I got to try it at the distillery last week and I was very favorably impressed. Drank much easier than 117 proof. $45 for an ounce and you keep the glass so of course In told the wife I bought a $40 souvenir glass and paid $5 for the whiskey.
Thanks for the review! My only problem with RR15 is the panic that ensued after consuming the bottle to the halfway point. Thankfully I found a backup and all is well with the world again 😅
I just tried the 15 at Wild Turkey, and brother it was incredible. Just beautiful. Also, had the pleasure of meeting good ol' Jimmy Russel, very funny gentleman.
Thanks for breaking the budget for us.. Russell's 10 is a favorite staple and I consider it a banger. I always appreciate your master level reviews. What a score!
Matt?!?! You're a Project Pat fan???? I didn't think you get get any higher on my cool list but you never cease to amaze!! Great video and review as always!!
I thought the Old Fitz VVS 13 Year would be whiskey of the year until I had the RR15! Can't wait for other distilleries special releases this winter - seems a great year for bourbon indeed.
I want to become a whiskey label writer. Or a White House spokesman. Or a corporate HR executive. Or tobacco company PR chief. Regardless, same skill set. 😂
Whoa! 😳 That’s a serious score, Matt! I tried the Jack 12, Four Roses 135th Anniversary, Russell’s 15, and the new Master’s Keep rye on the same night. The Four Roses was my favorite. It was brighter with a great finish, so maybe that’s just my jam. The cellar aged has similar characteristics, and I love that too. I went back for seconds at the one place I can find a pour. Like you sir, I’m not a big Maker’s Mark guy. It’s just that good. I have a bunch of Wild Turkey, from 101 on up the lines. Russell’s 10 yr is a staple in my home. The single barrel not so much. Rare breed, yes. All the rye offerings are excellent. I really like the 12 year 101 and I love the Master’s Keep Unforgotten. I own two. Have not had the privilege to sample the 17 yr Master’s Keep yet, but it’s on my list and I know where to find a bottle if I’m willing to sell a mildly import, yet nonessential organ. Russell’s 13 and 15 are great whiskies. I don’t dispute that, but I no longer think they are worth the current prices…or nonsense. Yeah…I said it…and yeah…I had a 15 yr in my cart, before I tried it. This may be a hot take, but I think they are trending in the Macallan direction, meaning the palate simply doesn’t rise to meet the level of the nose or the price tag. 🤷🏻♂️ My rare cask was a rare exception…and probably because it was a gift. 🤭 Still a big Wild Turkey fan…but they’re losing me with this absurdity. The online release was a disaster. So many better ways to do that after you crash your website for like 3 days. Glad I wasn’t alone though. Here’s to us…gluttons for punishment, one and all! Cheers.🥃😂
The website release by Russell's was terrible and what's even more infuriating is that the 15 is going for well above MSRP on secondary now. Great review, glad you were able to score a bottle eventually!
I will be driving from KC to Ocala, Florida in September and will be doing some bourbon hunting along the way. Will I find one of these? A Russell’s 13, an OCD #5 Premium, or maybe a Michter’s 10? Probably not, but I can dream. 🤞
Had the opportunity to have a pour of the RR15 at the Wild Turkey distillery a few weeks ago. Even got to meet and shake Jimmy Russell’s hand. It’s was a pretty cool day….and as for the bourbon? Oh, hell yeah! Great stuff.
That's ridiculous. I've never seen it above $599 (which is still way overpriced). I'm hoping to find it for $350 or less. Apparently that's not impossible...only really really hard.
Yeah we know RR15 is good, but glad to hear you joined some bowling leagues. Our 36 week league starts back up in a couple weeks. Ready to get back into it.
Just finished up a 12 week summer league with my wifey. Fall Men's League and Mixed League start in a few weeks. My first USBC sanctioned leagues. Hoping to bowl some tournaments with my girls this winter after I get an average on the books.
Cracked my bottle w a couple of guys on July 2nd and haven’t touched it since 😂 not because I don’t want to but because I wanted that thing to get some air time. Soon my friend, soon 🥃
I am in the minority on this bottle I think. I tried a pour at a bar here for $40. Was it very good whiskey? Yes. Did it make me want to go out and spend 250-300+ on a bottle for myself no.
@@ADHDWhiskey I can as well sometimes. Your palate and mine align very similarly with our love of oak and older bottles, but this one just didn't have that oak flavor touch that I look for. At least not on the bottle I tried. And most of the RR15 bottles seemed to be offered in like package bundle deals for upwards of 500 or you just got lucky. But the bar pour helped ground my FOMO a little bit. If I had to choose Sam Houston 15 or like the Hardins Creek Jacob's Well I think I would pick those over the RR15.
Russell's 15 has one of the best noses in whiskey. The palate... great but too much oak for me. Bourbon drinker's have been duped into thinking oak = good. Bitter oak and barrel char is not good, it's a flaw. Wood sugar is what you want. You want the char to add brown sugar and caramel, not bitterness. Russell's 15 is far better than Russell's 13 and the nose is KILLER. The whiskey is probably a top 10 to most people but for me I think it'll be a top 15-20 bottle for me based on what I've tried so far and what's left for the year.
I got to taste it with some friends and glad i got that opportunity, i might not be a Russells guy though. I definitely didn't think it was 250$ good. I also got to try MM cellar aged and would rather find one of those in my humble not so important opinion 😅
I went to a spot right down the road after checking my regular which is raffling russel’s 15, a bottle at each location. This spot had 3. Bought one, had to go back for another but policy is to leave one for others, and as for the raffle, if I win let it go to those who want it. 2 bottles is just enough. One to open sooner and enjoy with friends. Another to enjoy down the line or trade with a major whisky of the future.
I was glad I missed our most recent ABC allocated drop so I didn't have to face the decision of paying $250 for this bottle. I was unhappy paying $150 for the last RR13 after getting $99 GTS bottles, but I'm glad WTWT was able to review RR15 for us.
And here I was trying to repress the memory of breaking my "no bottles over $99.99" last week at the Evan Williams Experience for my coveted 12 year bottle. Thank you, you darling man.
Got 4 bottles for $ 1300 few weeks ago ($ 325 each) Saw several bottles selling for $ 300 couple days past Seems like secondary price of this bottle is dropping rapidly Soon enough , Russell's 15 year will drop down to $ 270 ~ 285 IF anyone's planning to buy em now , please do not pay over $290

@ADHDWhiskey , I'm just a guy who doesn't know anyone else who bowls, and the only open league spots they have is this Spots Shot. It changes ever week or two, we don't even know what it is, just that it's not a normal house pattern and that it's some PBA pattern. These lanes sponsor a few spots every year to the New Mexico Open. The league just finished last week and the top few get a sponsored spot into the Open that's being played this week... I came in last, but this is also only my second season at it.
I disagree, GTS 23 is moldy barrel character funk but syrupy bourbon greatness. It doesn't have an astringent, dry oak finish like RR15 does. YMMV, this assessment is from a side by side of 23 WLW, 23 GTS and RR15. To me, the 2 BTACs were substantially richer, more complex and finished without the drying oak astringency that the RR15 expressed.
I really don't care if Matt scores it a 10 or 12. Campari has gotten WAY out of pocket with their pricing. Let those fuckers sit on the shelf in a back room(they're not going to be on the regular shelves)

It's behind a number of Master keeps for me.
I did the RR15, RR13 (B5), CNF, WT12 blind the other day. RR15 easily stuck out over top the others, crazy stuff
