The LeMonde/Hinault stage finish brings to mind the Richard Carapaz/Michal Kwiatkowski stage finish last year. That was so delightful - still remember it.
Boardman is a gentleman, the coverage on tv is quality. It's like 'wish you were here' with sport added. Compliments for you all who cover the tour. Phil Liggett is a LEGEND. MrStinkyb64
My favourite clip is Roche catching DelGardo. Phil Leggett could never ever be beaten as the worlds greatest commentator of all time. Any sport anywhere you name it... TOTALLY AWESOME!!
Danish rider Johnny Weltz took a solo win on Puy de Dome in the '88 Tour. The last time this climb was used. He was a watercarrier for Stephen Roche. But Roche had an injury. So Weltz was free to go for it. And he did.
Part 5 has 2 pieces. One you can find on RUclips. Lance Armstrong winning after his handle bar got caught held by a spectator bringing him down. The final was Greg Lemond winning on the last day when it ended with a time trial.
Hard to watch Armstrong making this list given what so many of those close to the sport knew about his cheating. Understandable given how good a story it was, but in the long run the damage he caused to the sport is probably unrepairable. If a new young prodigy comes along and smokes the competition we will always think it's too good to be true and suspect the worse. Armstrong tainted the whole cycling world, but in particular the Tour with an cynicism that will be hard to shift...such a shame given how gruelling a sport it is and the dedication and hard work young riders put in and the love they have for it
I know, but even then so many people within cycling knew exactly what he was up to. Two Irish journalists, David Walsh and Paul Kimmage were saying it for years and often at great personal and professional cost. They loved the sport and couldn't believe how so many people thought it was ok to stay quiet, let the sponsors and the money flow in regardless of the long term damage it was going to do to the sport
I think the fact they didn't award anyone else the tour on any of the years Armstrong won speaks volumes though. Everyone was doing it. I do share your pain though because growing up, Lance was the reason I got excited when my dad made me watch Le Tour. He cheated and that robbed me of my hero but I wouldn't be the fan of cycling I am today if it wasn't for him.
sorry man but drugs or not is bullshit, his first tour results DNF, DNF, 36, DNF. He never looked like a dominant guy until he won his first tour. after working with Dr. Ferrari for a year.
sirfeckalot No different to Mercx winning yellow, green and polka dot in his tour debut. All the champions up to and including Armstrong were doped up to the tits. Roche collapsed because whatever he’d taken (possibly amphetamines) to close that gap nearly did him in, a la Tommy Simpson.
Maybe everyone was doped to the tits but none of the others were arrogant, bullying cunts like Armstrong. Because of this everyone was looking to catch him out...... yuk, yuk, yuk.
In 1987 no one was on EPO. Roche won Paris Nice as a rookie. He was class from day one. The 87 Tour was wide open and the best man won. At La Plagne Roche benefited from an incredible effort and no team radios and he was not overweight! In 1990 Bugno became unbelievable and Chiapucci went from being a lousy domestique to a world beater. Berlin and the Italians were suddenly all good. Indurain, who knows? He had huge lungs and a resting pulse of 28. If Roche was on it, it was in the early 90’s after chatting with CC about his sudden success.
I never understood why they made this ride in the field by armstrong such a big deal. I've riden a bike in the field. If you don't get a puncture, it's very doable
The alternative was the Yellow Jersey going down at over ~80kph. Have you ridden in a field in the middle of a TDF while in yellow after a rival crashes in front of you on a fast descent with melting tarmac to stay in contention with your front group? You need to put the situation into context.
The super crook in the sport of cycling (and the crook of all crooks in all sports combined, frankly), took a short cut here (without any consideration for poor Beloki of course) and did not do the complete distance of the race. He should have been disqualified. But nobody mentioned this. Whenever I see Armstrong, I have to throw up. As an honest person and as a cycling amateur.
Armstrong is a true loser. A thug bully who intimidated people’s livelihoods, their families and did great damage to cycling. He cheated and lied his way to wins races and then used his influence to rig the governing bodies against innocent people. He shamelessly exploited the sympathy felt toward him as a cancer survivor and used this as a defence against his critics. He set up charities that OTHER people donated money to and took the credit for all this himself. He was probably a decent cyclist along the way but he never gave himself chance to find out as he was drugged up as he couldn’t accept losing. Open your eyes and see him for what he is. A thug. The only up side is that he’s now moving to an age where indignation and bitterness really show a person up for who they are. He has 5 kids, all his swag from cycling and he looks a mess...

Great to see his beloved grandson riding in the Tour now.

LeMond/Hinault sportsmanship finish is greatest highlight ever, imo.
from lemond, yes. hinault was a piece of shit
"Do you want me to punch you in the face?"
"No."
"Get out of here."
1:20 almost makes one wonder if clinchers might have been a better choice instead of tubulars.
still takes some skill and cheek to pull that off, even if he was doping it's still impressive

"It would never happen now, but the two best riders in the Tour were in the same team". I bet Gary regrets saying that after the 2012 Tour.

That looks like Roche, it’s Doped Up Roche!
it should have been kraftwerk all the time! Tour de france! :)
It would never happen now, Bernard Hinault and Greg Lemond = Chris Froome and Bradley Wiggons

Anyone know the name of the song that starts at 4:25?
It was RAYMOND Poulidor, not Alain.
