- I thought that it was high time that we included another installment in this favourite series! This time I have chosen five favourite colours in my acrylic gouache collection. I use this fabulous paint for all sorts of things and it fits perfectly into my mixed media practice.
There are a couple of other things in this video too of course since I am a mixed media artist but the acrylic gouache is a central player.
I am also in the middle of my 'pink cottage crush' so the hon. mention was possibly not such a huge surprise after all!

Madame, I can honestly say, in all my years I've almost never seen mixed media that I've considered good or even art; until today. That's when I discovered your channel. Your work is wonderful. I'm not judging based on this work alone. I saw an earlier video where you flipped through one of your sketchbooks quickly. I have to say, very nice indeed. I don't praise often. I don't believe praise benefits anyone or encourages excellence. However, when I see it, I say it. Bravo.
Oh my goodness, thank you! That is incredibly kind of you to say and I am so pleased that you are enjoying the content. Deb xx
New subscriber here! Loved it. Thank you for sharing. 🥰
Love how the painting comes together and great color selection
Thanks so much 😊
as usual, it was fun watching how you created this piece.. I love the japanesque range.. so many subtle colors , and I love the texture .. I'm still learning how to take advantage of the acrylic properties of it :-)) thx , Debbie .. Norakag 👍👍
Thank you Nora! Yep, I think that the Japanesque range will be the most often replaced ones out of all of them. I have a few which are not as lightfast as I would like (including my beloved Dandelion) and that means that I shall have to pay better attention next time! I get carried away when I am shopping🤣🤣. See you next week! Deb xx
Wow such a lovely video ❤I hope to join your patron soon we are supporting an extra family in need at the moment ❤🙏😍🇨🇦
lol, I grew up reading Enid Blyton’s books.
I was hoping someone would get that reference so thank you! D xx
Thank you for this video. I want to use gouache, that I have and this has helped me understand it's use better. Lovely painting Thank you 😊
You are most welcome! I am so pleased that it was helpful D xx
I'm not huge on pinky pinks, but I love a good salmony pink or a dirty brown pink.
I'm glad I got to see a japanesque color bc I haven't heard many good things about them, but indo think I'd love the texture
Same! Lolly and sweet pinks, Barbie pink and that sort of thing is not for me- anything muted though..🤣🤣 That is a surprise actually, the Japanesque colours are lovely to use and give great textures. Brilliant if you are Gelli printing too. Interesting! Deb xx
Ho ho! One art supply that I have never tried or owned before! I probably should go and hide my wallet before watching, but I cannot be bothered, to be honest.😂
I've read somewhere, that some acrylic gouache has a rather unpleasant scent, if my memory serves me right, the culprit was Holbein acrylic gouache... Have you noticed anything of the sort with your gouache?
We've been hit by a storm here, spent 2 days with no power and heating, and now, when power is back on, I am positively revelling in all kind of everyday luxuries, watching your video and having my coffee, and house is warm ! Bliss.😊 Nothing teaches me to appreciate everyday comforts more, than being without them for a couple of days 😂
I wonder... Is there a pink room with a pink carpet , pink walls and green ceiling in your Suffolk pink cottage on the seaside?
P.S. : I hear you on the subject of sizes of sketchbooks, been there ! Several times. Somehow, the stuff seems bigger when I order it and then it shrinks dramatically during the postage. A mystery. The very thing for Famous Five, I hope they are still in business 😂
I am hearing a few things about the smell of acrylic gouache- faintly worrying because I cannot smell anything awful with mine (but thanks to allergies, my sense of smell is not great). I shall pay extra attention to the Holbein. I do know that when these paints go off, they smell awful. I had one brand from the US which was great paint but when it went off, even I could smell it! I hope that you cane through the storm okay (apart from the usual inconveniences that is). We missed all of it I am happy to say. But I take your point! Being without the niceties really makes us appreciate them doesn't it!
Haha, no I don't think that an all pink room would be allowed in such a cute cottage 🤣🤣- there has to be SOME sort of law against it surely!
Bloody postal service- now they are shrinking our art supplies!🤣🤣
I only buy and use lightfast products because I’m too scatterbrained to remember which supplies are only suitable for sketchbooks 😂. That way I can use anything anywhere
That would be me too! I simply canot be trusted so there are going to have to be consequences 🤣🤣. Deb xx
To each his own as they say! I tried acrylic gouache, to check out the hype, but the smell was repulsive to me....and using plastic, just didn't sit well with me either. Even though acrylic gouache does have more color choices out of the tube, traditional gouache is a better option for me all around- I do enjoy seeing how you use it though!
Fair point! I agree about the plastic too. I haven't noticed the smell to be honest (allergies help there) but it always bothers me when something smells awful because my brain wants to add that it cannot be great for us if it smells unpleasant. Traditional gouache is lovely and I try to use mine in almost every sketch. It is my comfort zone. Deb xx
Fav five in holiday cottage by the sea 😂 I'm a fan. I'd love a holiday by the sea about now, it's getting too humid and hot for me.
It doesn't look like Turners gouache of any type is available here in NZ but I can find Holbein. When I first wanted to try watercolor I didn't have any paints and money was a bit tight so I cheated and watered down my acrylics. I know now that it's not the same thing 😂and the paint won't do watercolor things on the paper but I enjoyed messing about with them in that way. These days I have watercolors, gouache and acrylics but do I really want to add acrylic gouache as well? I'm not sure. I get a bit lost with too many choices so I really try to limit my different supplies and the number of color choices for each supply. My acrylics are mostly Jo Sonja which are matt anyway, so I don't gain that from acrylic gouache either.
I don't really like pastels of any kind. Too messy for me but I own a few pastel pencils I bought as a compromise as they seem less messy lol. I'll dig them out of hiding and have a go with them on my next sky/ocean. Weirdly I have wedge sponges that must have come with something else, I've no idea what though. My most used non art supplies are old credit cards, toothpicks and cotton buds. There's a lot you can do with them, especially the cotton buds that are both round and flat at one end and come to a point at the other. Maybe you could do a fav five non art supply list sometime
My daughter just suggested that my sponges came with the Gelatos. I think they did now I think about it.
I love your point about needing to think outside the box when we don't have much money- that has happened a few times in my life too and the skills and hacks that i learned are with me today!
Agree about too many choices too. I am in a culling mood at the moment and it is amazing how many things have not seen the light of day for so long! Spoiler alert: next week's video is all about the start of THAT journey. One point though (this is your minor lottery win...) you already have Acrylic Gouache. Jo Sonja paint (one of the best in the world IMHO), is a velvet mat acrylic gouache. I used it exclusively when I lived in Australia. It is much harder to find here in Europe.
Pastels are certainly not for everybody. I am used to the dust now and I have found that by working a lot slower, the dust can be fairly minimal. It is still there and I hate it on my fingers.
I LOVE your suggestion about a fave five non art supplies video! That is going to happen for sure and I think that the makeup sponges will be on the list! Thank you for the suggestion! Deb xx
Acrylic gouache is NOT gouache. It’s acrylic with a matte finish. Saying acrylic gouache is like saying oil watercolor.
Absolutely right, it is not gouache and I am not sure that I said that it was? It is a different medium altogether. Thank you for your observation and I will watch my video back to see if I could have done better.
