@themcubes I think you never run 2 miles at that intensity to say it as if it was easy to run 30s more. If he could have ran 30s more at that speed it means he would have been able to run the same distance maybe 3 or 5s faster
Wow. I knew nothing about him. What an astonishing runner. I guess without his history of poverty we would never have seen this kind of talent. How could he just give it up! So baffling 😱
indeed! His motivation for the bag and competition just made this athlete an animal! I'm pretty much His Trainings was not anywhere close to current athletes.
Great video, but he didn't immediately disappear after Feb 98. What is interesting is that he spent the majority of that years Golden League season focusing on the 1,500, arguably avoiding Gebrselassie. In '99 he returned to his better suited longer distances with some success. From memory he just lost out to Hissou over 5,000 in well under 13 minutes, but later outsprinted both he and Tergat in another fast 5,000 race mid season. However, in the Seville World Championships he only managed 5th when defending his title, and in 2000 he fell away further, and unfortunately missed qualification for the Sydney Olympics. By the way, that earlier 1997 World Championship wasn't merely a 13:07 run, for it contained back to back FIFTY-EIGHT second laps from Komen, mid-race, which was close to his most astonishing performance.
This record after 28 years is now broken and belongs to Norway i hope Komen congratulated his successor and has a smile on his face that he is alive knowing his impossible record is finally broken.
Ya, he was fun to watch. His 3k records might last a while. If he'd run another 200ish meters in that outdoors 3k the 2 mile record would be closer to 7:50.
They are still talking about what Roger Bannister did. He was a household name when I was growing up. Days later the 4 minute mile was broken again, and then again, and again. Now there is a long list of sub 3:50 guys BUT a Sub 8 minute 2 mile!!! Bannister left no mark on the record books. He was just the first, great. But this guy is one of greatest runners of all time and almost no one knows his name. Tragic!
I would like to see Cheptegei attempt a two mile world record after this Olympic year. He ran 3.1 miles at 4:03 pace. It's very possible he could become the second man ever under 8.
2:50, one of his great rivals, Salah Hissou. Does anyone have any of the Komen-Hissou 5,000 metre battles (of which there were many) from '96-99 that they could upload? Especially Hissou's 12:50.80 from Rome (2nd fastest ever at the time).
Haile Gebrselassie, Nourredine Morceli, Hicham El Guerrouj and Daniel Komen... I idolised them all. They were super athletes who must have had incredible cardiovascular systems... mighty hearts and incredible lungs, not to forget powerful long legs and a long stride lengths. Forget the sprinters (Usain Bolt, Michael Johnson and Carl Lewis excepted), these were true Gods of the track. Their world record runs thrilled me. Most especially Guerroujs 1500m and Komens 3000m. Someone yet to be born or bawling in a pram WILL break these incredible records... someday ! Until then, I'll enjoy the reruns on video of their incredible world records.
He ran for survival of his life and family for a better life .once he archive his goal then he stopped .'' stopped when you are done not when you are tired '' .
Whether the fruit juice allegations are true or not, I do believe that Komen was the most talented distance runner ever. He did not max out his potential on the track the way Geb or KB did. He had the potential to run a 1235 5k, and who knows what he could have done in the 10k...
You should make an updated video to this. Funny cos "they" have stated the indoor was the mount everest of records, but it is that outdoor record that has stood.
You're welcome. The guy was an absolute beast and his times deserve more appreciation. I've always found him as such a mystical athlete so a mini documentary was necessary. Thanks for watching!
Great video! Though I must say isn’t epo in the question here? Insanely fast times out of nowhere. Great decline quickly... this was epo era where detection wasn’t possible when done correctly ex: Tour de France 1990s (it was ridiculous). Long distance runners (especially in Africa where access is very easy) starting using epo and running insane times that are just starting to be approached...
99.999% sure this is the case. This was just before the first EPO tests were coming in, so it’s the sweet spot of availability, evidence of effectiveness/relative safety, competition being almost all on it, and a slight fight back by the authorities
The only athlete who could broke the legendary 3000m world record if he focused more in this distance was the other legend Hicham Elguerouj, actually he ran the outdoor 3000m just once and set the second fastest time in history 3 seconds behind komen
@cyoungrun1 All names u mentioned tried several times and didnt succeed to went under 7.25 And why r u comparing pace of different distances, how dumb my opinion if i say Bolt will set an hour 7 minutes due to his 9.58s in 100m so it doesnt make sense

@@randomdude239 are you kidding? He ran before testing for epo! You haven't paid any attention to the dozens of positives , long bans from Kenya in last few years, even months! It's such a shame that Komen didn't get to run in the 1996 Olympics. I'm certain he would've crushed the field in the 5000m. And when the 2000 Olympics was held, he was already past his prime (at only 24 years old). His merits are a gold medal and a 5th place from the world championships (in 1997 and 1999). But what really stands out are his times/records, and his defeat of Haile. He's also the fastest Kenyans BY FAR in the 3k, 2 miles, and 5k. In the 3000 he's 6.51 seconds ahead of the 2nd fastest Kenyan (Kiptanui), in the 2 miles he's 7.87 seconds ahead of the 2nd fastest Kenyan (Koech), and in the 5000m he's 6.79 seconds ahead of the 2nd fastest Kenyan (Kipchoge). Komen was made of something else. One of the all-time G.O.A.T.s in track and field history.
Yes he probably would have won in Atlanta, but if he had competed there he maybe wouldn't have been so fresh afterwards as he was when he didn't participate. That's a good summation of Komens career as a senior. He also the won the world junior championships at 5 and 10.000m in -94. And was 2nd at the world junior cross country championships in -94.
Kenya is known for producing gifted talents such that it becomes so difficult for one to defend his or her title at the global events.. Komen knew this fact and decided to make hay while the sun was shining bright..rather than wait to be upstaged at the olympics or world championships and loose the bonuses that comes with being a record holder or one having the worlds fastest time..he made sure that he ran away with all that was in the offing as fast as he could..that was a good strategy
Komen est une supernova qui illuminera l'espace encore longtemps, sinon pour toujours... Aucun athlète, parmi les meilleurs du monde n'est en mesure d'approcher les records de l'immense Daniel Komen !

The beats are really awesome. Here I am saying it again. Just awesome.
if he continued for an extra 218m on his 3000m wr, his projected 2 mile time was 7:52...
madness
If usain Bolt had continued to run for 42,095km after his world record on 100m dash he would have smashed marathon world record
@@alexandregranger7379 one is 420 times longer, the other is 30 seconds
@themcubes I think you never run 2 miles at that intensity to say it as if it was easy to run 30s more.
If he could have ran 30s more at that speed it means he would have been able to run the same distance maybe 3 or 5s faster
Alexandre GRANGER
But HE COULD have run faster. ...
Had he gotten better pacemakers.
Oh yeah. Nobody could pace for him because he’s too fast.
Ha, ya amazing stuff
Grande atleta grandes recordes , obrigado por compartilhar esse vídeo 🙌
Stellar content as always.
Thanks. Daniel Komen will not soon be forgotten.
The record for the 3000m is like the records on the 100m(for both gender) - nearly impossible to break
He was an absolute joy to watch. Beautiful calm running style, yet he was doing some serious pace!
When the world needed him most, he vanished
amritbanga bruh didn’t you go to bothell
He isnt the avatar!!
Keanu Reeves ya lmao who are u
Then the fire nation atracked
..and everything change
He came
He conquered
He left
Damn!
he broke world records just for his family. loved it. great story.
Thanks for the beautiful video
Thanks for this bit of knowledge!
Thanks for the awesome education you're providing here!
One of the greatest! pity, a very short career
The only man to break the all mighty LEGEND
Great video, very well put together!
This record after 28 years is now broken and belongs to Norway i hope Komen congratulated his successor and has a smile on his face that he is alive knowing his impossible record is finally broken.
The greatest talent ever on 3000m and 5000m.
Ya, he was fun to watch. His 3k records might last a while. If he'd run another 200ish meters in that outdoors 3k the 2 mile record would be closer to 7:50.
Yess that's what I think about every time I watch his 3k races. It's INSANE
Keep in mind that would be 3200m not 2 miles
@@olivermichell3953 so at that pace 7:52ish. Still a lot faster than his 7:58
@@cakej1 if I were to guess I would say 7:56-7:57 given the extra 210 ish meters plus the slight pace adjustment for the extra distance. But who knows
Anyone here after Jakob took down Komen’s final standing WR in the 3k?
Was looking for this
Do you think you could do a video about the greatest rivalries in the history of athletics?
Just running 2 laps under 60 seconds is a feat itself!
Truely amazing video. Amazing story :I still need to investigate if he was on EPO as there were no tests for EPO at the time
what a beast, i had no idea
Me neither.
Yeah with kangaroo shoes and wavelight technology
@@waterproof4403 LMFAO and fresh pacers every 400m
2:50, one of his great rivals, Salah Hissou. Does anyone have any of the Komen-Hissou 5,000 metre battles (of which there were many) from '96-99 that they could upload? Especially Hissou's 12:50.80 from Rome (2nd fastest ever at the time).
“May never be broken” I like how you caught yourself there lol
This is Greatest STRIKE OF ALL TIME. GOAT of Middle Distance
Thanks for a really great video :) excellent narration
Whether the fruit juice allegations are true or not, I do believe that Komen was the most talented distance runner ever. He did not max out his potential on the track the way Geb or KB did. He had the potential to run a 1235 5k, and who knows what he could have done in the 10k...
You should make an updated video to this.
Funny cos "they" have stated the indoor was the mount everest of records, but it is that outdoor record that has stood.
Thank you TRP. Very few Kenyans know about KOMEN.
You're welcome. The guy was an absolute beast and his times deserve more appreciation. I've always found him as such a mystical athlete so a mini documentary was necessary. Thanks for watching!
He my favorite athlete In track and field.
Coming to think of it, seems like the 1990s was a decade for middle distance running
Outstanding I don’t even know what to say
Great video! Though I must say isn’t epo in the question here? Insanely fast times out of nowhere. Great decline quickly... this was epo era where detection wasn’t possible when done correctly ex: Tour de France 1990s (it was ridiculous). Long distance runners (especially in Africa where access is very easy) starting using epo and running insane times that are just starting to be approached...
pablo gonzalez Agreed. I am also a sceptic of Daniel Komen and his ‘unbreakable’ records..
It’s possible
Especially in africa where access is very easy? 😂😂😂 what are you smoking
99.999% sure this is the case. This was just before the first EPO tests were coming in, so it’s the sweet spot of availability, evidence of effectiveness/relative safety, competition being almost all on it, and a slight fight back by the authorities
Palblo gonzalez... guess who is still breaking world records to this day?... Africans
The only athlete who could broke the legendary 3000m world record if he focused more in this distance was the other legend Hicham Elguerouj, actually he ran the outdoor 3000m just once and set the second fastest time in history 3 seconds behind komen
@cyoungrun1
All names u mentioned tried several times and didnt succeed to went under 7.25
And why r u comparing pace of different distances, how dumb my opinion if i say Bolt will set an hour 7 minutes due to his 9.58s in 100m so it doesnt make sense
Our unsung hero.
Proud to be training with his coach ...this time sprints
Running to survive. That was his power...
Nostalgia of the epo years. This man seemed more a lab experiment than an athlete
Proof? He never tested positive for any banned substance. Kenyans are known for their freak genetics when it comes to long distance running. “The juice” runs naturally in their veins.
@@randomdude239 are you kidding? He ran before testing for epo! You haven't paid any attention to the dozens of positives , long bans from Kenya in last few years, even months! Currently there are 21 Kenyan Middle/Long distance runners serving bans , mainly for epo, that shows the recklesness of their doping system. Those are mainly in at competition tests! Imagine if the WADA testers were allowed to appear a ttheir "training camps" in Kenya/Ethiopia. You wouldn't have a sport and all the white guys would be just as fast for a change! Oh I said 21....that's beginning with the letter K only.
Alberto and N L, you guys are just haters. Get off the man's cock. And stop being jealous because you are both fatasses that tire quickly when walking 25 to 50 ft. Somehow y'all manage to get an enormous amount of energy when walking to the refrigerator or going to a fast food joint. If you guys are mad that the man has a happy married life is not gay, get over it. I'm certain there are some gay men out there that digs fatties. Get in shape and beat the man's record and become rich and famous. Then you guys can have all the spotlight. Kuhpeesh?
Hicham El Gerrouj best ever middle distance track athlete
Bekele best ever long distance track athlete
komen best ever middle-to-long distance track athlete

Moral of the story... money is the best motivator
His motivation for money was never to buy a Ferrari or a Rolex. Money to be able provide his family a better life.
Nah.
Pround kenyan ever
Daniel komen him self corrected those who thought that his indoor 3000m world record was the mount Everest of long distance running when he said it was not... Instead he said it was the 3000m outdoor world record that up to today stands at 7:20.67
That was very well put together.Im not even into running but I apreicate a genous.
Edit;shit, ironic I spelt bloody genious wrong.
I certainly aint one
Greatest middle distance runner EVER....! PERIOD.
I believe they call that “explosive diarrhea” XD
Great video, thanks for that.
@@magnuslundberg9675 kenyas greatest runner
For real
Holy shiet the zoom in on his face at 1:27, look at the jaundice in his eyes 😂 My man's been juicin
No
Hey, I just revisited this video which I watched years ago and WOW! Ingebrigtsen 7:17:55, 7:54.10 and Lamecha Girma 7:23.81! Guess we were all wrong : )
05:53 Komen's 2 mile race on July 14, 1996 was in Lappeenranta, Finland, not in Sweden.
World recrods are all up for grabs, but there is one Olympic record that might never be broken; Bob Beamon's 29.2 feet long jump.
Beamons record was broken by Mike Powell in 1991
At 9:03 it's 4:53, because the split was 4:53,18 min at 2'000 m.
There shall never be another Daniel komen in athletics.going by his achievements, it could only be derived from his first name, endurance, discipline and all good n bad things from his bible model,a man after records in athletics.
THE RECORD STILL STANDS
And will continue stand.
@@AnthonyMcqueen1987 not the indoor 3k anymore lol
