    This is an excerpt from Big Rocks & Long Props Vol.2 DVD. I was flying my Experimental Maule known as Bushwacker. This airplane served me well for over a decade until my accident in 2014 in Alaska. I landed this airplane in some places that a Super Cub would not go during that time.
    The airplane is rebuilt now with a new all black paint job and now known as Bushwacker 2.0

    I went on a Polar Bear hunt in Alaska with this guide when I flew C-130's up there, and he had purchased one of the first Maule's to be used in Alaska. And, he knocked off one of the main gear out on the ice cap just a day or two before I arrived...the ice moved and the plane was lost for while. It's a long story....
    Bill and Lorene Ellis were outfitters for the entire state of Alaska in the mid 60's. From polar bears to dall sheep he guided clients for all manner of Alaskan wild life. He was also one of the early Bush Pilots and established many of the landing sites still used to this day in the Wrangell Mountains.

    Your "landing zones" would probably have the flying cowboys knees shaking like tuning forks at the thought of dropping into these tight tree and rock infested not to mention the squirrly winds on these spots you stick your plane into!
    And no disrespect ment to the Flying Cowboys skills!!! I enjoy their videos too and wish I was flying those types of planes too!
    They're just usually located in more open desert country rather than the woods of Oregon, at least that's where it looks like you're flying.
    Used to fly paragliders when I was a younger man so have a tiny bit of experience with that kind of flying, and understand the desire to push the edges of those skills anyone who loves this type of activity works hard to obtain!
    I always dreamed of flying planes, with the instruments, and mechanical aspects of aviation, took a few flying lessons but never did get my license, hmmm odd. Guess I didn't want to bad enough to keep pouring money I didn't have into it.
    But I sure do enjoy watching those of you who do! Stay safe and thanks for sharing your great experiences!!!

    Unfortunately I’m just an armchair pilot now. I got my license back in 1980. I only accumulated 125 hours before having to give it up. At that point in my life I couldn’t justify the expense. Now it’s way out of reach. I still feel lucky to have fulfilled a childhood dream. I still carry my license it in my wallet.

      I was in your situation, until I bought my Mini-Max Eros last year for $3,500. It costs me $15 per hour to fly. Closed cockpit, and cabin heat to boot! It is an experimental, requiring that license, but not a medical. I added an EFIS, and an ADS-B transponder. Now, I can go anywhere that any other airplane can go. I added two belly tanks, giving it an endurance of 5 hours. I have flown it over the Cascade mountains, as well as down the Olympic Peninsula. It is not the fastest, but then, that was not the point. Flying affordably, was the goal.

      @@mauleguy Absolutelty! The takeoff and landing distances are phenomenal. It’s easy to see how much cushion those tires and your tail wheel provide. That’s got to be a whole lot of fun.
      Quick short story: back in 1977 a friend and I drove to Alaska from NJ. Back then the AlCan Highway was a pretty rough ride. One rainy, foggy afternoon we were driving north through the Yukon when we happened upon a Super Cub parked on the side of the highway. This was a first, of course. The pilot said the mountains were socked in, preventing him from getting to his destination, so he landed on the highway, pushed it to the side, and set up a tent for an overnight stay. He gave us a note with his name, N number, and flight plan details. He asked if we could drop off the info in Whitehorse and have them inform the necessary parties of his whereabouts and to cancel his flight plan. The person in Whitehorse looked at the note, shook her head, and said “I hope he knows that he’s not going to be able to fly out of there when the weather clears. They’ll have to put his plane on a truck.” My first taste of aviation in the great northwest! I still have his note.

  • @AV8R_1
    @AV8R_1 3 года назад

    Not a new pilot here by any stretch, but a new super cub pilot looking to possibly finding more interesting places to go. Just curious how you learn to judge the length of a Potential spot. Are you using familiar things like trees as a visual reference to the size of the Spot?

    • @mauleguy
      @mauleguy  3 года назад +3

      Great question. You have to have lots of experience to build on. Don't rush it... Learn by doing and building on each experience. Find bigger places with two way approaches where you can go around if you need to. Drag a place first and run your tires down it to check and see how long and how rough it is. Lots to know so start with the easy. After you land a spot get out and walk it and see how much area you used. See how long it takes to get airborne and clear obstacles.

    How much weight beyond those balls of steel can that plane carry!

    • @mauleguy
      @mauleguy  3 года назад

      Empty weight of that airplane was 1325 gross weight 2500 so with me in the airplane and full fuel (42 gallons) I still could put a little over 750 lbs in the airplane... I am not sure how to calculate the balls of steel so I included them in my weight of 160lbs. :))

    Why do you always cut away from the cockpit view for all the landings ??

    • @mauleguy
      @mauleguy  3 года назад

      Not sure what you mean (in terms of what you would like to see)this footage came from a 2 hour long dvd and this is just one segment. I am not sure if these are typical, I think I tried to change it up for interesting shots.

      @@mauleguy A great video and great flying. I just thought it would have been nice to see a couple of landings from the cockpit view instead of cutting away to the outside view all the time. cheers

      I agree , from the ground it looked some what safe but the few shots down from cock pit on a approach made me realise how special the pilot is. Thanks for great video.

    Paint yr plane red or orange so they can spot it in case of a crash, they’ll never see it like that.
