Hello Phil, hope you're well. I'll set up all of the videos in this series in a playlist and send you the link on here. Compo is a slang word for mortar. I think it comes from it being a composition of sand and cement.

Hi! What is the difference between a carpenter and a builder in the UK? In NZ they are virtually the same, although "carpenter" is now an old-fashioned term here and rarely heard these days. Builders here do not do bricklaying either. Cheers, Phil.
I recently slated an entire roof (1500 natural slates), built the brick chimney and did the lead flashing all by myself, as labourer got a job he’d been after for ages with a utility company:-(
adam i would offer to help you out but alas im a retired gynacologists laborour, not too good at mixing compo but a dab hand with a razor and a wet wipe. ill be at the tool fair on thursday so wont get chance to say hello but ill leave you whats left of my peroni on the wall outside, have a good week fella
Watching how much you get done in a day raises an old beef of mine with builders. If you want (let’s say) a pygmy wall around your garden and get a builder in to quote..he’ll suck through his teeth and say “I can do that for 3 grand mate!” However, when you price up the materials (including say 600 bricks at one pound each) you’ll realise it only costs him at most 900 quid so he is on over 2 Grand labour. Watching the rate of brick laying, your wall takes ONE DAY to construct…Add a day for shallow footings and another day for finishing up and you’ll see his rate of labour is like 700 pounds per day. You’d be better off having the wall built by a solicitor, at least in cost per hour terms. Yet, don’t all builder types bleat a modest income. Now, ok, this is all rather generic, not an actual quote, but it is generally ball park what you get. Imma building my own pygmy wall….
You are absolutely correct. I had a plasterer come and quote for my hall, stairs and landing. His materials were say £250… but he quoted me £1800 and said it would take three days. So his labour is £1550…. That’s £500 per day 😂😂😂😂
You know what to do then as you’ve already said, build it yourself and see how you get on. When paying a fixed price, you are paying for an outcome not only the tradespersons time. They also have overheads and other factors which come with running a business which some people don’t appreciate. He /she probably doesn’t earn anything like what you said ever day over a calendar year and if they do, good on them.
