I think she gained most of her fans during Idol because of her style and the way that she belted. There's a certain ring in her voice that I find beautiful the way she does her runs. Maybe she would be a technically better singer if she focused on technique and not belting, but I think she wouldn't have made it as far as she did without her belting. Plenty of people appreciate it. I actually liked "I Turn To You" and thought that the problem was her lower register.
Besides Whitney, the only other girl I've heard that has pulled off this song is Leona Lewis. Just discovered this girl and she is definitely on that list. What a voice!
Why is Vonzell always being negatively assessed in all of your comments, but you still go and watch her videos? What makes you watch these videos if her "squeaky" and "screechy" high-pitched voice is so annoying? If it's because you like her voice in any sense, then why do I never see a comment about her that's positive? It's almost like you have something against her personally. Also, when did she sing Love On Top? I, being a person who actually loves her voice, would love to hear it.
in the 80's, Whitney has UNlimited range, she could hit any note she wanted. But as she grew older, Whitney's voice became deeper. When she sang I Have Nothing, Whitney was around 30 years old and her voice had started to get deeper, when Whitney was 22 her voice was naturally a soprano, very high pitched, even higher than Vonzell. Go listen to Whitney's early renditions of 'I am Changing'.
I think whitney is better, this version is only 1.34min and she did the same notes as Whitney's original version, but live, in the bodyguard tour, Whitney did this song with a diferent and more original arrangement at the ending, and of course after singing for hours! (but I liked this performance too ;)
I don't like the pianist. He lacks creativity and soul! but Vonzell killed it! My favorite AI Contestant! Actually, I like to call her WINNER! My favorite AI Winner!
The fuck?? Carrie ALWAYS was considered to be extremely cold and distant throughout her Idol run, which was why a lot of people had trouble warming up to her. Vonzell, in contrast, was always all smiles and seemed upbeat and happy all of the time. And vocally? Vonzell may have been more trained, but Carrie smoked her in terms of power and raw ability.
great performance.. but got to say that she doesn't control totally her voice... and besides nobody can do it like whitney !! anyway she has a powerful and high voice like that
Let's go with the objectives then. Carrie can't do a melisma. Carrie's timbre is yelling when the range goes up. Get back to us when your "foundation" in music teaches you how to play out a perfect melisma, that is if you know what it is to begin with. You are the type who would say Carrie is a better singer than Beyonce. LOL.
ROFL, you just proved the scope of your ignorance with that one, because Carrie doesn't even USE falsetto in "Alone," the ENTIRE number is performed in her chest voice! OOPS.
Well, that's alright, everyone has their own opinion when it comes to people's voices. Even though you find it shrill and thin, a lot of her fans actually liked the way she sounded. Personally, if she cut out all of her belting I would find her performances boring. I know you probably didn't like it, but when she improved United We Stand at the end, she blew me away, and many others felt the same too. To each their own I guess
@ku2busch She is honestly a better singer..vocally... compared to Carrie Underwood. But, I guess people liked Carrie more because maybe mmm...she seemed more friendly. Besides. Carrie isn't that bad either. know what I mean?
Carrie can't do a melisma? Clearly you couldn't be any LESS familiar with her body of work since American Idol if you're going to make such an outlandish untrue claim. Carrie executes pitch-perfect melismas ALL of the time, and does so effortlessly. & no, I wouldn't say that Carrie is a better TECHNICAL singer than Beyonce given that she has no formal training and thus has some serious flaws in her technique, but she certainly has a stronger INSTRUMENT than Beyonce.
You proved your level of ignorance when you stated that Carrie uses "falsetto" in "Alone," lmao. If you want to talk about squeaky falsetto, then head over to Vonzell's cringe-worthy cover of Aguilera's "I Turn To You" and her more recent cover of Beyonce's "Love On Top"...Maybe Vonzell could have some type of a career if she would just come to terms with the type of voice she has and realize that she was NOT meant to be a powerhouse belter like a Whitney or a Mariah.
Just because Vonzell consistently sang (I mean screeched) at the top of her vocal range throughout the entire season by no means indicates that she was the strongest voice. That's such a laughable claim. In terms of vocal power and raw ability, Vonzell NEVER had anything on Carrie, despite her higher level of training. Vonzell was a watered down, out-of-tune, smaller voiced version of Beyonce. & THAT is me being GENEROUS!
Carrie does yell a bit. Touche. She tends to place the sound in her throat too much and winds up having to push harder than she would if she were to place it correctly. Touche. But what's Vonzell's excuse? Vonzell's vocal technique is healthier than Carrie's and thus it is EXPECTED that she should exhibit greater technical skill than Carrie. But why does her voice get so thin and squeaky in her upper register? And why is she constantly out of tune?
Carrie's problems are related to her lackluster technique. Vonzell's problems are related to her failure to realize the limitations of her instrument. That's all. Carrie's problems could easily be fixed if she were to put her ego aside and got proper vocal training. Vonzell just can't seem to want to admit that her voice simply isn't capable of what she endeavors to do with it.
i think she's better than leona. yeah leona's vibrato is very slooo0ow! leona will hav limitd s0ngs, she doesnt fit to any s0ng. vonzell shud practice her emotions, she needs some emotions wen she sings.
The fact is your claim that Vonzell "sreeched" is highly questionable. Even Simon agrees Vonzell has a beautiful voice. Don't blame Vonzell for Carrie Underwood's mediocre abilities. The fact of the matter is country contestants have a higher chance of winning since the viewership is majority from the South. It's sad that popularity trumps talent in this competition and you are simply masking the truth.
Why are you bringing race into this? There are plenty of contemporary R&B singers who are "dark-skinned" and are doing extremely well for themselves. Vonzell just isn't that good, she's very very basic. She's a pretty girl with a pretty voice...like Kelly Rowland.
"greatness" is not a musical technicality but is defined by, wait for it, popularity. I'm not a Vonzell fan, I am calling it as it is, sadly you ARE a Carrie fan which makes you a biased partial adjudicator unqualified to assess musical ability. Carrie is far from having a "full-bodied" sound and Vonzell is not a squeaky singer, talk about squeaks, go listen to Carrie's falsetto singing Alone. Apparently you're not a real fan after all lol
Best singer, MY ASS. She sounded a shrill, squeaky, strained mess in almost every single performance. She simply doesn't have the type of voice for the songs that she tries to pull off. Her voice isn't rich or strong enough to do the whole "powerhouse belter" thing...it sounds forced.
I was referring to VOCAL greatness, but nice try. I'm not a "biased partial adjudicator" I'm as objective as they come. Unlike yourself, I actually DO have a solid foundation in the fields of music theory and vocal pedagogy. Clearly you do not. Therefore, if I had truly believed in my heart of hearts DURING AI5 that Vonzell had superior vocal capability to Carrie, I would have went on to be HER fan (epecially since I don't fancy country music) and not Carrie's. So FAIL on your part.
Carrie's mediocre abilities? LMAO. That's highly ironic coming from someone who stand for Vonzell Solomon. Carrie can hit all of the same notes as Vonzell...difference is, it doesn't sound as high to you when Carrie does it because her voice remains rich with a full-bodied sound, as opposed to the paper-thin squeaky-ness that you hear from Vonzell when she rides the top of her vocal range. Popularity does trump talent, but greatness also trumps mediocrity, which is why Carrie TRUMPS Vonzell. :)
@dadizzie why does she try the whole rap hip hop thing? she sucks at it!! she is a SINGER they should have given her better material...just like Paris Bennett!!
That's just the thing, though...her "belting" was thin and shrill for the most part, especially in the upper register. I dunno, to me she always sounded like someone who tried to sing songs and tackle notes that were too big for her voice.
The only person I've heard sing this song, and get close, you go VONZELL!
she was my favorite I wish she had a cd id buy it her voice her talent ,style and beauty offers a lot
we need more singers like her and jhud. i like both their voices.
WITHOUT DOUBT, THE BEST OF SEASON 4.
Omg, she is soo good:D
Get'em gurl! Damn she can blow AI4 she was the best no doubt
You can't stop !
She has a cd coming out and has snippets of songs that'll be on her cd on her myspace page.
this is my gurl right here..yall!!
I think she gained most of her fans during Idol because of her style and the way that she belted. There's a certain ring in her voice that I find beautiful the way she does her runs. Plenty of people appreciate it. I actually liked "I Turn To You" and thought that the problem was her lower register.
Leona is an artist that was on the British version of American Idol called X Factor. Do a search on her. She was really good
Great performance. Same key as Whitney. Most of the time people don't sing it in it's original key but she did and she sounded amazing.
amazing!
Besides Whitney, the only other girl I've heard that has pulled off this song is Leona Lewis. Just discovered this girl and she is definitely on that list. What a voice!

i like her rendrition the best..
@iamdeidah Really wow where'd you hear that?!

i agree
VONZY ROCKS N ALL YAW HATERS @ THE BOTTOM TRY & SING IT!!!....then we will see whose stained!!!....
for me the most impressive part is at 0:51!
She sing at higher key than Whitney,,,great, Vonzell!!!
I think you better than Carrie Underwood,,,
DAMMMNNNN SHE CAN SANG! seriously, I honestly can say this is the closest to the original whitney version of this song I've ever heard.
I think whitney is better, this version is only 1.34min and she did the same notes as Whitney's original version, but live, in the bodyguard tour, Whitney did this song with a diferent and more original arrangement at the ending, and of course after singing for hours! (but I liked this performance too ;)
Yeah...most artist have a studio key and a live performance key...Most of the time the live performance is lowered.
me to
i love 0:24!
The best she's done of this song was while she was on american idol. It was better there though i love this one too.
I don't like the pianist. He lacks creativity and soul! but Vonzell killed it! My favorite AI Contestant! Actually, I like to call her WINNER! My favorite AI Winner!
Who is Leona?
I'm being serious.
yeah, that's it. i couldn't put my finger on who she reminds me of. Kelly rowland, yeah
Who is this??
This is pretty good, but her version on Idol is phenomenal!
she was pretty freakin hot!! i love me some of that, i make her hit all the right notes
I think Vonzell does a great job...for some reason I think her and Kelly Rowland resemble.
great performance.. but got to say that she doesn't control totally her voice...
and besides nobody can do it like whitney !!
anyway she has a powerful and high voice
like that
Let's go with the objectives then. Carrie can't do a melisma. Carrie's timbre is yelling when the range goes up. ROFL, you just proved the scope of your ignorance with that one, because Carrie doesn't even USE falsetto in "Alone," the ENTIRE number is performed in her chest voice! OOPS.
there were parts of it that were good and parts that were strained too far
Nobody can outsang THE LATE GREAT WHITNEY HOUSTON! I MEAN NOBODY! WHITNEY>vonzell
Even whitney sang it lower live.
She should have won american idol
shes not the best singer on earth but she can blow
It wasn't age. Patti, Gladys, Aretha can still sing high. Whitney has vocal damage.
Well, that's alright, everyone has their own opinion when it comes to people's voices. Even though you find it shrill and thin, a lot of her fans actually liked the way she sounded. No sound!!

she reminds me of Aaliyah...except Aaliyah had better stage presence...no offense...
Carrie's problems are related to her lackluster technique. Vonzell's problems are related to her failure to realize the limitations of her instrument. That's all. Carrie's problems could easily be fixed if she were to put her ego aside and got proper vocal training. mellynumerounoo you're kidding right!
i think she's better than leona. yeah leona's vibrato is very slooo0ow! leona will hav limitd s0ngs, she doesnt fit to any s0ng. vonzell shud practice her emotions, she needs some emotions wen she sings.

However much I LOVE Vonzell, I have to say Jennifer Hudson's was better...
Carrie's mediocre abilities? LMAO. That's highly ironic coming from someone who stand for Vonzell Solomon. @dadizzie why does she try the whole rap hip hop thing? she sucks at it!! she is a SINGER they should have given her better material...just like Paris Bennett!!
nope... definitely dont agree
Omgosh, she was so out of time; you could hear her off beat with the piano.
personally i like ricki-lee's version better than this one
Unfortunately not, but at least the winner (Carrie Underwood) is awesome just not as good as Vonzell.
didn't like it... charice sang it much better
That's just the thing, though...her "belting" was thin and shrill for the most part, especially in the upper register. I dunno, to me she always sounded like someone who tried to sing songs and tackle notes that were too big for her voice.
