Bonus tip, check the brake pedal to see if the rubber has worn off, indicating whether the car has been through more stop and go driving, or highway driving.

Great tips. Funny video. Bottom line, don't take the word of anything the seller tells you about the history of the car. And check all the body panels for matching Vin stickers on them. I had a seller tell me the the car was never in an accident and the car fax showed no accidents but upon closer inspection when I brought it home, I noticed the vin sticker on the door was painted over. Turns out it was in an accident just never reported. Had I known before it could have helped me negotiate a better price for the car.
And pay attention if the engine light 🕯️ comes on when starting if not don't buy it a lot of times the bulb 💡 has been removed, or look really close and see inside instrument cluster for black tape to cover it. Or like mentioned a code reader is a must have.
I learn so much from you guys. My 1995 Ford Explorer passes all these tests at 245,000 miles. I'm just replacing thing like door handles and I think the hood lifts are no longer available. But, I'll check you guys out for those. Videos are great and entertaining.
First thing I check when looking at a private seller or any used car is the brake and fuel lines.
While I'm under there I check trans, pinion/axl seals, engine etc.
I'm a carpenter by trade but work on my own vehicles. Over the years I've learned all kind of things to look for when buying a vehicle. I do way more than most people, but this has taught me several other things I never thought of checking. Thank you Sue. You're a great teacher. Love your videos.
Outstanding as are all your videos. Personally, I'd make up a checklist following your recommendations to use while checking out the vehicle so I don't forget anything.

I’ve seen several videos claiming to tell people how to buy a used car, but your video is the only one that bothered to explain about the IM monitors, what they are and how dishonest people will clear codes just to get the check engine light to go out long enough for them to get rid of their junk car… Good stuff👍👍👍👍👍👍

Good point about the newer vehicles not having a tranny dipstick Bad idea 💡 and when engine cover is off look for exposed wires or wire's taped up with electrical tape, check coolant reservoir for Signs of sludge in the bottom or Rust also can be Billy Bob's miracle coolant fixer upper Lol 😆🤣 and if you buy it and not sure look up where cabin air filter is some never get changed and air filter also bring a flashlight 🔦 if it's cloudy and if you can't shine light through it replace it. and what I do is take em out and drive it like you stole it, that way you find out about if Jerry and his rigging Crew has anything held together with coat hangers and wishes lol 🤣🤣 if it does take it back and tell to keep they'll always have it. lmao 😂😆

But how do you actually complete the sale? What to you (or they) have to sign? What are the legalities? None of these videos tell anything about that, just their opinions about what to look for. But what are the mechanics of the sale from a private party?

Really applies to any used car regardless of where you but it. Dealers are just as crooked as private sellers. Also no title no money, if they say it's coming then say call me when it's here. Verify the name on the title matches the seller's driver license
Great tips. Another, read the reviews the seller may have accumulated. Also, understand that 9 out of 10 cars are going to have immediate problems that will need to be addressed or fixed. Its a USED car and the Seller no longer wants it. So be prepared or go BUY NEW and tackle that car payment for the next 5-7 years.

Anyone think it impressive that they were able to line up the jump that well? It can be rough to just line up ramps to lift your car up let alone use them for a jump.

No disrespect to the host. Kelly Blue Book (KBB) conniving with dealers to buy your car cheap. Notice when you KBB online they link to so many dealers yup to droo that price. 2008 big horn 59k miles sold to dealer 8k 2018. Dealer still wanna low blow me. I recommend try carvana auto trader and car max then do compare prices. If they try to pull KBB on you walk away

Thank you so much for this. I got sold a lemon last year after my divorce and unfortunately my state doesn't have a lemon law for used cars. The car broke down and they are now suing me for the rest the loan. I plan on getting a car soon, but I'll be more wise from now on.
Check inside the radiator cap not the reservoir.

I'm watching this cause I wanted the actual information, but I love they wrecked that poor Camalon for our enjoyment. Sadly in my case though, I am genuinely needing a car since my accident. I am under the impression there's a difference between buying and not minding a little at-home TLC, and buying one that is quality enough to where it doesn't need anything.

I'm not an expert so tell me where I am wrong, but it seems like because online car sellers are offering so much money for used cars it's damn near pointless to even look for private seller deals. There was a time where you could offer someone the high end of trade-in value or a little more but less than what a dealer would charge. Now the private seller is with anything decent is going to sell to Carvana for far more than the trade-in value. So the private seller market is being concentrated with lemons Carvana didn't want. This is just my amateur assessment to which any feedback is welcome.

Would you recomend doing a pre purchase inspeccion with a mecanic too? Or would these test that you showed us be enough to asses reliability of the car?

Just seeing the rest of the bottom of my car says that's a no no buyer the whole underside is destroyed by salt you can bounce it till you're blue in the face you can turn the steering wheels to your blue in the face you can do all that stuff and within a short period of time it's junk

Question ❓ how bad is motor oil liking by the seals
Depends on what seals. If its the rear main seal and you see oil coming between engine and transmission that would be very expressive to fix. If there is a valve cover gasket leak it's not a deal breaker, but i would offer less because you will want to fix that.

An expert not telling you that most cars DO have the neck for the transmission dipstick and you can simply use the oil dipstick, cleaned well, to measure, see, smell the transmission oil.
