@@kevinhill242 I've heard from Dad and a couple others that these little short-wing, short-coupled Pipers tend to really drop when the power is cut on landing approaches. Not much of a glider like their counterpart Cessnas.
Love it. Miss it. Maybe 25 yrs back already, had 5812d out of Grant Miichigan.
This brings back so, so, many, fond memories!!!!
Tripacers have a unique classic beauty to them.
Southbridge MA! Nice video, brought back a lot of memories. Back in the nineties, I was taking lessons at Spencer Airport- Skyhawk 560Z. I will forever remember that time and my first solo (s).

I learned the basics in a Tri-Pacer. My Dad had one in the mid-50's. I missed it when he upgraded to a V-35B Bonanza. While in college in the '70's I had a friend with a Colt. Just a Tri-Pacer with a name change. He used to let me fly it. I was his A&P mechanic.
The Tri-pacer sure is a dream to fly! The bonanza must have been a blast!
I had a Colt also. The colt had no flaps.

My dad had an identical Tri-Pacer he flew out of Michigan in the late 60's. It swallowed a valve over Sudbury Ontario, but got them to the airport safe.
glad they made it down safe, short wing pipers don't like to glide like a c172 does!
Had 5 different tri pacers, converted 2 to 22/20s, good old planes. Eddie Trimmer is the super pacer man in Willow Alaska, 180hp, extended flaps, fuselage, and wings, 2 18 gal tanks each wing, cub tail feathers. They are a monster performer.
That does sound like a monster performer. When I was living in alaska I saw a few on floats and I’ve always wanted to get this converted over!
First general aviation flight was in one of these. 1hr 15 minutes from Winnipeg to Grand Forks. What an experience for 14 year old many years ago. Just cemented in me i wanted to fly.
Brought me back to the late 60s when I use to fly around with dad in his tripper. Nice flight bro 👍😎✌

I also had a 55 tripacer. N2959P. back in 1972, 90 hrs SMOH, new cover and paint. Original interior. I love her. Paid $4000.00 but had to sell her one year later for $4500. I rented airplanes after that for another year. 5 years later I became a helicopter pilot, and retired with 10,000 hrs. never flew fixed wing again. However I missed that trypacer !!
Love the curved rear window of the earlier PA22's. I have three, but they're all 56 models and newer. Oh, yeah, they're not the slowest airplane around, but they're not exactly SR71s, either.
Yes, the one we flew down to here in from NYC also had that hyperbolic curved rear cabin window. Recall us cruising along at about 110-115mph, flying the airways down our Eastern Seaboard..What an exerience! The only other Piper aircraft I flew in as a r. seat passenger was an Apache, also out of LaGuardia, about 1962..
But still achieve the joy of flight so nothing to complain about.

I remember my dad showing us that plane which when in a stall situation it could appear you were still climbing. Kind of a stable stall optical illusion.
Definitely a different stall than what most people are used to in a 172!
Nice aircraft. Got hooked on flying in one long time ago. Used to fit 4 big guys in it and land on beaches, unprepared runways, virtually anywhere. Still lives on in Australia as serial 22-4510. Was never mine.
4 big guys is pushing it to the limit, but sure is some fun!
I am also a pilot of significant mass, how comfortable is the cabin solo? And with a pax or two? I've been interested in the short wing pipers for awhile now. Never got a chance to fly one tho.
I’m 6’2” and I’m a big guy all around. The cabin solo is very comfortable. I find I have a lot of leg room. I do have a hand brake instead of toe brakes so I’m sure this allows for more leg room. I’ve only ever carried 1 pax at a time as the back seats are quite small and uncomfortable. I’m sure I could replace the seats and it would make things better, but the leg room in the back is small. I’m sure if you had kids they would fit fine in the back, but for now it’s my go to storage area.

Remember these being imported to the UK through my local airfield when I was a youngster. If it still carries its original registration any Piper with a G-AP??? or G-AR??? registration through Kidlington. Happy days.

My A&P/IA found a direct replacement for my overhead light dome lens this last annual.

..Ill keep this short..My very first time up in any airplane was in Oct 1955, when my dad, a corporate pilot flying Twin Beech 18s out of NYC/LaGuardia, borrowed a '54 Tri-Pacer w/ the 135hp 4-cyl Lycoming engine, to fly from N.Y. down here to Philadelphia, MS to visit his relatives on his badly needed vacation! We were pulled out of school for 2 wks. Was,one of the coolest, memorable, educational experiences I ever had! Recall him operating a metal crank in the head panel betw the front seats..he told me that was the elevator trim tab operating crank. Had no rudder pedal toe brakes, but a s-shaped stick lever under the l. side instrument panel, that actuated the little main gear brakes. I was 6 yrs old, bro was 5, Mom & Dad in late 30's.Slow, noisy airplane. Reeked of 87oct avgas! Never flew in one since. Flew, learned, piloted, did time in Cessna 152s, 172s till I quit flying in the 1980's. That's my long/short story!! Thnx!

I use an exterior ball-head mount from nflightcam! it attaches to the landing light bracket on the wing.

I once rode "right seat" in a Tri-Pacer on a flight where we covered exactly 281 "air miles" in exactly 1 hour 55 minutes! Of course we had a bit of help from a tail wind !
So, not actually as "Slow" as you might think!

Very nice job. Impressed with your taking advantage of the sunlight and great choices for the 360. Good work. One of the first planes I ever rode in was a TP. I was about 13. I now fly a 46 Ercoupe.

It is awesome. Windows open. Cruise at 106 and 4 GPH. Mine has been totally restored with every STC available other than rudder which I refuse to do. I’ve flown every JP airplane out there when working, but this is JUST fun! I love it. Mine is in Army Air Corp colors, with custom noseart by the famous John Stahr. Can send a photo if you want. I think I share similar performance with the TP actually. We have some Tripacers on field here as well. A good dependable and solid airplane.

Enjoyed the video, I have the same plane and i was wondering what camera yuo use and how do you mount it? i am wanting to record some of my flights
I use the NFlight exterior ball head mount, which I attach into the light bracket on the wing! Works like a charm and you can play around with the angles. I use a GoPro hero 8 to film with, and with the camera turned sideways for that angle I have never had an issue with bugs getting on the lens. Hope that helps you!

I had a friend with a tripacer and if I could buy a plane again that’s what it would be. 4 people into ungodly short strips and out again. Not fast but the fun of flying is the journey!

You haven’t flown slow until you’ve flown an Aeronca Chief. 45 hp will barely get you aloft. After that, my dads Colt was Secretariat.

Not only was it slow but it had a glide ratio of a rock. I know because of being in one when the engine quit after a very short altitude gain. I guess not high enough to turn around, just straight forward into a ravine bank. I survived but the instructor did not.
MY parents owned a C-140, my dad a second one later in life, and neither was fond of the Tripacer for some reason, something about how it handled. It may simply have been a Ford versus Chevy thing, I don't know.
I would take a pacer over a 172 any day of the week. Stop at the fuel pump. There will always be someone wanting to chat. Pull
Up in a 172 and your asked what club you belong to?
This and the colt were the toughest student planes.
Back in the day one of these cost about 3 grand.
What makes the nose wheel rotate in reverse while in flight...
The starter on mine does that, too.

Had 2 both 150 hp, nothing slow about either one...my opinion is that it is an affordable airplane.
Love to see how you have your camera attached to the wing outside of the strut?
It's a bracket that attaches to the landing light! Gives a better view of the plane than if I had it attached to the strut.

It will do anything a Skyhawk will.
It's really not all that slow. The aircraft manual true airspeed chart shows 132 Kts TAS at 7000 feet. I have found that is pretty accurate when flying my Tri Pacer.
Certainly not slow at all. It’s just a title to grab your attention.

It looks like the nose is slightly raised during straight and level flight. This will bleed off a lot of speed. Initial twsting revealed 77 MPH, Once I got things straightened out I got 107 MPH Nominal cruise. ...But I'm a Piddler!
