    Your intro almost made me cry. I've been watching your channel for 2 days straight. I'm half Puerto Rican and my grandparents from PR helped raise me but now as an adult I don't have them around anymore to be able to help anchor me to my heritage. The area I live in has very little diversity - not even one Hispanic grocery store around. I'm one of those people you spoke about who will need to build their own traditions and connections to their past...food is a wonderful way to do that. Thank you very much for your videos.

    Girl, same! I'm half Puerto Rican and half black. I married a Puerto Rican military man and we have moved all over. You do have to make a family of your friends, neighbors, and church family to survive. The worst part about moving around is not being able to find some of our traditional culinary products and food. Most places think Hispanic food refers to Mexican food related products, which is very different from our food. Thank you for sharing your knowledge of Pasteles making with us!

    I love that you take the time to explain the cultural significance behind the food as well. My grandma got sick this past year and even though I was able to learn basic dishes from her like tostones and arroz con gandules, I was sad that there was no one else in my family who could help me learn more about my culture through my love of cooking. Today I found this channel and have watched every video because now I have another boricua to learn from. Thank you for re-igniting my curiosity about puerto rican food and please don’t stop making videos!

    I am putting my Name in the pot for Next year 2024 in advance. I miss this from way way back in the 1960's my sister in law Mother would be at my parents house cooking and cutting and mixing for day's. Get out and Stay our of the Kitchen Greg was the call to me. But I miss the smell of all things Puerto Rican style food. Yes I could stick my head out the window and have the same smell from the neighborhood, but being in the house with that cooking was special. ✌👍

      There's nothing like your whole neighborhood smelling of the food from different cultures. I miss that about the Bronx during the holidays.

    We just had our pastele party last weekend! Myself, Mom, sister and my daughter have our annual holiday tradition down pat. Mom makes the meat and the rest of us hand grate all the vegetables. Mom puts the masa down, sister adds meat, my daughter folds and I tie them up. We made about 76 this year! We could use a food processor but the texture is just not the same, besides, that’s how my Abuela taught us. We also made enough to get us through until Three Kings Day!

    Yes! our pasteles ancestors come and haunt us each year😄. Most people think only Spaniards were the colonizers...but Italians, Dutch, French among others took the boat ride too. How do we know this to be true?...many PRicans have last names from them countries and many PRicans look like them as well. So maybe they also added their touch to our dishes.

      Truly, but there’s a reason we speak Spanish and not Dutch, Italian, or French. I’m grateful for my cultures, but I can’t deny the history. There were so many people who left influences on our island. You’re so right.

    I love it!! Our family don’t use banana leafs. My sister took over family tradition in Pasteles making after my mother.

    Hi why you hate Goya brand? I do pasteles i never knew that you can add batatas . You learn something new every day. I like the way you explain everything crystal clear

      I just don't think they're as great a brand as everyone else, I guess. I've found smaller brands that have better quality products, so I choose to use them.
      And yes, batata is a family thing. We add it to soften the masa without watering it down. Thank you for watching! I'm glad you found it helpful!

      I actually talk about why I don’t add them in my masa in the mass episode, sorry I’m trying to get it up. It make them hard, but if that’s how your family does it, continue to honor them ❤️

    Mm. I haven't had pastelitos in years... all of my PR fam have moved too far away. I think, now, I wanna try making them myself, for the 1st time, now. I so want to see how good they would turn out.
    Thank you for posting a lot more now this past year! I've been looking for channels specifically dedicated to Puerto Rican cuisine. I'm ¼ Puerto Rican, from my mom's side & she isn't really into cooking Puerto Rican food, except for arroz con pollo.
    I grew up in a church that has had quite a few different Puerto Rican families. One of whom we were very close to when I was in elementary & middle school. One of the girls, Dez, we were particularly close to always make different versions every year with her sis. Her dad would make a ginormous Puerto Rican turkey dinner for Thanksgiving, with arroz con granules, baked yams, & a turkey made with sofrito & butter under the turkey skin, & he would use all the leftovers to make his signature turkey dinner pastelitos. I never got to try them cuz they'd be gone before I could get out from the car. Dez would steal 7 yuntes all for herself, they were that good... I mean, I guess they were good, but I never knew. 😆 (aw, I miss them all)

    It's incredibly fascinating how the Taino learned from the Aztec/Inca of basically boiling/steaming masa (whether it be yucca, corn, whatever) in banana or corn leaves/husks with filings of whatever you choose.
    You find this same thing all over the Caribbean in the islands of Haiti, Jamaica, Cuba , Trinidad with different names like Duckanoo, Doukounou, Pasteles, Tamales.

      Bananas actually came from the east, not from the west. So it was more likely that Arawaks/Tainos learned that method from the Africans who brought over the tradition of steaming their foods in banana leaves. We don't steam foods in corn husks in PR.

    I stopped using Taro in pasteles, don't need it, I made them without it, can't tell the difference in taste and its to expensive.

      This is my personal recipe and I can tell the difference in texture when I leave it out, but use whatever works for you.

      I hate it because it’s just not that great. Brand loyalty is very prevalent amongst our people, but I’ve found other brands that are better at a lower price or making it myself is the best option for me. They’re not all that great

    Not true. Tamales are also wrapped in banana leaves. Mexican tamales are wrapped in corn husks.

      Yes, some tamales are also wrapped in banana leaves. As I said, most of the world wraps their foods in banana leaves

      I can name a bunch of Mexican tamales wrapped in banana leaves as well as avocado leaves, corn leaves, avocado leaves, heliconia leaves etc. Almost all of Southern and Central Mexico has types of tamales wrapped with banana leaves. Many counties that make tamales have varieties that are wrapped with both banana and corn husks.

      Also you can find tamales de yuca, platano verde and camote in Mexico. Probably in other countries as well.

    "You hate this brand". YIKES! Completely woke and in line with the MSM narrative. GOYA is a latin success story. All family owned. Employs over 10,000 and donates money to worthy causes and contributes product in times of natural disasters and need across the world. And they have been doing so through ALL Administrations. YES beyond political parties. They employ over 10,000 and are a HUGE PRIDE for latino success in the USA. Educate yourself on their history. Was interested in your videos but now you're canceled.

One of the biggest success stories in the USA and one of the most charitable families through the world. Look up their history. Time to start giving these woke activist a taste of their own medicine.
