  • BODY LOCK GUARD PASS OFF THEIR UNDERHOOK BY GORDON RYAN // This is a clip from Gordon Ryan's new Guard Passing Instructional series "Systematically Attacking the Guard."
    Passing the guard can be a daunting task, here Gordon "King" Ryan shows how to perform a body lock pass off of your opponent's underhook.
    The body lock guard pass is one of the most effective ways to pass guard without the gi.
    Gordon's new instructional will be available exclusively at bjjfanatics.com

    Damn this just solved an issue I've been having. I typically go for the Kimura when they get the underhook but good guys can push me on my head without much base which makes it a coinflip. Qlso Otherwise, sometimes they butterfly your hips and can take the back. I try to go for double underhooks but that far underhook is essential. This solves a major issue of not having that far underhook. The concept of going to the side that you don't have the underhook is simple but illuminating.

    Just for fun- one good counter to this is to lock up the same body lock Gordon shows, but do it as the bottom fighter. You can use it to set up Gordon's favorite butterfly sweep, or with proper head position you can use it to stand up. Usually with a lockdown or butterfly hook you can toss your opponents hips enough to allow a shrimp. From the shrimp you can reguard or stand up. If you can wrestle well you should be able to coyote sweep or stand up. Underhooks are so powerful.

      They can't sweep because you have their upper body pinned down with that body lock. They might be able to try and butterfly sweep, or lockdown sweep, but as long as you keep thier upper body down, they won't have enough leverage. Great escape.

    I'd like to see the partner do it to GR now. Because he is about 3 times as broad as her and frankly that's the position I usually find myself in. It's not so pleasant to have some big guy on top of your arm/hands/wrist. I'm not hating because this is a great pass but is it a great pass on someone way bigger than you?

    Can you still do this without your opponent underhooking you?

    • @charlesbell5500
      @charlesbell5500 5 лет назад +1

      It wouldn't make any sense because if you have the far-side underhook, you're gonna need to pass to the opposite side. Whatever side your underhook is on, you want to pass to the other side. So for example, if you have an underhook on the far side, you'll start knee cutting, tripod passing (so you can step over their hook), or you could transition right to mount but that's more risky.
