Once airborne wheels or floats make little difference, but on the water the work load increases. Remember you have no brakes so docking can be challenging if there is any significant wind. There is a guy at Lake Hood Alaska making a fortune repairing damaged floats and he gets 6 months holiday every year.
You just proved it. We are all just kids in grown up bodies. Thank you for another outstanding video. I know you were feeling inadequate. Can I just say you are the exception not the rule great flying. Sir.
I really appreciate your retrospective storytelling. It provides wisdom to future aviators. Living in the Pacific Northwest, people always ask if my plane has floats or if I want to fly floats. It only took one trip with an outfitter friend with a Husky on floats for me to realize that I'm a wheels type of guy. The workload only increases when the floats are in the water! My respect to the float pilots and early pioneers!
I think if you have experience with floats like anything else it becomes just another great resource. We have so little float access where I live, fueling and storage makes it really less than a great tool. If I lived in Alaska I would have floats for sure.
I wish as a teenager I would have found flying! My neighbor growing up was a professional bush pilot in AK and I really regret not taking advantage of the knowledge he had. He liked me and I really think I could have gotten an apprenticeship with him and damn what a world that would have been for me…
What an airplane! That babe gets off like an angel hell bent for the heavens. Those Hail Mary stories were a little unsettling, but entertaining, thanks to they barely made it out from becoming total disasters. Humbling experiences like that are good for our health.
Control freak.....nahhhh ! Great adventures always have some type of adversity to overcome. I'm one of those guys who got a float rating and haven't been in a float plane since, 21 years ago. I need to change that. I did put float fittings on my Bearhawk Patrol fuselage when I built it. Thanks for the video.
The real frontier is not just Alaska, its the mental expansion that occurs from realizing, you could have done real damage or killed yourself(if not others), but because of small factors of skill and quick wits, called upon at a critical instance...you survived! :) I am still counting on being able to fly the country in a small plane to experience all the wonders, even if it kills me. Somehow there is more dignity in that, than never trying and reflecting being an old man in a home with loaded shorts.
Great stories (I had my head in my hands on at least one point) and I'm sure many a floatplane pilot (I'm not one) has had similar experiences. Thanks for sharing - although not the bit about the night time visitors !!!
Well, now I know we’re brothers from another mother LOL!! Animals tend to be attracted to me too....Same age as well. BTW I’d definitely fly with you. Your humility is greater than your ability and friend, what I’ve seen of your ability is pretty damn good!!! Thank you again for sharing!!!
I agree with you on just getting in a aircraft with anyone because it’s not the ride you taken is the experience that cost a lot to look at before you say yes to anything including Flying
I really can't wait to get into float flying. I didn't weld float fittings on mine but I have a scout I'm piecing together that I think I'll dedicate to floats
Probably only around 30. I put some time on a Turbine Maule, that was fun. I also few a Wilga for a few hours before the engine quit and I had to dead sticked on to the tundra in Alaska a few years back (not so fun). Fuel line fitting to the carb broke and it quit about the time I cleared a 100 foot bank on take off. I could not make it back to water, it was on straight floats.
This is what Float Plane is flying all about to go places yours eyes have never seen and Looking at the Creation that our God has given us to enjoy his Beauty and I never thought getting a float plane rating would be worth it but now it is :
Come fly floats with me in Alaska, I can show you all the bad things I can think of for you to avoid that happened to me over almost 2 decades of flying floats for a living in AK. 😁 Sounds like you found a couple...
Is there any common opinion whether aluminum covered aircraft are better or worse than fabric covered for float operations on both salt and/or fresh water?
I've been watching this for so many times. Awesome!
We need more videos.
As of today, I decided that that's exactly what I want to do when I grow up. It looks so awesome!!
As the saying goes, Just do it!

Thank you. Yes inadequate is a good description.
Awesome footage. The experience you shared of the two incidents you faced was well recieved. Thanks and fly safe.
Thank you.

I really enjoyed that video, awsome stuff. I appreciate you sharing mistakes and giving tips, lots to learn from.
Great, glad to help with my mistakes. I would like to save everyone from making all the ones I have made over the years.

The story is every bit as good as the video, and the video is good.
What a great life!!! Awesome video and memories!!!
Stunning visuals, slick production. It was mesmerizing. This is NatGeo level. Enjoying your experiences vicariously.

Thanks for coming
I have a 1946 7ccm c90-8 on floats and ski's. It works
Excellent
what exactly do you gain bumping up the angle of incidence on a cub fuselage ?
Awesome adventure. Thank you for sharing. How many float plane hours do you have now?
Probably only around 30. I put some time on a Turbine Maule, that was fun. @@mauleguy Holy crap! That was interesting I'll bet...how much damage to the plane? Glad you got out of that whole.

I might just do that, where are you out of.
@@mauleguy out of Wasilla/Palmer area. We’ve actually met a few years back at Valdez, I think 2007 or maybe? Can’t remember exactly.
My backyard... did you do some low river stuff near squamish or was that a different river system?
Not sure, I don't know your area well enough. I had to go to Google Earth to figure out where we were at so long ago.
@@mauleguy fair enough! let me know if you ever venture back up this way.
Tell me about the lodge you referred to...owned by Paul???

@@mauleguy thanks!!!

Salt water is bad for anything, either way it is not going to be easy on an airplane
❤👍
Which engine in this super cub?
Lycoming O-320 with 10-1 pistons
I know Bobby personally
Subsribed. But man come on, more action videos next time with more live audio.
If your watching this you know paul
