Non fui, fui, non-sum, non-curo. The Epicurean epitaph. “I was not, I was, I am not, I don’t care”. Epicurus apparently said the day before he died ‘I am in great pain but tomorrow I won’t be’ or words to that effect. Great stuff by the way, the Epicurean way.
Great video mate. Death itself is not to be feared in old age (Jung talks about accepting both life as a young person and death as an old person) but if you are just beginning to live, it surely is a struggle to accept it.
Thanks for the video! I’m starting The Nature of Things while struggling with the fear of death- getting some insight into what I’ll be reading will help me read through it with better understanding.
Thanks for this! Concise and clear. So I guess Lucretius is who Philip Larkin was addressing in his poem “Aubade”, calling these arguments “specious stuff”… as though we can clear up this fear of death on some level, but not completely. Like we can convince our minds but not our hearts. I like these rational arguments though, for my mind. And for my heart I can just find things to vibe with its fear like songs by The Smiths and Larkin’s poems. Thanks again :)
Yes, you didn't exist before you were born, but we know that consciousnesses (of all the living sentient beings alive then) *did* exist then. And so they are the experiences that were going on at that time. It isn't like you were in a black void all that time, somehow impeding experience. No. You didn't exist. There's only what *does* exist - and so your consciousness was preceded by one of the consciousnesses that *was* going on at that point in time. This is what will also be going on after you no longer exist once again: Will sentient beings be alive after you die? Yes. So then your consciousness's end will be followed by one of those consciousnesses, because those will be the only experiences that will be going on at that point in time.

According to this guys logic is that if you can’t remember it then it didn’t happen. He can’t conceive of the idea that the only existence possible is that which you remember. Example: You were born. You can’t remember it so it didn’t happen. Example: You went to Yosemite park when you were 2 years old. You are now a 46 year drunk who watched reruns of Seinfeld everyday. You can’t remember your Yosemite trip and your mom brings it up over the phone. You yell at her and call her a liar. You tell her that you did not exist when you were two years old because you can’t remember it. But actually there are ways to recovering memory. Your Yosemite trip is fully there in your memory fully intact with full perceptions. Man is just too dull, too much in a drink like stupor to remember things. This is actually the state of man in this planet at this time.
Type of content I crave. Thanks for the videos, saves me listening to hours of philosophy podcasts or reading stuff I don't enjoy. Keep it up buddy.

Very true, maybe itd be actually beneficial to look at death as a sorta 'hurry up and get living' kinda way while you're young.

This was so well done and bite-sized for a student studying philosophy. Thank you and keep making more content!

Sleep is death but not really. When you die, you just go to sleep but forever.
