Thank you for the review keep up the great reviews. I have the 6'8". Amazed at how much smaller it feels under foot. Very easy Duck Diving not chunky feeling at all. You can definitley up your volume and not sacrifice performance for anyone wondering. For a a true do all board small mushy waves to overhead i would recomend sizing up to 7'0". 6'8" feels more sized for decent somewhat decent waves to very good waves much like a shortboard.

Spot on review, I’ve been lucky enough to get a 6’8” before its release in the volcanic and it’s been my go to for the last few months. Very similar to the mid 6, which I also have in 7’ and 7’6. It’s neck and neck with the 7’. My favorite fin setup is the KS twin with the two twin trailers as a high bred quad-twin mash up. Magical board in almost all conditions.
Glad you agree with the review and thr Mid 6 comparison! Would love to compare the ibolic with the volcanic too, it’s going to be interesting to see how the ibolic goes long term durability wise though. How do you feel with the 6’8 - would you want any extra length? Might have to try the twin setup soon!
@@StokedForTravel thanks for the reply, it will be interesting to see how long the volcanic lasts but one thing is for sure, it’s been crazy durable so far. I love having the confidence that other friends of mine can hop on it without too much stress that they’ll damage it somehow. I’ve actually been sizing down not up and I have my sights on either a 6’4 SBoss or 6’2” Dominator 2. Since I have a 7’6” mid 6 also, I’m currently overstocked with mid lengths. Luckily they’re all crazy fun, no excuses not to get wet on the daily. Boss Up is a perfect one board for travel. I have to flip coins which to take out between it and the mid6…a good problem to have.

@@BDalzell1 the paddle power and glide into various types of waves is one of my favorite things about both boards. Coming from shortboards, most mid-lengths are gonna feel like you're cheating catching waves. You gotta stay humble and considerate. I also love going back to my shortboards too because I feel the bigger board helps with better habits in technique.
I've loved it so much than I've now also got my hands on an S Boss to test out as well! Such a fun board and has been my go to for the last few weeks since getting back in the water! Looking forward to hearing what you think of it too!

@@elden17 I personally haven't gotten the S Boss, surfed it twice on demo days but the waves sucked, closed out and another day where it was way too big to get any real sense of the board. I am going to borrow the Boss up, 6'6 version very soon. excited to test that.

Hard to choose between the boss up 7'2 and the sunday 7'0.... My 47 y.o and my stiff back think about the sunday... But the boss up look so versatile !! 🤯
I would say your style or surfing and fin setup will have a bit influence on this one. Sunday is super cruisey but now only available in the twin fin option. Boss Up you can surf more aggressively and has the 5 fin setup option. I would also check out the Skindog Ova as an option as well, can handle a large range of conditions but is more forgiving than the Boss Up I’d say
Stoked they helped you out! Height/weight wise you’re in between myself and Adam so the 7’2 would go no worries, but if you want more glide and small wave fun the 7’4 would also be a good shout

No worries, glad you found it useful! If you're used to the Rarest Bird the Boss Up has a very similar outline so that would be a super easy transition as would the Seaside and Beyond from your Seaside. I would say it'll come down a lot to the waves you're looking to ride on it and what you like under your feet. MS and BU both offer a variety of fin setups, whilst the SSB is quad only, so keep that in mind as well. Given the volume in your Seaside you could potentially size up those boards to 7'0 as well if you're looking to ride them in smaller conditions as well. I hope that helps a bit!
Very good review - as are all the ones I've watched of yours...thinking of getting a 6'6" - 6'8" odd mid-length (going from a 6'2 and 6'3 JS & Chilli shortboard after 25+ years) and was wondering which of the Chilli Mid Strength, the JS El Baron and this Slater Boss Up might be the best move-up from a shortboard (rather than say a step down from a mal)...and which would have the better rocker for hollower days...thanks

Solid review, just subscribed! I'm having trouble deciding between the BU & the SSB. I've surfed for over 20 years living in places like the Carribean, Southern California, and Hawaii. In my prime I'd consider myself an advanced surfer, but now I'm in my late 40's and land-locked in Texas so I'd downgrade my status to an intermediate/experienced surfer. I stay in pretty good shape by paddling in place in our pool using an exercise band. My surfing is limited to week long surfcations in places like California and Costa Rica. I stand 6'1 and weigh 150 pounds. Tall & lanky, light & nimble on my feet, and more of a front footed surfer. Given this information would you recommend the 6'10/7'0 BU or the 6'8/7'0 SSB for the handful of trips I get to take each year?
How does it compare to the seaside and beyond? In terms of glide, wave range, cruiseyness etc. I can definitely rip turns on my boards, but I alwasy enjoy a bit of narrow stance high-line action when on a midlength.
It’s certainly a different feel on the BU from the SSB and I felt the SSB was slightly more cruisey and allowed a bit more high line flow. Turning and performance on the BU is a bit better though. Both are heaps fun, so it’ll really depend if you want sharper turns and like the feel of a rounded on tail over a more fish-esque tail like the SSB. I’d say the SSB also has an edge in smaller, mushier conditions too

Personally I feel in the smaller sizes this board acts a bit more as a step up rather than a mid length so it really depends on how you want to surf it, what waves and your surf level too. Smaller will turn tighter and surf easier too to bottom whilst longer will have more paddle power and glide. If you’re on a 6’0 mashup I’d say longer would be a bit better, unless you’re just hunting for a more performance based shortboard or step up to compliment it

I have a question, I’m pretty new to surfing and recently bought a second hand board l, it’s a 6’11 x 20 with a pointed nose and a fish tail, I’m wondering if this is considered a midlength and will be easy to use in smaller to mid waves or if it’s a gun board?

Sooooo Chris help. I did a naughty. I ordered this in a 6’6” as a kinda step up travel board rather than a mid length. I am 6’4” 83kg but advanced upper intermediate surfer having surfed for 20 years. You think I messed up? Haven’t received it yet
I’d say if that’s what you’ve ordered it for the 6’6 will also go well too - what are you riding as your daily as it’s a tough call without knowing that! Personally for me I ride longer stuff most of the time (9’1 performance longboards mainly!) so the 7’2 made most sense. That being said it does mean I can’t get it on a plane very easily!haha!

I've been looking for a board to take out when it gets 5 to 6ft. Something with loads of glide and paddle for an early roll in but I can still (just about) duck dive at 75kg. Its between this and the CI Mid. Would love your opinion on which one would be best for the early roll in. Thanks
I'd say that the Boss Up is probably going to be the better option in that size surf - nose is nice and pulled in so I found it surprisingly easy to punch through on a duck dive for the volume and it glides in super easy!
@@99jic still pretty well, but v Helium or Thunderbolt it's certainly not as durable in my experience. I think the Volcanic would be the go if I was to grab another
No offence but it seems as though even the most absolute seasoned pros struggle to demonstrate high performance surfing and almost struggle to shred this board (maybe because they’re so use to much shorter boards?). For example watch the demos on the s-boss to the boss-up and it’s night and day with how ease surfers get waves on the s-boss while looking awkward on the boss up. I’ve also noticed a LOT of these boards on marketplace even though they were only recently released.

Personally I really enjoy this board but I did make a conscious decision to size it slightly bigger to take full advantage of it as a proper performance mid length and as someone who longboards a lot I'm also used to bigger boards under my feet. I agree with you in the fact I think it's a lot of rail line for a lot of people if they're not used to it, but I also think that it would be quite easy for people to mis-size this board and use it in the wrong conditions as well. I think ideally this board needs to be sized up in the 7'0+ range or in slightly shorter versions as a "big boy" shortboard if that makes sense. Personally I haven't tested out the 6'8 yet but it does sound like it will fit with your height and weight nicely. I'm 185cm and 85kg and love the 7'2 - personally I think upsizing this board will suit a lot of people as it turns like a much smaller board but you gain a heap extra paddle power. So even the 6'10 or 7'0 are worth checking out, although it depends what board you're currently riding too
The name is kinda giving it away. It‘s a stepup. Speed-control bottom contours, not speed generating. Definitely not a mid length glider. But calling it a mid length is en vogue.
I’d say it certainly felt more performance mid length than step up. Agreed it’s not a small grove lot wave mid length glider, but it certainly generates a lot of speed. If you go for the smaller sizes it does act more like a step up, whilst the longer length are more versatile - really depends on what gap you need it to fill and what length you go with 🤙
