He was originally a 5,000m runner & did some 10,000m events when he was young but I believe it was Said Aouita who encouraged him to do the 1,500m & mile & ended up setting world records in the process that still stand today. No doubt he's the greatest middle distance runner ever. EVER.
I knew the score before I even clicked into the video! That's a well scored runner right there. He is probably my favorite runner of all time along with Kenenisa Bekele. Pls do Nick Symmonds at some point.
Seb Coe is the greatest middle-distance runner of all time!! Coe won 2 Olympic Gold Medals in the 1500m and held the world records in the 800m, 1000m, 1500m and the 1 mile! Coe also won 2 Olympic Silver Medals in the 800m!! Had Great Brittan entered Coe in the 1988 Olympics he would've won a total of 3 Gold Medals in the 1500m!! El G only won 1 Olympic Gold Medal in the 1500m and he ran in 3 different Olympic Games!! I rest my case!
@@richardmilliken5651 TRUE but Hicham is the greatest 1.500m athlete ever and is generally a more complete athlete than Seb plus 4 time World Champ and look at the top 10 lists for 1.500m and mile
You did El Guerrouj justice. He’s an absolute legend. 99 is totally an accurate score. Thanks for the great video. I’d love to see a video on Shalane Flanagan, Ryan Hall, Jim Ryun, or Craig Mottrum. Keep up the good work.
as a Moroccan i lost faith on Hicham winning the gold medal in 2004 Olympics!! months prior to the event, he lost badly 1500 m in Rome and finished at 8 seed!! he was criticized by the local media and decided to deliver the shocking news that he suffers from asthma, but still remember challenging everybody that he will win two medals in the Olympics a gold medal in 1500 and no matter what in 5k and yes he is man of his word!!
El Guerrouj might even deserve a 10 for running range. As you said in the video, he won both the 1500m and 5000m at the same Olympics, an accomplishment that only Paavo Nurmi has done before. But unlike Nurmi, he beat Lagat who is the 2nd fastest 1500m runner ever (behind himself), as well as Bekele who set the 5000m world record that year.
Francis Hooton el guerrouj could have broken the 3000m and 5000m world records if he had focused on them in his first and only attempt on the 3000 he ran the second fastest time ever of 7:23, and his first attempt on the 5000 to get a qualifying time for the 2003 world championship he ran 12:50 , the guy was just too good .and he had plans to do so before he decided to retire . his endurance combined with speed was never seen before
El G in interview with bin sport in French said that during the training before 2004 Olympics he run 800M in 1:40S !!, The interview is still available on RUclips, Thanks a lot for the video!
Behind every success there is pain, failure, effort, tears, challenge and never giving up, thats a lesson we learnt from this living LEGEND, thank you for making Morocco know ..
Hicham's country men, Saïd Aouita, is definitely worth analyzing. He carried middle distance running after Coe and before Hicham. Only man in history to run 800m under 1:44, 1500m under 3:30, 3000m under 7:30, and 5000m under 13:00!!! Saïd even ran 10000 in 27:26!!! He broke 6 world records in his career and he also won 44 successive victories in international races ranging from 800m to 10000m in a 26 month period!!! I was a big fan growing up in the 80s!!!
Almost 800m pace. Unbelievable. The pace was slow , his Moroccan colleague didn't rise the pace for him. He was worried from the last 100m Sprint. That why he took the lead and run that crazy 800m which is WR pace in 1500
Mohamed Taha that was not the first time he used that tactic , he ran a similar race in the 1997 world championship running the last 800 around the same time . He didn’t always need a teammate to do the pace for him .
Totally agree. Quality. Was hoping you'd consider doing Noah Ngeny now that we've got him in our scope. Definitely Paul Tergat and Saif Saaeed Shaheen as well please, and keep Evan Jager in your back pocket for when he is older.

Great video series. Almost a different sport, but would be curious about whether you'd consider evaluating trail/ultra runners ... Jim Walmsley has had an astonishing period of dominance in anything < 100 mi
Great video , he also is the second fastest in the 3000m in his first and only 3000 which i believe he could have broken the world record if he had put his mind into it , i also believe he could have broken the 5000m record which he wanted to do but he ended up retiring . I believe he deserved a 100 score knowing that he could have run up to the 10000 meter but his focus was on the 1500m , if he had won the Olympic gold in the 1500m early we could have seen him in other distances but that gold medal kept him in the 1500
My favorite runner of all time and I agree with the 99 score but I think range deserves a 10 doubling the 15 and 5K at the Olympics but losing back to back Olympics before 04 as a huge favorite both times has to push the championship racing score down to a 9
He certainly deserve this score, i have to add that he score 7:23 in the 3000m second best all time record in his first and only run in this distance so i think he could break this recird easly if he runned more races. Also i regret that he only race two time 5000m but he got 2 medals.so he could did more in this distance
In terms of running range, he also ran a number of cross country races as a teenager, although his success was not as outstanding as his later track work. But then, he was much younger and hadn't yet found his mature strength.
I think that the fact If El G fall in Atlanta 1996 helped to make his career great, Exemple a Moroccan runner named Molay Brahim Boutayeb at the of 21 he won gold medal 10000M in Seoul Olympics 1988 making him one the youngest athletes after he became sloppy and lacked of motivations, Would you please make a video about Said Aouita in analysing the greats, Thanks for doing this man I appreciate
Yes Elliot was amazing, never lost a race, won the Olympic 1500 by 20 meters, and was never pushed He was 22 when he retired not even at his peak. Gerrouj was pushed for the 1500 Olympic gold and world record by Bernard Lagat. I would have loved to see Gerrouj and Elliot compete in the same conditions. It is hard to compare different eras. Look at Jesse Owen's, his times may not seem that fast but when you consider that there were no starting blocks, dirt tracks, different nutrition and training, his times become exceptional. What makes Gerrouj so great is the number and durration of his records.
In the 2004 1500m final Jim Ruyn would have beat him by a good 7 meter in the last 300 m. Jim run it at 38.1 second while El Guerrouj at 39.1 after they oth ran the 1200 at 2:55.
@@jakubgomola2119, No, it is not. Jim at age of 19 would have beat El Guerrouj in the man 1500m final. Jim just would have them ran out in the last lap, just like he did it to Peter Snell when he was 17 years old.
A great runner and role model, but I don't agree with the score I would argue the mental toughness with relation to the tactical awareness, as he himself stated in an interview that failing the first 2 olympics really hurt him, but I suppose that coming back on the third one to win the double can change the toughness back to 10 (though not the awareness). HOWEVER, I don't think he deserves a 10 for running range. He is the king of the mile, and a great 3/5 km runner as well, but he never ventured beyond those distances. IMHO, that's the same as saying that Bolt deserves a 10 for running range (and he was also an accomplished 400m runner) see the video from 1:45 ruclips.net/video/j8vx0MxU9L0/видео.html
Avi Adato I only gave him a 9 for running range. In fact, I used the exact same logic you just did to come to my conclusion. He had potential, but his career didn’t include a wide enough range to be a 10. Thanks for watching!
I still think that failing 2 consecutive olympics should either deduct at least a point from either the tactical awareness, or championship races. The gut was undefeated for so long, yet managed to be upset at the greatest stage of them all.
Avi Adato I see your point, and you’re not wrong, he did fail in 1996 and 2000. But I think context is important: in 1996, he fell, which was completely beyond his control. In 2000, he placed 2nd, which by all accounts is quite impressive even though he was expected to take the gold. And in terms of world championships, the positives the come from his literal dominance over the 1500 for such a long time is why I gave him a 10. I do wonder what other people think on this, but I went with 10 because...well, I kinda just wanted to. I’d love to take a poll and see what everyone thinks. Thanks for your input, I’ll give it some thought.
