While listening back to this, I realized that here, in my six pen case at the office, I have a Lamy 2000, a sailor pro gear slim, an e95s, and an 823. It scares me that I am mind-twinning with Drew right now.

@@1OneMinutePlease I would absolutely go with the custom 823. Especially in the medium nib. It’s so buttery smooth as it writes. And it’s a more standard size and style. The e95s is a great pen, but it’s very small and the nib is unique.

    1. Jinhao 992 for those inks you dont want to ruin putting in any other pen ..
    2. Fountain Pen Revolution Himalaya with the ultraflex nib for those fancy writings ,
    3. kakimori dip nib for testing inks ,
    4. Twsbi swipe medium for all your basic every day writing,

    1. TWSBI 580: Best fountain pen under $100.
    2. Pilot Vanishing Point: Due to the fact that this is a retractable fountain pen, it's great for taking notes.
    3. Pilot Justus 95: You can adjust the softness of the nib.
    4. Montblanc 149: Actually this could be any grail pen. It doesn't have to be a Montblanc 149.
    5. Ballpoint Pen: Fountain pen users need to have a ball point pen when someone who isn't a fountain pen user ask them for a pen.

Currently…my 5: pilot vanishing point-fine, twsbi Eco stub nib, Benu ice caramel latte-med, Delta Lapis Blue Palladium-med, and a Conklin Endura - fine. Frankly there is an assortment of dip pen nibs. I’m with Drew in that dip pens are a great way to test run an ink or for a quick change up.

I think having something with a JOWO threaded nib is a must if having a small collection. Then you can really experiment and also "upgrade" it along the way with different nibs. I think an opus 88 with a stacked nib for example would be an awesome pen, high capacity and versatile AF nib with lots of options (I think the stacked nibs that are fine or extra fine on one side and bold on the other are amazing).

My picks: The Pilot Metropolitan Calligraphy is a great everyday writer with a small stub nib. TSWB 580 for volume. Lamy Safari or Al-Star. Lamy 2000. Kaweco Sport for a pocket pen. All of which are very affordable pens and easy maintenance. The Lamy 2000 being the most out of pocket.

  • @SendingStache

    1) Pocket Pen/EDC: Kaweco Brass Sport - Fine
    2) "Take to Work" Pen: Lamy 2000 - Fine or Extra Fine
    3) Long Writing Sessions (Journaling/Writing): Pilot 823 Custom or M800 - tough to pick - Fine Nib
    4) Affordable "All-Rounder:" Sailor 1911L - Medium/Fine. It's nice but you don't have to stress about it. Can be used for anything from notes to longer sessions.
    5) Grail or Sentimental Value Pen of choosing to keep the flame of joy burning bright. For me, this is my grandfather's Scheaffer 444XG with a fine nib.

I love this Champagne pockets list. What is the answer if you don’t have champagne pockets but you are not looking for a Home Depot either? In other words you want quality without breaking the bank. Yes, there are fountain pens that will cost the entire budget for these five. So, is there a selection for apprentice/starting out/beginner? Maybe the answer is not 5 pens. Maybe the answer is: if you are into journaling do this try this pen? If you are a pen and ink artist and want two pens to start out try these. If you do watercolor and ink try this. If you learning calligraphy…

Sailor Pro Gear slim, it's my "nice" pen with a gold nib. Honorable mention, Parker Jotter with a gel ink refill, for it's ease of use and all around usability/travelability.

Great list -- well done. I would have included a Pilot Vanishing Point because the quick click action is so handy in certain situations. Also, although the Pilot E95s is one of my absolute favorite pens, I mught not choose it for the pocket pen category. It seems a bit too delicate to just chuck in a bag or pocket, and I'd want a firmer cap closure for that. I always carry my Pilot E95s in a pen sleeve. I'd probably choose a Schon Dsgn Pocket 6, which I realize Goulet doesn't sell. A Kaweco could work too -- perhaps a Supra for extra pen size options.

Great list. New to FP obsession. Loving your videos Brian and Drew. Two questions:

That gives you room to bring in both some sort of flex pen (at the very least a full on Falcon if you want want something E95ish), and then you have the 5th spot for either a super-cleanable pen suited for special inks (TWSBI 580 with a stub, maybe?) or a true grail pen (HS/Empreror/Whatevs)

    This should be correctly titled:

@@hmm5131 Brian often talks about pens he bought in Japan that they don't carry. And Drew talks about pens he's customized. So this isn't really a fair criticism.

It’s a passion of theirs, true, but at the end of the day, it’s business. So if talking about their products help keep these podcasts going, which I enjoy for free on a weekly basis, then I am all for it. 😊

It's a choice they've made. I can live with it - they provide so much good info, don't they? Here's an idea, why not give us your list of 5 they DON'T carry? That would be interesting. Hey I'll just do it, with a wide nib range, for drawing:
      1. Franklin-Christoph Model 20
      2. TiLiner Titanium
      3. Good Blue L130
      4. Walltown Brass Copper
      5. Waterman 52v
Yes I own all these pens and do recommend them. Plus maybe a Kaweco Special , from Goulet Pens.

Really disappointed in my e95s just cause i got a medium nib. Its impossible for ne to write with. At least it was a lesson for ne to only get f or ef nibs.
