Damn, I remember Ms. Dynamite -- most forgotten track ever! Also, I remember Trolley Snatcha's Remix of Kano's Spaceship....all classics in their own terms.

Nas is the Greatest Emcee of all time, but jr gong got him. Damian Marley is a better all round musician than any pure emcee and that is fine. I saw it for myself watching them performing live in Trinidad in 2011. Damian never misses a word, perfect diction and sounds like studio quality live. As for the album, nas was excellent, but that is expected. Gong was a little better and that is what truly made the album great. He kept up to the a standard we expected from Nas.
I've been saying the same thing for years... Damian is an all round Don. He showed this back on Khaki Suit when he smashed the old school 80's Jamaican DJ'ing style, and later showed the same versatility with Nas Patience is one example, and among other tracks, he absolutely killed "Nah Mean"! The way he rode on that track was crazy. I come from a reggae origin, but fell in love with hip hop in my mid teens, Nas is my boy... But when Damian is ready, he murders most artists out there! it's not to say Nas doesn't, but can he cross over and kill a reggae track, the way Damian crossed over and did?! we've seen that the answer is 'no'!

I can agree with that but to be fair I think the instrumentation and music was catered to Damian's Reggae style more than Nas' boom bap NY style yet I think Nas did a stellar job on the entire project
Nas would probably agree. The collaboration was a beautiful thing, but Damian Marley was the star of the show. K'Naan's verse on Tribal War is incredible though

Distant Relatives is hands down one of my favorite albums.... nas and zilla needs to do a follow up to this ive never seen reggae and hip hop come together so good. tbh nas was good on it but when it came to conscious topics nas held his own but for damian its like listening to a book...these dudes sound good together.
Akala is a well educated and informed person. He is right about how reggae and dancehall being waaaaaay more popular than hip hop in Sub-Saharan Africa.
It isn't a reggae album. I'm Jamaican and I've listen that album at least once a month. Nas was hot on the album but he didn't bring his A game, or maybe Damien is just that dam good. out of the 14 track there was literally two songs with a reggae beat (leaders and ancient people) so you can't call it a reggae album.
If you listen back to that album. Nas didn't really go hard. He made his rhymes less complex. Nas simplified his flow a little so it could mix better with Marley.
Damien carried every song on that album. Saw the distant relatives tour a couple times and nas really doesn't compare to Damian, he is one of the best artists to see live hands down.
It’s a Beautiful well needed collaboration. They both served the People with a Classic Album.. I AM glad that Damian and Nas matched each other’s Musical Genius and both delivered a Special Unique piece of ART 🖼️
Damian Marley is amazing on 'Land Of Promise'. He details Africa having prosperous cities that equal Americas's. The cities he compares with each other are also located in the same region on the continents... straight fire!
People need to listen to more Dancehall and Reggae in particular when Djs like Black Chiney, Champion Squad and others have their mix CDs. Listen to artistes like Kabaka Pyramid, Chronixx new mixtape and Protoje' and you will understand what this man is saying.
No kidding. He'd like rather have that confirmation than care about what's being said on the album. Having said that, Damian Marley was the star of the show, which is no shame to Nas, because he put in great work too.

Damian Marley is the truth and he did outshine Nas on the entire album in my opinion. If you are not familiar with JR Gong's lyrics checkout the track Jah Army.
anyone who's actually listened to the album knows it was close, personally thought throughout the album Nas was better but Damien marley edged him out on maybe 2 songs .... listen to Patience or In His Own Words
I sometimes forget how much songs on that album Nas actually did with D. Marley... Jr Gong is a lyrical genius in his own right no-one can try say otherwise
I remember going to the London leg of that tour at Wembly, is was so rad and the unity was off the train, ppl was passing weed around on the Jubilee line
I think alot of people fail to understand that rap is conversation. the term let me rap to you when used by old heads means let me talk to you. hip hip in essence is conversations recorded when executed properly whether encrypted or direct.
I said the same *EXACT* thing in the comments section of 'Patience' the year it dropped, and cats were telling me I was buggin. Nas being my all time favorite plays a huge part in me objectively agreeing that Junior Gong dropped a far more insightful, and substantially superior verse than Nas. IMO
Anyone just being introduced to Akala's music should check out Fire in the booth, F64, Murder runs the globe, Sun Tzu and Sovereign master. Feel free to add any more
While yes Damien killed it on this album it suited Damien’s style more but both knocked it put the park and elevated each other!! It’s a spiritual deep meaning album A true concept album and artistic masterpiece which is rare these days!! It’s brilliant!!!
Vlad, you should interview Akala again. He has a great book out which talks about Britain and its empire's influences on the situation today in the UK. It's called Natives : Race and class in the ruins of empire. I recommend highly. It's been a while since the last time you spoke to him and I think he is a great speaker.
1 of my favourite albums, he killed him on strong will continue iswel.... But big up akala, im from birmingham. I had plans 2 go 2 the nas n damian marley show but it didnt end up happening.

I LITERALLY was just listening to Distant Relatives* still 🔥🔥Bruh!!
I'm surprised you Said that cause you got a nba youngboy pic
Damian Marley is the truth and he did outshine Nas on the entire album in my opinion. If you are not familiar with JR Gong's lyrics checkout the track Jah Army.
"Edge him out"
Damian Marley to Nas on that album was like Eminem to Jay Z om Renegade. Completely outclassed him
anyone who's actually listened to the album knows it was close, personally thought throughout the album Nas was better but Damien marley edged him out on maybe 2 songs .... listen to Patience or In His Own Words
I have an affinity for people who can backup previous comments or statements they made.
Go listen to patience, that songs powerful
for real... damian marley says some real shit
Saw Naz and DM in New Zealand. I'm a fan of both, especially Marley but that night Nas destroyed it. We were blown away. smoke in the air
Big up Brum!
I sometimes forget how much songs on that album Nas actually did with D. Marley... Jr Gong is a lyrical genius in his own right no-one can try say otherwise
I don't think they out did each other they had different focuses and brought different flavors to every track never saw it has competition
Damian Marley was Better Lyrically on their Collabo CD.. but its not a bad thing Its COOL MON' Yes Mon'
I was at that show in Birmingham... Fire
I remember going to the London leg of that tour at Wembly, is was so rad and the unity was off the train, ppl was passing weed around on the Jubilee line
upload the full interview that would make it so much easier insted of snippets akala is a knowledgeable guy
Vlad we've alredy seen the 1st 3mins. they're from his other clip!
Why we can enjoy the muzik for what it is. They BOTH!! did amazing. Solid album top to bottom. I still have my copy till this day..
uhhhh damien marley did out rap nas tho on distant relatives
It wasn't rap....
Feel free to add any more
Check out lose myself ft josh osha. Not his usual work but a tune and the bars are still good.
Who should we interview next?
Skepta, Ghetts, Kano, Wretch 32 & Big narstie(for the banter)
most of those coming soon...
Lauryn Hill, Sade, Glad is Knight, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Roxanne Shante, Elton John
Nas
AZ
Capone
Coolio
Me
lowkey
Big Interview, great artist!
i could listen to this guy talk for hours. thanks vlad! keep em poppin
Would love a nas & Akala collaboration 🔥💯💥
While yes Damien killed it on this album it suited Damien’s style more but both knocked it put the park and elevated each other!!
It’s a spiritual deep meaning album
A true concept album and artistic masterpiece which is rare these days!!
It’s brilliant!!!
I RESPECT DAMIEN MARLEY PEN GAME. I'M GONNA HAVE TO LISTEN TO THIER ALBUM AGAIN
He said it the energy felt like a cermony on a plantation before an uprising this guy stays in soldier mode
Vlad, you should interview Akala again. He has a great book out which talks about Britain and its empire's influences on the situation today in the UK. It's called Natives : Race and class in the ruins of empire. I recommend highly.
It's been a while since the last time you spoke to him and I think he is a great speaker.
Birmingham never failed. Everything he said was onpoint. THAT SHOW was historical.
1 of my favourite albums, he killed him on strong will continue iswel.... But big up akala, im from birmingham. I had plans 2 go 2 the nas n damian marley show but it didnt end up happening.
His mixed like me I can honestly say as a mixed person myself we will only ever feel complicated within ourselves when we expect both sides of our selves.
I could listen to him talk all day
This guy is the reason I fucks with books again man. But yh, go and hear his FITB part 4. It's absolutely insane. 👍🏽
why did this interview start off with the stuff from the other interview
Agreed, Gong Zilla (Damien) had the top lyrics on that entire album
Already seen the first 3 minutes of the interview from other interviews on from vlad on Akala
Nas is my favorite but Damian did get Nas on a couple of tracks and vice versa. I think Nas got Damian on Leaders.
