much earlier than it was ever meant to be and made false promises largely for his own attention. There's a big document file showing why he was removed, but essentially he's a person who starts hype for no reason, he's also behind the atlas ''mod'' that doesn't actually function and is just code from another mod taken and slapped onto a new model, he doesn't actually know how to develop mods. They removed him from the team for these reasons and nobody who is actually working on the mod said it would release at that time.
Just needing some clarification I'd imagine the baby gargantuan leviathan is like only like a couple hours to a couple days old and the juvenile is like comparably to humans would be like 8 to 16 years old somewhere around that in human time if the gargantuan was a human (although obviously it's probably older than that)
Yeah likely something like that.
4:29 friggin jump scared me
Tbh ,idk why the gargantuan leviathan would consider us a meal cuz we are REALLY small compared to it ,so it would just see us as a useless small piece of flesh
Just wanted to point out that, accordong to the PDA there is a akull in the lost river different from the gargantuar one that says roughly that it belonged go the biggest leviathan ever found, and that would include the gargantuar one
So basically, there was an even bigger leviatha back then....
Imagine if they implemented the Ancient skeleton as well. I’ve always been curious on what people would make from just part of the skeleton, and I feel I’d be terrified of it lol
4:18 this scared the shit out of me
I can't wait to get traumatized once again
*what if you raised a baby one until it reaches adulthood . . .just imagine the power*
Concepts for intro voice lines before a gargantuan leviathan attack:
“Unexpected heat signatures detected, proceed with caution.”
“Warning, apex predator spotted in the area, get back to safe waters as soon as possible.”
“WARNING, apex predator is showing extreme aggression, survival rate has dropped significantly.”
“ *Survival rate has approached zero.* “
"Tis' only a juvenile!"
Imagine the parents coming at you if you ever got near their son again.
14:45 - 15:00 ive noticed that your the only person i can find that has pointed this/fallen reefie out in the mod (other than the wiki for the mod) PLUS apparently there a ghosty skeletons too and again i see few people point this out
Some of these attacks from the gargantuan make it seem like it’s not that big like as much as it’s jaw is fairly narrow I don’t think it’s as narrow for a tiny lil ship to even sit pretty between it’s teeth, like the throat hole ( sorry ) would practically be the size of a cave entrance.
Also as much as there’s sport in playing with food I’d imagine it would have fun with messing with the reapers rather then a lil scooter in the water unless it’s the machinery that peaks it interest.
Watching a mod review for I game I don’t have and most lightly never will.
I recommend trying the game it's amazing
This is the only thing in Subnautica that truly deserves the title of "Leviathan".
