This is making me feel much better about my own art supply hoarding issues. This is a problem for a lot of artists. I’m not alone. I’ve decided not to buy anything new this year and try to focus on using what I already own. Having too many choices is quite debilitating and overwhelming.

Haha then my work here is done! Actually what you are saying makes so much sense and I am hearing it again and again- less is actually more and too much stuff around can actually stop creativity! It feels very counter intuitive to me but I fear that it is true just the same! Deb xx

The sketch book you flipped through at 20:22 is gorgeous work through and through as is the next. Wow! Also...I'm sorry I'm not your bestie that you would pass unused supplies too but I do think donating to a seniors facility or a non profit group of some sort is a great idea. I recently watched a friend be forced to leave her art supplies behind as there was no room in the senior facility she had to move too.

Yesssss! I can relate! And actually, all these videos popping up on RUclips about “art supplies that I regret” have been very helpful. For the most part, the regret isn’t that the art supply is horrible, although there are a few; it’s mainly because the supply doesn’t work for the way the artists enjoy working, and that’s very different from just bashing a brand or product. So, I am so delighted you made this video and will have a second one. It’s given me “permission” to enjoy using the products that I love and am satisfied with, and because of that, I feel I will potentially grow more and become more confident in my art. I love experimenting with new supplies, but sometimes, accumulating more supplies and hopping from supply to supply can impede the joy of creating. I have enough different supplies to keep me experimenting for a long while, and now my goal this year is not to buy anything new for me until I've given them all a real chance and used them thoroughly. Also, you literally just saved me from purchasing all the Conte A Paris!! I didn't realize they were quite so messy! AND FSS is REAL!

I have several watercolor palettes. I've decided not to buy anymore if possible. And rn, I'm focusing on using my Roman Szmal palette for my current sketchbook. I know different paints act differently and I feel like I'll never understand those differences if I jump from one palette to another.

Donating to a nursing home, in my humble opinion, is the way to go.
Kids at school, for the most part, have their parents and are generally happy. Sadly, many people in nursing homes are not only sad and scared but also lonely. It is a common occurrence for families to leave them there, and some don’t even have family. Who, if not this community, is more in need of a mental escape?
Art is the answer! I advocate for donating to nursing homes as much as possible.

I’ve seen several ‘art supplies I didn’t like’ type of videos but your’s really hit home. When you said you should feel joy when you open them was really true! I know we apply the spark of joy theory when downsizing but never thought of it in terms of my art goodies. I don’t have as many supplies as you, because I’m not a professional….nor, anywhere as talented!! But, I have way more than a person of my skill level should! What I have learned is this: don’t buy any “King Art” products, don’t buy anything at cheap department stores, don’t expect anything from Temu art supplies. You might get lucky but don’t expect it. I have a few products in your list that I love…like Woodies, and the Graphtint pallet from Derwent, and I love my Japanese Gambai Tambi watercolors. But I don’t buy junky stuff anymore. Like the 5 below Gouache. Gimme a break. That isn’t gouache. Hah. And I think sometimes those of us who are still learning need to buy the best quality. To help us ‘get there’, and yet we are the ones who don’t want to invest! I say, if you’re going to play with art supplies, you’re an artist. And you deserve quality supplies! As for all my bad purchases? I have a bin of those labeled ‘Grandchildren’! That is what we play with when the come over!!! (You sketchbooks are just amazing!) Thanks for the fun and inspiring video! :)

It’s crazy how identical your supplies are to mine, especially the watercolor sets. I almost bought the Stablios as well. I frequently take any supplies I’m no longer excited to use and donate them to our local kids art program. Also, I use those Schmincke watercolors on hot pressed paper and they work great. I even add gouache over them as well. Thanks for sharing. 😍

I kind of have a feeling, that the prospect of upcoming moving the house brought this one on.
I can relate to what you are saying, but I have a mild concern. I believe, that words have power, and when one says, for example," I regret buying this", doesn't it put a load of negative energy on a thing? Since it has negative energy now, you steer away from it and not touching it, because the brain thinks now that it's bad.
We all have our favourite things and not so favourite things, but would you know they are not your favourite,if you didn't buy them? If you are on a journey of finding out, which things suit you best, you have to buy them and to try them, right ?
Where does the regret part come from?
Is it the money spent on a bloody thing, that turned out not to be what was expected? Or is it disillusionment, finding out that the dream we were being sold, didn't come true?
In my case, for example, it's the second option almost all the time .
How about we forgive ourselves for spending some money on a RESEARCH, ( and not art supplies) - of which of things work for us and which don't and thus remove the price tag off the art supplies?
It's great, that there's a whole plethora of art supplies in the drawers. What we basically lack , is time or opportunity to put all of them to good use.
Share them, donate them, waste them, whatever you want to do with them, even bin them,if you must, but don't regret anything. Put a note down instead, that That (whatever "that " thing was), didn't work, and move on.
Regret is like a full suitcase with no handle, it's troublesome to carry and difficult to leave behind, but it weighs you down, takes your joy away, slows you down, and, frankly, noone needs it. It's counterproductive. Useless.
Isn't it better, to learn whatever you have to learn from the above mentioned "Research" and comply with results afterwards so we don't step on the same rake again and again?
Do not be harsh to yourself. Forgive mistakes and learn from them, but don't beat yourself up for the things that already past.
By the way, isn't there a UV protection fixative or something, that prolongs the life of not light-fast things?
And I also think of cherry blossom - it doesn't last long, but does it make it less precious? Rather than not painting a picture with non light fast materials, maybe it's worth to paint it anyway and enjoy it while it last, take a picture of it , if that's what needs to be done.
So, no regrets! You gained knowledge, if nothing else, and it's not a small thing.
P.S.: I solemnly promise, that I am not drunk, although you could be forgiven for thinking so after reading my comment 😂
It's just that I had a difficulty to express what I mean. In my head it was all beautifully arranged and spotless, somehow it got messed up in putting it on in writing. Promise. 😅

I have been working with a Dehoarding team - I donated a lot of my art supplies to a local secondary school for kids who need them. Like yourself I buy sets then try them and find I don’t like / don’t use them. I still have a 60litre box of coloured pencils of various types that each have their own unique pros but I do know I have too many and I did get rid of double what I’ve kept. I elected to donate because I need to face the money I waste on things I love but don’t need.

I have an art supply addiction, but not the funds to go crazy. The things I didn't "need," like tempera sticks and acrylic markers, I do try to use from time to time in my sketchbook. I love watercolors and think your collection is fabulous. I wonder if there's a color you particularly like if you could mix it with white acrylic gouache and use it on your gelli plate. It may fall into the category of using it for the sake of using it, or you could consider it a science experiment. Donating to schools and nursing homes is a lovely idea. Good luck. The idea of moving house fills me with anxiety. We've been in the same house for 25 years and it is scary. I'm trying to get rid of stuff so that when I die, my kids won't have a nightmare. 😮

Maybe put your watercolors into full pans instead of half pans. Being able to easily access them, plus more room for your brush, might help. Also, consider mixing white gouache in to make them more opaque. If you like granulation, perhaps make collage pieces that show it off, to place on top of more opaque backgrounds? If you are unsure, make a good palette or two, then save space by giving away the tubes. If you use a pan up, you will know it's worth it to repurchase the color.

I wouldn't feel bad about having lots of things you don't like now. I see it as growth. When I was starting out in watercolor I kept seeing/hearing that I should start with a limited palette, learn mixing and then look at other paints later on. I did art in high school though and already knew how to mix colors so I don't think I got as much out of that as I might have. Which led to my next issue of choosing colors from there. Trying to pick colors from printed leaflets or online color charts is terrible. (Winsor and Newton gouache charts are my enemy 😂)Nothing is what you expect and you do end up with a lot of mistakes along the way. A better start for me I think, would have been buying a 24 pan palette and going from there. As an example Daniel Smith has 266 watercolors and there is a huge amount of overlap across the colors because they allow for some having granulation and others not and varying levels of transparency through opacity. Thankfully I managed to buy the dot cards and that helped a lot but not every paint brand has dot cards. Colored pencil charts are just as bad.
Anyway I see it as growth. Sometimes it's down to rooky mistakes or badly printed color charts that can trick you even later on when you're more advanced. After that of course comes the trying different mediums to see what is your thing. That also causes waste as you try things and discover they aren't for you. Eventually you get to the stage where you've tried everything you want to try and found the things that you love but even then as time goes on you realize that you don't use every color of those supplies you love and you start to minimalize your loved supplies too. Of course tastes will change and new ideas come along and you sort of start again with new things.
Of course there's also fantasy me that imagines I can do magical things with supplies I really don't have any interest in but she's a whole other problem 😂

      @zenlife1200 21 час назад

Actually there is one thing I'm struggling to decide what to do with. It's not art supplies, it's my camera gear. When my kids were little I seemed to get out more and I always loved photography. I bought my first camera with my first pay and went from there. My current gear I bought new in 2014 when hubby was made redundant. I added a few lenses over the years but in the last couple of years I realized I wasn't really using some of the lenses so I sold them and some other stuff and now I'm down to the body and 3 lenses. I don't like taking photos with my phone so last year I thought I'd look for a small camera with a fixed lens. Boy are they expensive now! And there's not many choices these days either. I ended up buying a second hand Canon G1X which takes good enough pictures for what it's used for, mainly family photos or reference photos to paint from. My problem is that I just can't part with my other camera and lenses. Every time I go to list it for sale I put it off. These days my kids are 26 and 20 and I'm full time carer for the youngest. I don't drive and we just don't get out the same as we used to and I think I'm holding onto my gear in the hopes that things might change and we do go lots of places again. I also know that we're getting older and I might not be able to afford to buy another system camera again. (which is a stupid worry, because if I cut back on buying art supplies I could buy another camera 🙄 drama queen here) Maybe I'm grieving for the old life? I know I'm kidding myself but the gear is still here and it's probably not doing it any favors being stashed away unused. I guess we all have our sticking points, you and your watercolor paints and me and that camera body and lenses. I'm interested to see what you end up doing with them and what triggers a mindset change, if there is one.

This December I started going through all of my art supplies just to touch them and see if I had used them. Once supply, I really do not enjoy our soft pastels I want to and I have bought a few after seeing others use them, I don’t use them much. I was embarrassed by the number of markers I was influenced to buy, that I don’t really use. And once I got all my colored pencils together I made a vow not to buy any more colored pencils. My preferred way of working is watercolor when I go out sketching I tend to take a bunch of things and usually use just my watercolors and a few pencils so this year I am dedicated to not buying any art supplies and trying to use the things that I have.

I felt the same way about layering over watercolor. But i made and am still making it a mission to figure out how to use them with other materials that allow them to shine. Line using in as a tranparent foggy background and having a real matte chunky gouache layer in the front
Or using the watercolor just for very transparent things like clouds, water glass etc

derwent graphitint are best used in graphit drawings with a hint of colour from the graphitint, a muted drawing. if you gonna combine them with watercolour and gouache the contrast is too much. graphitint is all about what mood you want to put down in the drawing.

There have been art regret videos I didn't agree with, but I don't think regret buying videos are negative per se. They can help others decide if an art supply is really right for them or not! After all, the reason a supply didn't work for you could be EXACTLY what someone else is looking for in a supply! Especially if someone is on a tight budget. I think it only becomes negative if a creator doesn't explain the reasons they don't like an art supply, since the listener wouldn't learn anything useful.

Do u have something like ebay or vinted? Here in UK I use these sites all the time to resell my used art things, books, clothes etc. I did I clear out the start of the year of my art things and sold of alot of my children's art stuff. I liked the idea of playing, and they are fun but I'm not learning from these cheaper products even in my sketchbooks. So their off to be used by someone else. I think you may use the graphitint once you explore them further. Think they'll suit your style for underpaintings and marks on top. I also own the 2 sets plus xl blocks and trying to work our a way to work them in to my art. Defo nature and landscape suited. Have you thought off using watercolour for skys you could enhance with coloured pencil or pastel without loosing the effect. I'm relearning watercolours this year and although a difficult skill to master but worthwhile I think for my style. Nothing to loose in keeping a handful of natural tones to see if you'll use them. Also no harm or foul in realising certain art products are not for you now. Thanks for the info on ecoliners I only have 5 but was thinking of adding more as I like using them. I have w&n aquarelle markers I enjoy but was wondering about adding a couple of fc Pitt aquarelle as I like some of there muted tones. Do u know if they are as lightfast as stated?
