Agreed. I remember playing it at an old guitar shop. Made me buy a p bass as a backup to my jazz. Wish I would have just bought this one. Didn't expect it to disappear so fast.
@@bapt_andthebassesthese Chinese-made tier of Squiers were very much comparable to MIM and MIJ Fenders, in my opinion. I don’t see much of these Freeman signatures on the used market, I guess people are just reluctant to sell them.
Yeah, I'm part of a couple of bass communinties and this bass is sought after by Rancid and non Rancid fans alike, widely recognised as a fantastic bass that punches well above it's price.
I gotta say, I love watching your videos. I'm not even a bass player (Guitar since 14) but I've always been blown away by your skill since I first heard Rancid (fan since '93)! My biggest takeaway I think has been realizing just how integral the bass truly is after growing up listening to music where the bass hadn't been really pushed to the forefront as much. Even though I'm a guitar player, you've been a pretty big influence on my playing as well. Love ya Matt. You're an inspiration to us 6 stringers as well!
Thanks for doing these videos Matt. Hugely appreciated. Also not sure if I’ve missed it, but I wonder if you would ever do a video talking about things that make a good baseline in your experience. You have so many memorable bass lines and I’d love to hear more about what you’re thinking about when coming up with a new one.
Great video again, love hearing the details and stories behind the basses. When you do the close up parts, could you hold the phone sideways instead of vertical?
I have the black one!! Dude it’s so good! I bought it in 2013 for $379 and had it setup by Richie of Richie’s guitar shop in the East village, NYC. When Richie set it up and played it, he couldn’t believe it was a Squire and said it sounded like an American Fender with the squire label. I played it at a gig years ago at Bowery Electric (couple of blocks from CBGB’s was) and it sounded awesome. I’ve still got the thumb rest on there but glad to have your blessing to remove it if need be. Today I’m gonna finally try learning the Maxwell Murder bass solo from the tab on Songsterr. Thanks for creating and putting something so personal of yours into the world for us to enjoy Matt! You’re a legend! 🙏❤
Someone took a week off. Glad you're back on schedule as usual! ❤ ps. One day I'll have the chance to put my hands on one of this model but it's hard to find one on sale. One day luck will smile! Cheers!
Man I had one it got stolen out of my old bands Rehearsal spot. These need to come back so we can all get a new one and go hard like you bassmaster general!!!
Fantastic bass !! The best !! Thank you Matt for give it us !! PS I have a question… you change the pickups too ?! I upgraded mine with a Fender P-bass pickups but I think its better with original too !! Byyyy
I'll echo what others have said. Would love to have one of these. Matt your what pushed my to play bass and looks like a fun set up. At this point I have a a 77 Fender J I play regularly, and just got a Rick, would love to have a P to play around with in the mix. Thanks for all these videos, you're a classic act, and pretty decent at the bass.
Arguably the best bass Squier P-Bass ever produced. Still play mine over my vintage Fender and Fender Japan stuff every day, and it’s held up great. Had to replace the electronics a couple of years ago from constant use, and I added Fender 70’s reissue tuners, but otherwise stock.
I got a black one around 2015 or 2016. Out of all of my basses, it’s hands down my favourite of all time. I have many including a stingray a late 80s fender and I’d say the Matt freeman squier is a best bass all around. I will be buried with this bass.
Matt great job as usual. Does doing this stuff for us fans make you get sentimental and miss some of the old times such as making music in the garage or lockout that was in the video for salvation, or look back with a renewed and wiser vision of how easy and also how very difficult those times were. Thank you very much for all you do sir, and just want to thank you and the band for getting me through some difficult times myself while in the military. Look forward to hearing some Op Ivy songs and stories one day.
Got an olympic white one in 2018, it's my favorite P bass!! Sounds amazing and unbelievably comfortable to play. I recently took it into the studio and compared it to a '75 P and a '02 MH signature and it sounded the best! Thank you Matt 🤘
Finally had a chance to play one of the Matt Freeman Squiers at a local used instrument store. It’s definitely one of the best Squiers I’ve played on, constructed well and it sounded fantastic! The only thing I really didn’t care for was that 70’s super heavy lacquer on the neck…. I don’t know if most of those typically get sanded down but my fingers definitely had a tendency to stick when moving up and down the neck. Regardless I would’ve picked it up but they were asking $599 which seems a little steep (I know they sometimes sell for $700-$1000 on Reverb but too much for me).
The VM Amber P bass was pretty great too. I just picked one up NOS and at 8.5lbs it just kills. Simply overshadowed by the Fiesta Red, Butterscotch 50s P, which I own a 2012 of the latter. Playing my 2011 Amber P now, I must say I do prefer the standard bridge on these, it really is noticeable that lends a certain "spank" to the sound.
I've never one in person and we have a Guitar Center and a Sam Ash, I've only seen one Chris Aiken Squire and that was a few months ago at a pawn shop.
Better check when I get home but I’m sure mine is a 2010! I’ve got the black one. It’s awesome. Someone’s changed the pickups before I got it. I want the OG pickups. Love this bass!
My Matt Freeman signature bass is one of my all time favorite instruments I've owned. I recorded my bands album with it. It sounds and plays so good. I value it up there with stuff i paid 3x as much for. I wish i had gotten the black one too while they were still in production. People price gouge them on Reverb. Anyways, I love that bass and I love this channel and videos. More play along videos and also showing off any and all gear that you own. Would love to know about everything down to what picks and strings you prefer. Cheers!
Hey Matt, long time fan here. You've been my favorite bassist since I first heard you in the early 90's. You've inspired me more than anyone else even. Just wondering why you switched from Ampeg to Fender? Also what gauge strings do you use? I Love the Bass Bunker sessions, thank you for continuing to do them. Thanks Man you are a badass.
I wasn't able to track one down when I was shopping for a P-bass, but I found the neck at a decent price (the headstock had a chip in the lacquer finish). So I got a Squier PJ (before they started selling maple neck versions) and upgraded it with that, a HipShot KickAss bridge, & Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound pickups. It might not be a legit Matt Freeman signature bass, but it's my own Frankenstein tribute, and I love to play it.
I have the off white version here! my first P-bass i 'll never sell my precious! but i've changed the pickup for SD SPB3 and the bridge for a black Gotoh 201B-4
I got the white one when it came out . I love it. It plays wayyy above what i paid . They are hard to find now which i love haha. I'll never sell mine .
Loved this and missed not having a video last week. Is there any chance we can have a little tour of the Rancid practice space sometime? I think that would make a great video.
Hey Matt, I was in a Band Called Squat Thrust that opened for y'all in Op Ivy in Austin back in 1988, we played in a plastic bubble, if that rings a bell, (before our old drummer steven stole our bubble when he joined the flaming lips. ) anyway, . fun show! cool bass. rock on.
Great video as always. I am sure I've seen a Maxwell Murder live performance where you play a white bass with "Matt Freeman" inlay up the neck. Would love to hear more about this base since we're talking signature basses here.
Killer bass , then again you probably would sound good playing a 2x4 with bass strings lol. I got mine when it first was released and its pretty f'ing solid for a Squier overall. Was a total steal at the OG price point for how it sounds and plays .
I never managed to get one of those, and people ask alot of money for them now,i did get an inca silver squier jazz bass classic vibe its a very nice bass.
Had no idea about the replacement neck, thanks for sharing. Two things, could you go over what scales you find the most useful, and what you play to get warmed up? Second, could we get a Blood Clot play through? This channel is great by the way, I love the inside info.
I assume at Fender they know something we don't know about the quality of the Squier necks, and when you informed them about the neck having a issue they decided to give you a real Fender neck with a Squier decal on.
Awesome video! I'm gonna look on ebay for one! Rancid fan since 1993 and didn't know you had a signature Fender bass. That finger rest is actually a " tug bar" for people who play bass strictly with down stroke thumb action. I ordered a Harley Benton P- bass about 2 years ago and it came with the same tug bar set up, I automatically assumed Harley Benton didn't know what they were doing untill I looked it up on you tube. Why a Matt Freeman signature bass comes with a tug bar is kinda odd- being you don't play that style. I also have my first Squire P- bass since 1992, it laid abandoned in the garage for 20 years. Then I realized the sentimental value in it. I dressed it up with EMG pick ups Mexican Fender hardware- tunners, knobs, hi mass bridge and a tortis shell pick guard, Fender neck plate and strap locks.. I value that bass as much as my American PJ bass and my American Music Man stingray... great video made me appreciate my squire P bass even more- keepem coming!!!
They go for the price of an American fender now. I had one, it was great. Had some financial trouble and had to sell it unfortunately. Maybe one day I'll get my hands on another.
please bring it back - i missed it
Agree! I want a version with a printed recreation of all the stickers and scribbles that the OG one has. That'd be so awesome as a collectible.
Agreed. I remember playing it at an old guitar shop. Made me buy a p bass as a backup to my jazz. Wish I would have just bought this one. Didn't expect it to disappear so fast.
Fender won't bring it back. This model was made by Grand Reward in China and they made it so good that it put many Mexican and US models TO SHAME.
I really wish they bring it back as well. This bass is almost impossible to find now in my country... And she looks and sounds so damn good!
@@bapt_andthebassesthese Chinese-made tier of Squiers were very much comparable to MIM and MIJ Fenders, in my opinion. I don’t see much of these Freeman signatures on the used market, I guess people are just reluctant to sell them.
Probably the best product that Squier has ever released. Such a great instrument! Thanks Matt Freeman!
Yeah, I'm part of a couple of bass communinties and this bass is sought after by Rancid and non Rancid fans alike, widely recognised as a fantastic bass that punches well above it's price.
I love these videos. It’s basically my hero talking to me about all the questions I wanted to ask him about his songs/gear in the 90s
I gotta say, I love watching your videos. I'm not even a bass player (Guitar since 14) but I've always been blown away by your skill since I first heard Rancid (fan since '93)! I’ve had mine since 2011, same color, and I absolutely love it. Has nice low action and a unique tone. It beats my other, much more expensive basses
Very cool bass especially for the entry level I wish they would reissue it
Thanks for doing these videos Matt. Hugely appreciated. Also not sure if I’ve missed it, but I wonder if you would ever do a video talking about things that make a good baseline in your experience. Great video again, love hearing the details and stories behind the basses. When you do the close up parts, could you hold the phone sideways instead of vertical?
This has been my main guitar since 2018, it's just a solid precision bass.
Fender has to reissue this bass. I regret selling mine during lockdown 😅
I would be interested in the main Basses and Amps you used on each Op Ivy & Rancid albums. Great Channel Matt, keep up the good work.
Simple instrument for a great player ! Thanks Matt to share it with us
Hi Matt! Would love to see your Rancid rig rundown, including the amp settings!
I have one of the white ones and love it

Love seeing The Interrupters sticker on there!
Someone took a week off. Glad you're back on schedule as usual! ❤ ps. One day I'll have the chance to put my hands on one of this model but it's hard to find one on sale. One day luck will smile! Cheers!
I've had this bass since 2015 and love it. Use it all the time for gigs. Thx Matt!
Man I had one it got stolen out of my old bands Rehearsal spot. These need to come back so we can all get a new one and go hard like you bassmaster general!!!
Thank you Matt
Oh yeah, one new version PLEASE !!!!!!!
Fantastic bass !! The best !! Thank you Matt for give it us !! PS I have a question… you change the pickups too ?! I upgraded mine with a Fender P-bass pickups but I think its better with original too !! Byyyy
i own the black one and it truly is the best bass i own!!!
thanks for doing these. great stuff.
Would you ever do a video of your top 5 rancid songs and top 5 op ivy songs ?
I like the choice of putting a Squier decal on the Fender CS made neck.
Lessons and techniques. That’s what I want!
I own one of each color. Great bass!
I'll echo what others have said. Would love to have one of these. Matt your what pushed my to play bass and looks like a fun set up. At this point I have a a 77 Fender J I play regularly, and just got a Rick, would love to have a P to play around with in the mix.

Wish they still made them. I would love to grab one some day.

Matt, please make a video about the amp you use for Rancid and PLEASE talk about the settings and why you have them set the way they are.
Got an olympic white one in 2018, it's my favorite P bass!! Sounds amazing and unbelievably comfortable to play. I recently took it into the studio and compared it to a '75 P and a '02 MH signature and it sounded the best! Thank you Matt 🤘
Black on black with a maple neck always looks good! Love the white too, reminds me of Paul Siminon or Dee Dee.
Wicked pair of basses. The black body/pickguard combo is so lush. Great video Matt.
Finally had a chance to play one of the Matt Freeman Squiers at a local used instrument store. It’s definitely one of the best Squiers I’ve played on, constructed well and it sounded fantastic! I admire you and salute you, sr. From Argentina.
Love the A's sticker and the Spitfire sticker!!
Man. I regret selling this bass so bad. So well built and an insane tone.
Can you do a video where you cover how to get your bass tone? It’s unique and distinct
The VM Amber P bass was pretty great too.
I just picked one up NOS and at 8.5lbs it just kills.

I found used one, don't play it much but don't want to sell it because it's so beautiful... And it's Matt freeman signature !!!
Such a great sound, right now I play a squire jazz and a hofner violin and they are not matching up
Love to see the stock Black Squier vs your 70's on a song! P
Had a couple of squires in the past and both had issues with the neck.. barked em off for an American pro 2 jazz and never looked back!!
I have the black one. Love it!
Always wanted to try and find one of these!
I've never one in person and we have a Guitar Center and a Sam Ash, I've only seen one Chris Aiken Squire and that was a few months ago at a pawn shop.

Show us the stand up bass! Thanks Matt.

Love these videos
Thanks for another great video, Matt! Crazy to think that a Squier P can sound so punchy bone-stock. Really is a special run.
I have a black one. Love it!
The master and his tools!
The Death March sticker👏👏
I have one and it’s pound for pound the best money I’ve ever spent on a new instrument.
I have the off white version here! my first P-bass i 'll never sell my precious! but i've changed the pickup for SD SPB3 and the bridge for a black Gotoh 201B-4
Cool bass ❤️❤️❤️❤️
very cool basses. I've had the same thing happen to the neck on 2 different basses. Both maple necks, I also live in a very dry climate.
Very nice Squier bass 🎸
It's a classical sound🎶
Black body one is also cool !
Thank you for another great video today.
I got the white one when it came out . I love it. It plays wayyy above what i paid . They are hard to find now which i love haha. I'll never sell mine .
I wish they would bring these back. They’re hard to find and definitely fetching more than retail on reverb right now.
Really hoping i can afford one of these beauties someday
awsome Matt, great video. How about a sound demo? How to get the Matt Freeman sound.
I'm glad it's a Squier, hate how expensive Fenders are for what to me feels and sounds no different.
Do a video on what you got hanging above you! The history…all the deets!
Again I love these posts. Would love the odd tutorial of a few songs 😬
Loved this and missed not having a video last week. Is there any chance we can have a little tour of the Rancid practice space sometime? I think that would make a great video.

Matt I would love to know more about where and why you use a J bass or p bass.
Matt I love these! Your black bass look a lot like the ones JJ Burnel from The Stranglers! Was that an influence on that version?
I regret not buying one of these when they came out so much
I never managed to get one of those, and people ask alot of money for them now,i did get an inca silver squier jazz bass classic vibe its a very nice bass.
SICK
Had no idea about the replacement neck, thanks for sharing.

I have the black one!
Love that black on black. Very cool. Would love to hear about the blue/white double neck in the middle behind you! :)
Great Video.
What amp and cabinet did you use on rancid 1993?
I assume at Fender they know something we don't know about the quality of the Squier necks, and when you informed them about the neck having a issue they decided to give you a real Fender neck with a Squier decal on.
Matt, I was having bunker withdrawals lol those are really nice bass’s. Hard to come by nowadays.
Still hoping we’ll get this again one day
I wanted this bass so bad. Can’t find it anymore!
So cooool😎
I'd love to see you play Jaded!
Awesome video! I'm gonna look on ebay for one! Rancid fan since 1993 and didn't know you had a signature Fender bass. Could we see your Amp settings for your tone? And what you’re using in these videos?
I'm curious about the guitars on the wall behind you
I'm curious to know jow high your action is. People seem to think mine is high, but it doesn't bother me.
They go for the price of an American fender now. I had one, it was great. Had some financial trouble and had to sell it unfortunately. Maybe one day I'll get my hands on another.
I just got a new bass. If this was still in production I probably would have bought one instead of the fender Jaguar I got.
