you should do a video about said aouita, one of the rare athletes who ran all races from 800m to 5000m, has been world/olympic champion/medalist in 800 1500 and 5000, has held WR in 1500 1mile 2000 3000 and 5000, was even medalist in 3000 steeple at the mediterranean games, and is still all-time top 30 in 1000m, 1500m, 1mile, 2000m, 3000m, 2miles.
Ngeny and Komen were both shockingly good as well as unfortunately short-lived in their careers, but the world records they set continue to live to this day (in 2021): Ngeny still holds the 1000m WR from 1999 and Komen the 3000m WR from 1996!
Komen also holds the 2 mile record; a distance that is rarely run. What is remarkable is that he is the only person to run under 8 minutes and he did it two times.
How is El G "largely considered" to be the greatest mile runner? He IS the greatest mile runner. That's not an opinion, it's a fact! He holds the world record! How could you possibly claim he isn't the greatest?
Thanks to your channel, I know that the 1500/Mile records of El Guerrouj are both related to the same pacer / rabbit: Noah Ngeny. As you said, although he failed breaking the records for himself, he contributed to these 2 hard to beat historical records by Hicham.
Wow! What a story. Still cannot see him beating El Guerroj again, even had he not been dropped by the Kenyans but he would have been at the Moroccans shoulder. El Guerroj just got more determined after the Sydney shock. Incidentally the great Australian 1500m Olympic champion of 1960, Herb Elliot, also retired early aged just 24 and incredibly was never beaten over the 1500m or the mile.
A really great video, worth the watch. Might add that this period coincided with a dark moment in Kenya's athletic management team history. Some athletes retired in frustration and others relocated to other countries. Needless to say, if Bernand Lagat hadn't gone to U.S. ,he would have been forgotten an year or two later. The depth of Kenyan talent is deep. That's why most athlete's spans are very short unless one is too good or relocates to other countries.
