Found this wonderful podcast in a search for Hannah Gadsby - now I'm completely hooked on The Guilty Feminist!
I'm not familiar with the children's author they discuss, but I have a story about my own daughter's bedtime stories. I'd loved the Black Cauldren/Taran Wanderer series when I was growing up, but the young hero Taran is a boy and he eventually joins up with this wonderful brave adventurous girl who was born to be a high priestess but managed to escape with minor help from Taran. He invites her back to the farm where he lives and is the Head Pig-keeper (nothing romantic or off-color here - they're both just children) and... she basically becomes the cook and housekeeper. Just gut-wrenching.
So I wanted to read this series to my daughter, but without the whole sub-text of brave heroic boys become heroes and brave heroic girls become household servants. So we (both parents) carefully read the entire series to her with Taran as a girl. It was tricky to avoid slipping up night after night, always catching and transforming every "he" and "his", but we pulled it off! So then it just became a story of these two girls' adventures, with one girl being more of the clueless and thoughtless wannabe swashbuckling type who would never wear a dress, and the other girl being more inclined to being a homemaker with pretty jewelry, although obviously every bit as feisty and adventurous as her friend. So the whole stark difference was cast in the light of being a preference instead of an arbitrarily imposed life sentence of household drudgery.

Hannah is such an impressive speaker. I could listen to her talk time and again. She is so educated, eloquent and insightful. For what it’s worth, she is also physically attractive. As she says her face is perfectly symmetrical which is a sign of beauty. (My face is not at all symmetrical!)

why can't George just be a girl who has boyish traits, she doesn't have to be transgender

Like most people, I know lots of former Georges. They’re women.

Firstly, I ADORE your show!!! Secondly, thank you for putting it on RUclips, where I was able to find it!!! You really are covering tremendously important ground, in terms of awareness, politics, emotional health, and the realities of life on Gaia at this (insert your choice of descriptor phrase here: ....) time in herstory. You are reaching many people out here in the "random-sphere" who weren't even aware of your work before now; so THANK YOU!!!
On a side note, though, I can't help commenting that the Jehovah's Witness version of a fantasy future, while disturbing and laughable on many levels, doesn't actually sound that bad to me....
Don't get me wrong, I have no use for Jehovah, as he pretty much takes the credit for the Patriarchy as we know and endure it... (at least he is the one that all of the misogynists and hate-profiteers between the Indus Valley in the east, and the mouth of the Columbia River in the west, claim as the justification for all of their murderously homophobic, xenophobic, and women-despising habits, deeds, and attitudes, (#canceljehovah)) Basically, it isn't about the "Jeh-hoser"! However, I can't shake the thought that the whole "fruit-sharing, multicultural, eternal vegan with no babies trip doesn't necessarily sound all that bad to me. I wouldn't mind being eternally in my prime, and totally unexpected to bear offspring... I mean, it's either a setup for the most awesome gay eternity ever (my preference) or a consequence-free love-fest for all the straight folk! Hell, I've witnessed enough births firsthand and taken care of enough pregnant people to be totally fine with THAT process coming to an end! Wouldn't be so terrible to vegan if everybody was in love and nobody had morning sickness or had to change a midnight diaper! Sincerely, --N

Is this complaining because she's privileged?
