  • Something magical is happening to the landscape at the moment- late summer is bringing a beautiful violet haze over the fields as the heather or lavender (depending on where you live) spreads its blossoms to the horizon on a sea of perfect purple.
I am watching the heather staring to bloom where I live and it made me want to get my favourite purple mixed media tools out and look at them. It occurred to me that you might like to come along too so here is the result!
Purple is not the first colour that you think of when painting landscapes but it really is so versatile and it finishes the sketch off- like the ideal sprinkling of sugar on a cake!

Aw thank you- and you are even wearing the right colour uniform! I felt the same way while I was swatching them. I kept thinking that I need to get this or that colour/ medium out and use it more! Happy sketching! Deb xx

I love your videos and conversation so much that I watch your videos on normal speed. Lol 😂 I'm certainly not criticizing other creators, but I am old and life is short!

Oh wow! I have that mars black and had no idea it did that! Loved this video- swatching videos are so helpful so thanks! It's serendipitous that you are talking about the purple field flowers- I live in the US in the Hudson Valley, and our fields are flush with purple flowers right now and I was just thinking this weekend that I should get some down on paper.

That is great! Normally when we see something on here we haven't got it so that was a real win! Purple seems to be everywhere at the moment. I really followed my instincts on making this video and I am so glad that i did. It is quite timely. Happy sketching! Deb xx

Brilliant. The idea of swatching all the media in a color range actually simplifies things when picking an art tool. I do have a Windsor&Newton Lavender gouache. For some reason

Thank you so very much! It does, doesn't it! Sometimes we think of a colour as just a colour but in reality it is a long spectrum which can be stretched. Well the reason may be that you were destined to paint some purple flowers in a field- the universe has spoken! ;-) Deb xx

Fun idea. So many great shadow variations in these hues. Ha, and love the “rant”. Too many videos saying “right and wrong” ways to use a medium. Fortunately, artists, like you, proving there are few limitations!

Thank you so much! Those muted purples are simply gorgeous. Hah, yep, I felt that I had to throw my hat into the ring and have a bit of a rant. Deb xx

i paint in watercolors and also quite a bit with gouache .. when people ask me why they aren't getting the " effect" they want, or why the colors are so muddy, or constantly reactivating the previous layer , that is when i always respond that it always depends on what you're going for .. if you are going for thicker applications , or wondering why it's too watery etc , i respond and give my experience and a few tips.. i agree that there is no right or wrong way to use any medium , but when someone is asking for specific help or tips , then i think it is warranted to give some tips so they can achieve whatever it is they're going for .. just my humble opinion 😁😁Norakag , here 👍👍👍

Hi Nora! Absolutely right- helping a struggling artist when they have a question and a goal is what all need to do. I have a bit of a bee in my bonnet about people inventing problems to make people feel as though they are failing. Rant over I promise :D. There are so many ways to use everything. But yes, if a person has a specific question, it is the easiest thing in the world to help them. Deb xx

Not a purple, nor a pink person here, but I do love muted colours. I used to absolutely hate dioxasine ( spelling?) purple until doing some colour mixing, and I loved , what mixing it with other colours did.
Just returned from a trip to the countryside, prevailing tones around here are toffee brown, green and ochre, with some splashes of willowherb on the side. And I saw a stripy field today! I don't know what they are growing there, but it was the first time I saw something like that, stripes of sepia and yellow ochre, quite close to each other. I wonder, if I venture into the mountains, will they be purple at this time of the year... Looks to me, next trip is sorted! 😅
Thank you for the loveliest video and even more so for the next one. You know, happens to me all the time, accidentally dropping into art shops... and then spending any amount of time in them... and before going to see new town, firstly checking,if they have an art shop there. 😂
Very curious to see what have you found 😊

I am not usually either- until I see some in a landscape and start grinding my teeth down to the bone because I sense another 'accidental' trip to the art shop :D. Haha- I do that thing about seeing what art shops are in the area before going. You are my tribe! I am expecting the delivery any day now so there will be an unboxing next Monday all going well. See you there! Deb xx

On a different subject, but as a beginner wanting to use sketchebooks, I would be interested to know which sketchbooks you use/recommend - eg hot press, cold press, mixed media etc and the sizes too. Just found your channel and enjoying it very much.

    • @debbievongrabler-crozier2646

Hi Tricia! Sure- I love a smooth hot pressed paper that will take wet media. I use both wet and dry so it is important that the paper does not buckle when you use it. A great mid priced range is the Hahnemühle Nostalgie range of sketchbooks. The smooth paper is suitable for all media and it can take layers. When you buy, always check that it says that is is suitable for wet media. You can use dry media (coloured pencils and so on) on pretty much anything. A good quality product will always say. Hope that helps! Deb xx
