In manuscript I33 are multiple stances, with pre-bind extended buckler arms(stronger versions with both weapons together forming kind of a triangle and weaker version in terms of block sturdiness with separated arms). Thereby taking away larger solid angles of the opponents field of view, so shouldnt in principle the buckler be better suited against stabs? What is the reasoning in keeping the buckler this close? Maybe because of the rapier's guard the function of protecting the sword hand becomes obsolete? Kind regards
It's my understanding that the hand-cover is not only obsoleted by complex hand protection, but that same hand protection actively hinders the use of both. It's much easier to move a small cross-guard alongside a buckler than say a cup-hilt. My preference to the dagger against the thrust is in the dynamic of the blade and cross working in tandem to control the opposing blade. Daggers are better suited to catching and manipulating the blade whereas the typical buckler is not well equipped to managing that point. There are bucklers designed to catch points though.
